Track Tamping Machine

(GR & SR 4.65)
Track Tamping Machine is a self propelled vehicle fitted with a head light
and two parking lights and is having two parts, viz the engine and tamping cum
leveling units.
The Machine can run both by day and night
The T.T. machine shall be treated as a train for all purpose.
It will work during Traffic Block under direct supervision of Engineering
not below the rank of PWI.
PWI is responsible for taking such line block.
No Person shall be permitted to drive a T T M unless he is in possession
of a Competence Certificate.
There are Two Types of Machines:
a. Machines not requiring speed restrictions
Plain Tampers ( UT, UNO, DUO, CSM)
Points and Xing Tampers ( UNIMAT)
Rail Grinding Machines ( RGM)
Shoulders Ballast Clearing Machines ( FRM /SBCM)
b. Machines Requiring Speed Restrictions:
Ballast Clearing Machines ( BCM)
Relaying Machines like TRT, PQRS etc.
Points and Xing changing Machines ( T-28)
In addition to these two categories, there is another category of machines
which are called supporting machines and work along with both the first two
broad groups of machines.
Dynamic Track Stabliser ( DTS/DGS)
Ballast Regulators ( BRM)
Utility Vehicle

The productivity of Track Machines basically depends on the availability of

traffic blocks.
Working:

The T T M shall be considered as a train.

ATP should be on Form number T -465 or T/A 465
It is permitted to allow more than one TTM into the same block section.
In such case the person in charge shall personally supervise the
movement by traveling in the rear most machines.
A Caution Order shall be issued to each unit regarding working of another
unit ahead/ in rear.
ATP is will be handed over to the person in charge of the leading
machine.
A safety margin of 120 meters shall be maintained between the respective
units.
The speed of TTM shall be restricted to 40 kmph
The speed over points and crossing shall not exceed 10 kmph.
The person in charge shall inform the SM in writing, where he intends to
stop in the mid section, whether he will proceed to next station or
returning to the starting station.
The SM shall issue a caution order notifying the time at which the block
section shall be cleared and whether the unit will proceed to the next
station or to return to the starting station.
If it is required to be pushed back the following precautions shall be
observed.
a. While obtaining line clear the SM in advance shall be advised that the
machine will push back.
b. ATP T-465 shall be issued.
c. The official in charge shall travel in leading machine exhibiting hand
signals to the following machines (if any).
d. The maximum speed while pushing back shall not exceed 25 kmph
e. The official incharge shall be responsible to ensure that all level
crossing gates are closed against road traffic.

f. He shall stop the machine outside FSS or Adv. Starter and await hand
signals from the railway servant at foot of the signal. If no hand signals
are exhibited for a period of 5 minutes, he shall send a memo to SM
g. The SM shall ensure that all the points are correctly set and facing
points are locked before admission.
h. On Single line reception signals can be taken off.
i. On arrival at the station the Incharge shall sign in the TSR in token of
complete arrival of the unit/units, only after this the SM shall clear the
block section.
STABLING:
The SM shall arrange stabling of TTM in consultation with SCOR
The TTM shall normally be stabled on a non-running line.
When a TTM is stabled on a running line, the mechanical hand brakes
shall be applied, it shall be chained to the rails. Lever collars, slide
pins, collars shall be usued.
The TTM shall not be moved inside the Tfc yard with out the
permission of SM, no shunting is permitted on the line.
NOTE:
The TTM shall not be permitted to work during Total Interruption
oc Communication.
The Combination of TTM and Material train is not permitted to
work.
