Please send along with this form copies of recommendations from churches which will encourage
other churches to support your missionary work. There are churches which will not allow a
visiting missionary to speak unless a church recommendation can be shown. Since it is impos
sible for any one person to know all Christians in the world, this recommendation by a respon
sible New Testament church is a vital help in persuading others of your worthiness and the value

of your mission. Mission Services stands ready to help you inform HORIZONS readers about
your church recommendations. Since the church is sending you to the mission field (Acts 13:1-3)
and will help provide the necessary needs on the field, naturally the church should share the
credit in your missionary ministry. One of the ways that the church can do this is to share their
conviction regarding your missionary ministry with others. Certainly, their words will help
convince others regarding the worthiness of your work. Please help MISSION SERVICES to
spread your news through HORIZONS, Packets and Slide library by sending your church recom
mendations as soon as possible. Thanks. Send what you have now, and the others later.

Dear Bill,
Here is the lona-awaited picture, even if it does make me look

chubby-cheeked I

See the second page for my story about our work.

This summer we will live in Mother and Dad's house on the mission

property in order to be close for the "emergencies", and since

the shop is next to the house, making it convenient for Reuben's
various Jobs.

My folks will leave June 15 and spend the summer

speaking to their supporters in Fla.

1202 Northshore Drive. Eustis, Fla.

Addres^is their home at

32726.^'ln the interum,

^ur apartment will be occupied by our close friends Robert and

Penny Lanyon (he was formerly minister at our Kaneohe church)
and their son Stephen, born a few days ago on April 6! Bob
is an English teacher and has been teaching at Kaimuki Christian

1
Church's day school, and is hoping to be hired by the Dept. of
I ] Education
(Hawaii). As he does not know where he might be placed,
they must sit out the summer waiting for word on that. Hence the
housing round-robin.

This way we will still have our apartment

wheh my folks return, as rentals are difficult to find, at any

\ price. Also we have put a lot of work into Improving this place
VAnd hate to let that goy

of anywhere on the~TsTind.

Our rent, $150, Is the lowest we know

As our support is only $85 so far,

we are becoming somewhat anxious to see it rise before we must

resume paying rent in Sept. Also there is that chance that the

rent will be raised, especially if we ask for some improvements.

I won't be alarmed if we don't get a copy of Horizons for months.

Such mail comes truly "slow boat" and when space is available.
They always arive 30 to^^AS-da-vs or more after publication date.
Perhaps you court's end the one with our oicture etc by res^ular
mail?

Page three of this episle is an unimproved idea for the Horizons

presentation of us.

Take it for what it is worth, if anything.

It s not easy to write your own news items.

As the time for discharge and the new induction (to the mission

work) draws near, we are excited and exhileratei.

We are looking

for full support as an indication of God's approval; otherwise

what are we to do? One cannot do both mission work, and do it

Juf:tice, and hold a job that proviies adequate income.

Pray

with us about it, and we pray God will give you the ability to
present our need in print so that others see the urcenoy of nun
needs.

In Him,

Reuben ad^ Connie Nichols

Re\iben and Connie (Roth) Nichols, children of veteran missionaries

Edgar and the latei^Mable Nichols and Don and Jo Roth, are goining the
staff of Sundet Beach Church of Christ and Christian School.

Reuben

will assist his father-in-law in maintenance of the property and

maintain the vehicles used in the mission work.

Connie will be

working in the church and school offices, and doing substitute

teaching, etc. with the school, as well as assisting in the maintenance
work.

Reuben and Connie were raised on this mission field and were

students of the Christian School.

For the past two years, Reuben

has been stationed at an Air Force base in Hawaii and they have
been active in the mission work.

Reuben*s work on the vehicles

has saved mission personel much money.

Reuben Nichols was bom June 1, 1948 at Batan, Tibet( TibetianChinese).

He was baptized at Lincoln

He has been active in the

church work at Hawaii and McKinley Indian Mission in Toppenish,

Constance (Connie) Jo Roth Nichols was born February 16, 1948

She was graduated from high school in Eustis, Florida.

She attended Atlanta Christian College, Atlanta, Georgia.

She

has been active in the chiurch also in Hawaii and Florida with the

Edgar Nichols solemnized their vows.

Veteran missionaries, Owen and Mrs. Shirley Still write:** We wish

to express in Horizons to our friends M

everywhere our appreciation

of Connie Roth Nichols and Reuben Nichols.

We have known them both

since childhood and to us they seen like close relatives one might
say grandchildren.

Though their plans being made to work for Christ

envision practical matters particularily, we would like to say both

Connie and Reuben are really spiritual Christians and still growing,
as we all ought to be doing.

No Bible School class, women's group

or church congregation will make a mistake by deciding to send them

monthly support.**

Glen A. Powell, missionary and preacher at the

Sunset Beach Church of Christ in Hawaii writes:** I am happy to commend

to you Reuben and Connie Nichols for the work they feel God wants them

to do at Sunset Beach.

Since both have missionary parents and have

been raised on the mission field, they are well aware of both the

Joys and frustrations of such service.

This is why I feel they are

making their decision with careful thought and are fully aware of the
responsibilities of mission service.

The Lord's Work at Sunset has

been growing steadily, both Church and School.

Reuben and Connie

bring quite a variety of skills and abilities that will be a real

blessing to His Work here.

