SO MUCH MORE
The Y gives my boys security
and a sense of belonging.
Stephanie Doll, Easley
Stephanie and her four kids have just traveled the long road
from an abusive situation to a womens shelter to a home of
their own. While Stephanie works six days a week, her three
older children enjoy scholarships and security in
various Y programs.

The Y is our saving grace!

Trina Pitts, Easley
When Trinas adult daughter became gravely ill, the toughest
challenge was how to provide safe, consistent, affordable
care for her little girl. For the Pitts family, scholarships to
Y summer camp and afterschool programs were an
answer to prayer.

The Y helped me recover

from a stroke.
David Rodrigues, Pickens
The physical therapy Davids doctor prescribed cost more
than he could afford. So he returned to his arthritis water
class at the Y and started using our exercise machines.
David now thanks God for his recovery, and Y staff and
fellow class members for their support.

Im not afraid anymore!

Christopher Day, Easley
Thirteen-year-old Christopher, who couldnt swim and
feared water, now confidently streaks across the pool
thanks to eight swimming lessons with his best friends.
Christophers lessons were made possible by a grant from
YMCA of the USA.

With the Y I am confident I

will have everything I need to
come full circle and one day
pay it forward.
Kristi Ward, Pickens

In 2008, the Ward familys life changed forever when

Kristi was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and a few
years later her 6 year old son was diagnosed with autism.
Through YMCA programs and membership, Kristi and her
family were able to get the support they needed to
continue moving forward.

Im raising my boys to be
good husbands and
fathers with lots of help
from the Y.
Shirley Roberts, Easley
Shirley, a single, working grandmother, is raising
Patton and Vincent with limited family support.

MY Y MEMBERSHIP
Our hope is that the Y is more than just a place to come and workout. We want it to be about the experience
you have and the endless possibilities to be a part of something more than just a gym. Our YMCA has
something to offer for all ages. At the YMCA we strive to change lives by providing the tools for people to lead

Membership
Type

Open to All - Income Based

As a non-profit, we want everyone to be a part of the YMCA,
regardless of race, gender, beliefs, age or income. Because of
that, we have pricing based on your specific situation.
Your membership rate is adjustable based on your total
household income, number of adults and number of children on
the account. The rates listed here are for those whose
household income is $45,000 or more per year.
Please visit our website to see what your specific pricing will
be. The pricing will be good for 24 months from the time the
membership begins.
In order to adjust your rate, you must present a current tax
return to verify household income at the time you join
and again every two years. Accepted documents for income
verification include the 1040, 1040EZ or 1040A.
A staff member will view line 22 of your 1040, line 4 of your
1040EZ or line 15 of your 1040A. For more details, view our
FAQs online.
If you are not required to file taxes, please present a statement
of non-filing, which can be obtained for free by calling
1-800-829-1040 or visiting the IRS website.
In those cases where the most recent tax return does not
reflect the current circumstances, you can submit your story
and situation online so that we can help you in any way we can.
Please visit www.pcymca.net/membership.php

OPERATION
SAVE A LIFE
Since 2009, the Pickens County YMCA has been focusing on reducing the
drowning rate in Pickens County and Northern Anderson County.
Our goal has been to teach as many children as we can to swim,
as well as basic water safety.
In 2012, we taught 609 children to swim at the Easley and Pickens
YMCA; of which 219 children were taught for free. The local schools
refer need based children in the 2nd & 3rd grade to the Y and we teach
them water safety and swimming basics at no cost to them.

My six year old was not a proficient

swimmer but wanted to join a swim
team. We signed up for lessons hoping
to improve. He was nervous, but the
staff was so encouraging and helped
coax him along. I loved that each lesson
began with character instruction and
ended in prayer. The experience was
more than just a swim lesson. By the
end, he was ready to join the swim team
with confidence, and he knew he had
the support of his friends at the Y.
-Jacci Wood

ADDITIONAL INFO
WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING?
Children who are not potty-trained need to
wear a swim diaper. Long hair needs to be
tied-back to help them swim without the
distraction of hair in the face. Although not
required, we suggest that girls wear a one
piece suit so that they do not have to adjust
it while swimming.
CAN I WATCH MY CHILDS LESSON?
Yes! We require that parents stay during
lessons but ask that parents stay within the
seating areas so that the children are not
distracted.
WHAT IF WE MISS A CLASS?
Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be
offered for missed classes.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING BAD WEATHER?
The decision to cancel classes due to
inclement weather will be made as early as
possible. We will notify you of any
cancellations as soon as we can.
All sessions have 2 inclement weather make
up dates set in case classes are cancelled.
However, the YMCA can only guarantee 6
classes per session. Inclement weather make
-up days are typically on Fridays, same time.
WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT PARTICIPATE?
Once a session has begun, if the child is
pulled out of the class by the parents/
guardians, the YMCA will only issue a credit.
No refunds will be issued.

