Q. 1. Read the following passage and answer the question given below.
TV should never be held out as a carrot
An interview with IRA SAXENA, child psychologist.
The time is ripe to start thinking about the negative side of watching TV and, more
important, to take steps in the right direction, says Ira Saxena, child psychologist and
one of the founder members of the Association of Writers and Illustrators of Children.
She has authored nine books for children.
! Question :
Some parents are very strict about their children watching TV and
even disconnect the cable during exams while many have decided not
to buy a TV. Will this really help?
Answer:
I am absolutely against this . You cannot isolate the children from their
. surroundings. TV is a reality of modern living and we have to accppt it.
Besides, this denial like any other ~s not good psychologically for
I children because it develops in them a curiosity for the denied object.
They will go to their friend's house or to the market to watch. Such
steps also amount to putting the children in a protective cocoon. They
have to be taught to resist the evils and fight the dangers.
Question : How does one go about it when it comes to TV viewing?
Answer:
Controlling viewing is the best. Both the extent of viewing and the
content have to be control/ed. They must watch only what interests
i them . If parents do not want their children to see a particular
progamme they have to explain to them why. If the parents do not
monitor what their children are watching it can lead to premature
growing up. The children may undergo experiences, physically and
mentally, for which they are not prepared emotionally.
Question: This is easier said than done.
Answer:
Children learn best from their parents. If they s~e their parents viewing
only certain programmes they too will do the same. Parents can
effectively guide the children by making TV viewing a family activity.
Question : Some parents feel that TV help their children finish their home work
faster.
Answer:
TV should never be held out as a carrot or reward. It not only affects
the quality of their work but also gives rise to the feeling that denial of
TV is a punishment. It is neither.
Question:
Which is the best way to control TV viewing?
Answer:
The best way is to provide the child with aftemat1v~ w.~ys -Of

Water is at once man's greatest friend and foe. While it sustains life, it is also a killer
- floods and storms take a heavy to" of life every year. Water can be beautiful (you
never see the Taj Mahal without the accompanying pools) ; it can also be a dreaded
diseases like cholera.
Water has shaped history. The world's greatest civilizations have developed on the
banks of rivers . It has saved nations from conquests; it has also brought nations
closer by stimulating trade and commerce. Man has begun to probe distant planets
but the earth's oceans - a vast treasure trove of fish, minerals and petroleum. are
still a challenge to his courage and ingenuity. Water is abundant, covering nearly
three quarters of the earth, yet, it is a scarce resource. More than 97 percent of the
earth's water is found in the seas hence salty, unfit for drinking or for irrigation.
Another 2 percent is ice, locked up in the polar regions. Of the remaining one
percent, a good deal is trapped in underground reservoirs. What remains - man's
main source of water supply for all his needs - is the surface water of lakes, streams
and rivers. This is heavily polluted. For every 1000 gallons of water on earth, only
three are drinkable.
The world's supply of water is fixed and finite. There is essentially no more water
today than there was when civilization began. And it is the same water. The dribble
from a leaky faucet in our homes may be the liquid that slaked the thirst of a
dinosaur or watered the gardens of Chandra Gupta Maurya a few thousand years
ago. The water that lashes the earth today as rain is the same water that e\ia:J[
yesterday from the seas.
If man is to increase the supply of potable and usable wqter, he will have tc a
known sources with greater skill. He has to harness the seas (desalination ~
icebergs of the Antarctica, or purify polluted surface v/ater.

ques::o::.~. ~""
The skies are bright, the sun shines. The meadows are
Green and the flowers are in full bloom
I sit here, a forlorn creature,
An Indian girl, a barrier to success,
A spoiler of peace and good fortune.
A curse on the family, my parents say.
Can there be hope for a girl like me in this country of
men?
Their gods are women, their mothers are women
Yet I have no place in Mother India
I have wisdom, I have love,
I have dignity, I have "p~ace
Yet they seek to kill me .
While I was but an illusion of life
I was fortunate / unfortunate to appear in this family alive.
My sisters in countries across the sea don't suffer like
me,
But niy twin Chinese sister,does.
If I am not wanted, I am sold to the hands across the sea,
As a piece of cloth or bottle of perfume.
Can anyone understand the pain I feel?
My brothers are made to learn at school,
I am made to work at home for my brothers.
The world accepts me as an Indian girl,
But my India has not accepted me as yet.
The world acknowledges the Indian women as beautiful
and intelligent,
When will my India acknowledge my plight?
I know not why people don't want me.
Is it because I cause them a lot of expense when I'm old?
I too want to live, I too want to do the thingsrnybrothers do.
o people of India and the world over,
Hear my pathetic cry and give me a chance to live and prove myself.
Dome justice I pray, I too am created by God.
I too have a right to live as a free Citizen of India!
I want to be an equally free and happy creature.
Befitting the picture of a bright sky,
And green meadows with flowers in full bloom.
o India! Hear my plea!

3 . Write an Essay on Maggie's character as the binding force for all the characters
in the novel
15
4. Read the passage and explain. What is happening in the novel .from this
8
passage
Maggie's Intentions, as usual, were on a larger scale than Tom had imagined. The
resolution that gathered in her mind. after Tom and Lucy had walked away, was not so
simple as that of going home. No! She would run away and to the Gypsies, and Tom should
never see her any more. That was by no means a new idea to Maggie; she had been so often
told she was like a Gypsy and 'half wild' that when she was miserable it seemed to her the.
only way of escaping opprobrium, and being entirely in harmony with circumstances would
be to live in a little brown tent on the commons; the Gypsies, she considered, would gladly
receive her and pay her much respect on account of her superior knowledge. She had once
mentioned her views on this point to Tom and suggested that he should stain his face
brown and they should run away together; but Tom rejected the scheme with contempt,
observing that Gypsies were thieves, and hardly got anything to eat, and had nothing to
drive but adonkey~ Today, however-, Maggie thought her misery had reached a pitch at
which Gypsydom was her only feruge, and she rose from her sear on the roots of the tree
with the sense that this was a great crisis in her life; she would run straightaway till she
came to Dunlow Common, where there would certainly be Gypsies; and cruel Tom, and the
rest of her relations who found fault with her, should never see her any more. She thought
of her father as she ran along, but she reconciled hersel~ to the idea of parting with him by
detennining that sJ:1e would secretly send him a letter By a small Gypsy who would run
away without telling where she was and just let him know that she was well and happy
and always loved him very much.
Maggie soon got out of breath with running, but by the time Tom got to the pond again,
she was at the distance of three long fields and was on the edge of the lane leading to the
highroad. She stopped to pant a little, reflecting that running away w~s not a pleasant
thing until one had got quite to the common where the Gypsies were, but her resolution
had not abated; she presently passed through the gate into the lane, not knowing where it
would lead her, for it was not this way that they came from Dorlcote Mill to Garum Firs,
and she felt all the safer for that, because there was no chance of her being overtaken. But
she was soon aware, not without trembling, that there were two men coming along the lane
in front of her; . she had not thought of meeting strangers - she had been too much
occupied with the idea of her friends coming after her.
