Although Chemark has been operating in this space for some time, due to the
accelerated decision-making time frames
associated with the industries we serve, we
feel it is opportune to ofcially form a divisional activity around our experienced
staff, said Dr. Phil Phillips, president and
managing director of Chemark.
Dr. Phillips will head the new GSPD
while John Lowry and Dan Watson will
concentrate on the Americas and Europe/Asia-Pacic regions respectively.

The old paths to hiding have run their course. At Dow, we can
help you Rethink Hidingwith flexible technology choices that can
stretch your TiO2 supplies, reduce your raw material costs and
deliver equal or better levels of hiding and performance.
Lets get your experts talking to our experts about EVOQUETM
Pre-Composite Polymer Technology, our breakthrough in emulsion
polymers that improves TiO2 particle distribution and light
scattering efficiency. Or consider our industry-leading ROPAQUETM
Opaque Polymers for your new formulations. Better yet, add both
technologies and take advantage of the combined results.
The point is, when youre working with Dow Coating Materials,
youve got OPTiO2NS. And in todays competitive coatings world,
thats a smart place to be.

12 months.
When independent research, such as
the J.D. Power and Associates Study, tells
us that consumers love and appreciate
Benjamin Moore paint, its tremendous
validation for the integrity and quality of
our products, said Denis Abrams, chairman, president and CEO of Benjamin
Moore & Co. Whats especially gratifying about this study is that do-ityourselfers are voicing their preference.
Consistently, we hear from design professionals that Benjamin Moore is their brand
of choice, so its good to have such positive feedback from this other part of the
population thats hands-on with paint.
Benjamin Moore topped the brand
rankings of the studys inaugural release
in 2007, and since then the company has
grown its product portfolio to include
green interior paint formulations including Aura and Natura.

Little Joe Industries offers the ADM Automatic Draw-Down Machine for use with
grind gages. The ADM automates the draw down process controlling scraper
angle, speed, and force. Since these aspects are no longer operator dependent your grind gage draw-downs will be more consistent while requiring less
operator training and supervision.
Uses existing grind gages and scrapers from your current supplier.
US and foreign patents apply.

Nanoslide Iron Coating to be used in MercedesBenz diesel engines for lower consumption
After ve years of use exclusively in AMG engines, twin-wire arc
spraying technology will now also be used in the series production
of Mercedes-Benz diesel engines. Mercedes-Benz was the developer
of what is now known as Nanoslide technology, in which twin-wire
arc spraying is used to melt iron/carbon wires and spray them onto
the cylinder surfaces of the lightweight aluminium crankcase with
the help of a gasow.
Very ne nishing of the resulting nano-crystalline iron coating
creates an almost mirror-like, smooth surface with ne pores, which
reduces friction and wear between the piston assembly and the cylinder wall. Other advantages include lower engine weight, less fuel
consumption and lower emissions. This innovation from MercedesBenz has been successfully used in the 6.3-liter AMG engines since
2006.
Mercedes-Benz uses the collective term Blue Efciency to describe a whole range of different measures designed to reduce fuel
consumption and emissions: sophisticated aerodynamics, weightsaving measures and intelligent control of ancillary units are a few
examples. With Nanoslide technology, the worlds oldest automobile manufacturer is adding another innovation to this technology
package. It sets new standards in the production of cylinder linings.
These help to ensure that the piston moves up and down within the
cylinder with the least possible friction losses. Comparatively heavy
grey cast-iron liners with a thickness of up to ve millimeters are the
current state of the art.
The Nanoslide procedure takes a new approach. Wires of
iron/carbon alloy are melted in an electric arc, and the melted material is sprayed onto the cylinder wall by a gasow, where it is deposited as a layered, ultra-ne to nano-crystalline coating. The
Nanoslide coating is then given an extremely smooth nish by a special honing process, after which it has a thickness of only 0.1 to 0.15
millimeters and has a mirror-like surface. The honing process also
exposes pores in the material which are able to retain oil and thereby
ensure optimal lubrication of the piston assembly. The result is not
only low friction, and therefore greatly reduced mechanical friction
losses compared to grey cast-iron cylinder liners (up to 50 percent),
but also extremely high wear resistance. CW

GAF and Johns Manville now control the lions share of the
white roong material market. Among materials used for white
sheets are vinyl, EPDM, and the most rapidly growing, TPO or
thermoplastic polyolen.
TPO consists of polymer/ller blends usually consisting of
some fraction of PP (polypropylene), PE (polyethylene), BCPP
(block copolymer polypropylene), rubber, and a reinforcing
ller, according to Wikipedia. TPO now is used in more than a
third of roong installations, according to one industry estimate.
The liquid products will nd greater demand in recoating
black or white roofs, since the liquid is less expensive than the
sheets, says Jonathan Ursini, the marketing manager for
DuROCK Alfacing International, of Woodbridge, Ontario,

Chemically bonded phosphate ceramics create a passivation layer that stops corrosion,
protected by a tough ceramic outer layer.
paint is scratched, chipped, or breached and corrosion promoters enter the gap between the substrate and polymer coating. Then the coating can act like a greenhousetrapping
water, oxygen and other corrosion promotersallowing corrosion to spread.
Placing sacricial, reactive elements next to steel that will corrode rst, such as zinc and galvanized coatings, is another strategy. This works until the sacricial elements are used up and
recoating must be done, usually after a few years.
Cathodic protection, where a negative voltage is imposed on
steel, can limit corrosion on pipelines or other stationary, continuous metal structures where voltage can be attached. But this
can fail if its not properly insulated and voltage goes to ground.
For assets that demand long-term corrosion protection, stainless steel alloys work. But with stainless steel costing up to six
times more than mild steel, this option is often cost prohibitive.
Ideally, engineers, facility managers and industrial paint contractors would want the long-term corrosion-resistance of a stainless
steel part with the lower cost of coating application. A new category

BASF will invest in a world-scale production site for acrylic acid, butyl acrylate
and superabsorbent polymers (SAP) in
Camaari, Bahia, Brazil. It will be the rst
acrylic acid and superabsorbents plant in
South America. With an investment volume of more than 500 million, it is the
largest investment in BASF's century-long
history in South America.
In addition, BASF will start to produce
2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate, an important raw
material for the adhesives and special
coatings industries, in its existing chemical complex in Guaratinguet, So Paulo.
This will be the rst plant for this product in South America.
With the new acrylic acid complex,
BASF aims to ensure the supply for important products as: superabsorbents for
diapers, acrylic resins for coatings, textiles and adhesives and products for civil
construction.
The Camaari location is being chosen
based on the availability of raw materials
(propylene) and utilities provided by
Braskem S.A., the major chemical company in Brazil and the strategic supplier
for BASF in this project.
The construction of the new acrylic
acid complex will start in 2011. Production is expected to begin in the fourth
quarter of 2014. The production for 2ethyl-hexyl acrylate in Guaratinguet is
expected to start in 2015 on the basis of
acrylic acid produced in Camaari.
Acrylic acid is an important precursor in
the value chain of super-absorbent polymers,
the active component of baby diapers and
other hygiene products. Acrylic esters, the
most important derivatives of acrylic acid,
are used to produce adhesive raw materials,
construction chemicals and architectural
coatings such as Suvinil, BASF's decorative
coatings brand in South America and the
leader in the premium segment in Brazil.
