Homework 1

EE 831
Advanced DSP
October 13, 2014
This homework is due on Friday, 17th October before the start of the class. You are
welcome to send me a soft copy of your assignment at aleem@pnec.nust.edu.pk before
Tuesdays class. You can consult one another for this assignment, but dont copy from one
another.

Reading Assignment

Read sections 3.3 and 3.5 from Chapter 3 of Signals and Systems, Oppenheim and Willsky,
Second Edition. Also, read sections 4.1-4.6 from Chapter 4 of the book.

Problems

Question 1. Each of the following signals may be simplified, and expressed as a single
sinusoid of the form: Acos(wt + ). For each signal, draw a vector diagram of the complex
amplitudes (phasors), and use vector addition to estimate the amplitude A and phase of
the sinusoid. Then use your calculator to find the exact values for A and .
a. xa (t) = 3 cos(30t + 7) + 5 cos(30t 2.5) 7 cos(30t 3/4)
b. xb (t) = 30 cos(400t /6) + 30 cos(400t 5/6) + 30 sin(400t + )
Question 2. The signal x(t) has the two-sided spectrum representation shown in Figure 1

Figure 1: Spectrum of x(t)

a. Write an equation for the signal x(t). Make sure to express x(t) as a real-valued signal.
Please use only cos(.) functions in your answer.
b. Is x(t) is periodic? If so, what is its fundamental period in Hertz?
Question 3. Prove the following three convenient relations involving complex conjugates.
a. <{z(t)} = 21 (z + z )
b. ={z(t)} = 2j1 (z z )
c. |z|2 = zz
Question 4. Consider the periodic function x(t) plotted in figure 2.

Figure 2: Signal x(t)

a. Find the DC value a0 .
b. Sketch the waveform of the signal y(t) = 2x(t T0 /2) and write down the Fourier
series coefficients b0 and bk for the Fourier series representation of the periodic signal.
y(t) =

without evaluating any integrals.

c. If we add a constant value of one to x(t), we obtain the signal w(t) = 1 + x(t). Make
a plot of the signal w(t). This signal can also be represented by a Fourier series,
w(t) =

Question 5. Find a positive amplitude A and phase so that the following equation is
true:
Acos(6t + /3) sin(6t + ) = cos(6t).
Use the phasor method. Provide a geometrical diagram to help explain your answer. To
ensure uniqueness, choose the amplitude A to be real and positive, and choose the phase
to satisfy < < .

Question 6. Suppose a real-valued signal x(t) that has the two-sided spectrum given in
figure 3.
The unknown variables A, B, c, , 1 , and 2 are all real, satisfying A > 0, B > 0,
and < 2 < . Although these variables are not given explicitly, they can be determined
uniquely from the spectrum plot.
1. Find 1 and 2 .
2. Find A and .
3. Find B and c.
4. Write an expression for x(t) involving only real numbers and cosine functions.