I pray that you will seek His will as you

consider what you can share with Reuben and Connie.**

First Church

of Christ, Eustis, Florida sends this word:** Connie has lived in

Bustis for all of her life except for the time she was wii^ her

parents in Hawaii serving the Sunset Beach School.

Jo's home congregation.

This is Donald and

The elders are very happy to commend Connie

to the brotherhood as one who can, and will apply her talents and

dedication to the Lord's Work.

Since we have met Rexiben only briefly,

we can commend him only by the fact that the Roths commend him very
highly, and that his record and reputation seem to be

the very best.**

Their needs include one big item, $450 monthly livinglink support.

( Page - 3 - Second Generation Kissionaries -

At this writing they have only $85 monthly support pledged which is
not adequate to pay their rent( noe $150 and likely to rise).

As the fipat paragraph will indicate, this Is-^fTTiotional

story of our daily routine as it may be. Bill/ -Ju^s-t use it
as you can; I belike it ^repxasents adequately ths hectic

way things are around here I

Mission work is often full of the unexpected, though not

necessaril/ifroraantic or exotic.

My days will truly be that, as

my work will often be substitution for other workers when they

are i l l or otherwise unable to be there.
Perhaps a day such as
this would be my lot:

At 6:30 s-ni, the phone <w^iE^me to announce that my services are

needed as bus driver.
I can only pray the battery is not dead,
as I must leave at Y 6'clock.
The first load to fill the VW van
live on a apuntain, and these children are delivered to the
Christian School by 5^:30.
Then I drive along the costal flat
land to :ick up another load of children, getting them to
school before the 7:55 bell.
Upon returning the bus key to the
office, I learn that one of the teachers has the flu and would
I be willing to..,? Of course, I am willing to teach a class of

wild kids, delirious at having a; substitute teecher to bossl

Fortunately, the lesson plans are handy and the kids turn out
to be somewhat helpful at finding the correct answer booklets for
me.

School is finally out at 2 pm and now I must return all the child
ren safely to their homes before giving two piano lessons at

home on my 100-year old, ^75 piano, termite eaten and getting

out

of tune.

By then it is time to fix our evening meal. The bed Is not made
yet and my daily quota of thank you notes with receipts is not
written, but I can accomplish some while the meal cooks,
Reuben comes in bone weary.

His day started early too.

First

he had to do a quick minor tune-up on one of the teachers' cars

before she

could take her class on an excursion to the museum.

The work plan of the day was to scrape peeling paint from under
the eaves of one of the older buildings in preparation for re

painting.

Here he discovered termite damage such that a rafter

had to be spliced and new wood put In.

portion of the morning and afternoon.

That took the major

There was Still an oil

who-know s-what.

In the evening we work together How romantic 1

flashlight while Reuben is under yet another car.

While the

facilities for his work are inadequate, we still thank CJod

that his skill is able to save our fellow-missionaries so much

money on their transportation expenses.

So ends a busy day.

We fall asleep

wondering what wild sched

jLbout the time of our move, we were asked to house-sit for a fev;

of work So now at last we are really getting settled. We i:now

November, 1973

Dear ones.in Christ,

_If September whizzed by, October, dragged. My stint of teach

ing Jiindergarten alone extended to six weeks. Eleanor Sprankles is
back now, and tho' still co-teaching, I am greatly relieved to h-ve a
little time to do what has had to be set aside for so long. Eor a
change, the house is clean, the clothes are washed and ironed, and I'm
getting to this correspondence and other jobs that require concentration,
Reuben had a busy and productive month. With Glen Rowell away,

we had to ^ess at what to do in some cases, with necessity as the

mother of invention. "Nick", short for Nichols, designed and built

a cabinet for the Kindergarten room and did a very good job (brag,
brag!) Sealer is being applied now. He came to the rescue when one
of the highly prized Kindergarten tricycles broke twice, and he was
"^able -to weld it both t imes. He -was the^hero ==^gain when -he- f i^csd- aQ^ur

leaky classroom roof.

He has our garden producing tomatoes and beans,

with carrots, peas and lettuce to follow.

The property is bright with

flowers.

A mishap:

VJhile putting a 2-drawer filing Cabinet into our

bug,

the salesman dropped his end and the box broke the windshield. ..;27 for
parts, but at least we saved ourself labor charges by struggling with
it o\irselves.

The problems of a small car

The young adults here had heard a tape of the rock musical "Come
Together" and were avid to put it on, so asked me to direct. It is a
real challenge, with very few trained voices and no books yet. But

after four rehersals, I am very pleased with them, and more confident
of my stale abilities. This group is so concerned about witnessing
and they feel sure this gospel rock music will reach some who would

never listen to "churchy" music. It's not my idea of "good music",

but I am striving to accept it because it does give God the glory and
present the true way to salvation.

\ve are so thankful about the many people and groups who support
us.

v/e ioiow this is a time of economic stress and strain for almost

everyone, so really appreciate your contjjiued giving, ,/e pray God

will guide you to renew your p l e d g e t h e coming year.

W^ite this, giving copies to people who show a sincere interest (since
printing isn't exactly cheap.) A copy is yours for the aux^iin too.

Again,we ask you to support us in prayer.

There are lots of

wondering moments, times when we don't know which course is best.

We have to rely on God so much of the time, and that just strengthens
our faith in His omniscience.

In His loving care,