This initiative is funded by the Share the Spirit Fund. (See page 34)

Things to Know
Throughout the duration of the party, there will be a YMCA staff member who will assist with set up, clean up and any other needs
your party may have. The YMCA Party Host is available to serve food, cut cake and provide games. They are there to serve you and
your guests, so please don't hesitate to ask for assistance. Once registered, please be sure to stop by the Member Services desk to
pick up your pool party packet with invitations inside. Additional fees will apply for parties with additional swimmers as compared to
numbers listed. At the beginning of each party, swimmers will be swim tested to ensure their safety. Life jackets will be provided for
those that qualify. If a party host brings more swimmers than registered for, the lifeguards may require limited swimming. The host
will be responsible for any damages during the party.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING
During the Spring, we host several lifeguard trainings for
employees and community members. We use the Red Cross
Lifeguarding Program to officially certify lifeguards.

must swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath
control and rhythmic breathing. They may swim using the front
crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on
the back or side is not allowed. Participants must also be able
to retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the pool and
swim to the side using only their legs. They should be able to
tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Swim goggles

WHAT IS THE DANIEL PLAN?

The Daniel Plan is a groundbreaking healthy lifestyle educational program founded on
biblical principles and focused on The Essentials: Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and
Friends. The program offers an innovative approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle
where people get better together by optimizing their health in each of these life areas.
Each essential supports and influences the others, offering a practical step-by-step
approach for anyone to follow.
The essentials of Faith and Friends are what we call the secret sauce that makes The
Daniel Plan so effective. The program benefits are accelerated when done in a
supportive community of friends because God designed us to thrive in relationships.
We have learned that the process of getting healthy and staying healthy relies on the
support and encouragement of friends. With the support of God and your group, you
have far more than willpower helping you to make positive changes so you can be
consistent and sustain your new healthy lifestyle.
The overarching message of The Daniel Plan is about abundance, not deprivation, and this is why the
plan is both transformational and sustainable. The Daniel Plan teaches a step-by-step approach and
offers simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into your current lifestyle. Throughout the program
you are encouraged to rely on Gods power, and the application of dependable biblical principles.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Daniel Plan at the YMCA is a 7 week program that meets weekly to engage in conversation on how
to incorporate biblical teachings of health and wellness into our lives. Each week we address one of the
5 essential elements of a biblical healthy lifestyle.
Week 1: Introduction
You will receive The Daniel Plan book and Journal during the first
Week 2: Faith
meeting of your class. This will be your primary guide through
Week 3: Food
the program.
Week 4: Fitness
We encourage you to sign-up with at least one friend. While we hope
Week 5: Focus
you will make new friends in the class, having at least one person you
Week 6: Friends
connect well with will help keep you committed and accountable.
Week 7: Living the Lifestyle

WHY DOES IT BEGIN WITH FAITH?

The Daniel Plan starts with faith, because spiritual health gives you a foundation for building habits and
perspectives for health in any area. Health comes from recognizing and using Gods power in your life
and treating your body and mind with the care that he intended.
If you dont trust God to help you get healthy, all you are left with is willpowerand you know from
experience that willpower doesnt usually last very long. You get tired of doing whats right, and you
give up. Many self-help books tell you how to change, while The Daniel Plan gives you the power to
change Gods power.

NEW IMPACT
A Healthy Lifestyle
Program

The Children's Hospital of Greenville Health System designed

this comprehensive weight management program for children
ages 6 to 21. The mission of NEW IMPACT is to treat
overweight and obese children in the upstate of South Carolina
and empower them to develop active and healthy lifestyles. Our
team members target the exercise and eating behavior of the
entire family system. In 2013, the Easley and Pickens YMCAs
partnered with New Impact to begin serving children from our
community who were enrolled in the program.
Who is Eligible?

Your child must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than
or equal to the 85th percentile. Increased BMI is an
indicator of an increased risk of adult-type health
problems. (To calculate your childs BMI, go to
http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/ ).

If your child meets the above criteria, ask your physician

about NEW IMPACT or call the New Impact office @

SHARE THE SPIRIT

Each year, the Pickens County YMCA scholarships thousands of dollars to families and children in need in our community. We offer
valuable services that many in our community need and want to be a part of such as afterschool and summer camp. As a non-profit,
we strive to serve everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We raise money each year to fund what we call the Share the Spirit
Fund, which allocates money to those asking for help. All money that is donated to our Y stays in our community and goes directly
to those in need. In 2013, our YMCA provided $113,878 in scholarships!
Like many other non-profits, we strive to raise money so that we do not have to turn anyone away that is in need. However, in 2013
we were only able to raise $83,114 through direct donations, United Way and special events.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Pickens County YMCA is a community non-profit (501c3)
company that serves the local community through membership
and programs. The Y receives no government funding nor is it
governed by the community. The PC YMCA is governed by a
local Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD has full authority to
execute all decisions regarding policies, financial obligations,
supervision of the CEO, and the future happenings of the
YMCA. Board Members serve a 3 year term but are eligible to
serve again after one year. All board members are full
volunteers and receive no compensation or benefits for their
service to the YMCA.
The Pickens County Y BOD requests all matters regarding the
YMCA be brought to the staff and/or CEO. Day-to-day issues,
program decisions, facilities and interpretation of policy are the
decisions of the CEO.
The BOD serve primarily as a policy making body. They also
approve the vision of the YMCA, financial debts and supervision
of the CEO.
Board Members serve the YMCA by offering their 4-Ws.
