From the Pastors Desk

Remembrance Mass

How do we, the Parish of Forster Tuncurry, rate when

it comes to our ability to offer hospitality and
welcome, both to the large number of visitors who
grace us but also, and perhaps more importantly, to
the permanent and regular members of our
community?

Each year during November the Catholic Church in

Forster Tuncurry holds a Remembrance Mass where
we remember our departed loved ones and celebrate
their new life with God and His saints in heaven.

I ask this because I sometimes think we dont do too

badly at this task of welcome that is a fundamental
element of our identity as a Christian presence in the
Great Lakes area. And then I hear a report of an
occasion when we have failed spectacularly. During
this past week I heard about another of those failures
of hospitality, a story that I found particularly
distasteful because of the particular circumstances.

Following the Mass we will share some refreshments

in the Church Hall.

It is unfortunate that our failures will always be

rememberedparticularly by those who are the
victims of our failureswhile any of our successes
are chalked up to exactly what should happen.

By choosing a Caritas Global Gift this year, you are

helping to spread the message that together, as one
global family, we are making the world a better place.
There are six Caritas Australia Global Gifts which
encompass the range of Caritas Australias community
development programs including food, healthcare,
education and water, as well as the unique gift of
emergency assistance. They range in price from $10 to
$250. Visit www.caritas.org.au/globalgifts for more
information.

This years Mass will be held on Thursday 20th

November at 5.00pm in the Forster Church.

In addition, there will be Remembrance Books in

both churches during November to which you may like
to add the names of your departed loved ones.

Caritas Christmas Gifts

Such a practice might be unfair, but it is, alas, the

reality of our current society.
The task of hospitality and welcome is not just a task
that a small group exercises on our behalf. It is, and
quite rightly so, a task that belongs to all of us,
individually and corporately.

Aurora out this Weekend

As we get closer to that time of year when we will

welcome a large number of visitors to our community
and our worship, it is timely for all of us (myself
included) to be reminded that one of the primary
duties we have as Christians gathered for worship on a
Sunday is to welcome our brothers and sisters in faith
with grace and warmth.

Copies are available from the rear of the church.

Liturgical Rosters
Liturgical rosters for the months of December and
January to include the Christmas season and
additional Masses are now available from the rear of
the churches.

This might mean some personal inconvenience at

times (especially when someone sits in our seat, or
when a child is unsettled by unfamiliar surroundings)
but surely that is a small sacrifice when compared
with the wonderful gift of being enriched by the
presence of others.

Please consider volunteering if you recognise a

shortfall over this busy period. Thank you.

Vocation View

Its worth a thought perhapsI know Ive been called

to reflect...

Since you have been faithful in small matters, you will

be given greater responsibility. To follow the Lord is
to slowly grow in the love of the Lord, practicing small
steps of virtue in order to grow to a vibrant faith in
Christ. For more information regarding vocations
contact Fr Brian Mascord on 02 4979 1112 or
vocations@mn.catholic.org.au.

Homily by Richard Leonard SJ

None of this minimises the pain and hurt some

women have experienced at the hands of the Church.
Some feel as though their particular contribution to
the life of the Church has not been fully realised.

As Catholics we have no problem with the time-bound

nature of the Bible. In fact we appreciate it, believing
that the scriptures deserve to be read within their
context, and also need careful interpretation. And
while the Catholic Feminist Association may not
choose to have todays first reading as the opening
text at their next convention, we would be mistaken
to hear it only in terms of our world today.

All we can hope and pray for is that we may find ways
to use everyones talents for the building up of the
Kingdom of God, and that we may see that everyones
contribution, irrespective of gender, is precious and
worthy of praise.

The Book of Proverbs is a distillation of sayings and

teachings which had grown up over hundreds of years,
most probably from Rabbis and Scribes. Its world is a
vastly different one to ours. This is clearly seen in the
tasks of the capable wife. She is praised for her work
with wool, flax, in the vineyard and in real estate. Its
only in the context of an agrarian society that the
power of this text makes sense.

Richard Leonard SJ.

Tools for Planning Ahead

Protecting your choices into the future. Have you
ever wondered what will happen if you were unable
to look after yourself in the future? What can you do
now to make sure that your wishes are known and
followed, if a time came later when you were unable
to speak for yourself? Come along for a free
presentation by a solicitor on Powers of Attorney and
Enduring Guardianship on Wednesday 19th
November from 10:30am to 12pm at the Manning
Uniting Church, Albert St, Taree. RSVP to Mid North
Coast Community Legal Centre on 6580 2111.

Until quite recently, women in Palestinian society, and

in wider society for that matter, were considered the
possessions of their husbands. They could be bought,
sold, divorced, or killed without any appeal to the law.
Wives in this society had no legally recognised human
rights. They were expected to serve and shut-up.
By contrast, then, this text from the Book of Proverbs,
which can seem so old-fashioned to us, was a
liberating text in its day. A womans right to work is
not only defended, but also extolled. She is praised for
her creativity, wisdom, goodness, strength, sense of
justice, generosity, joy and faith. In any age and for
either gender this is not a bad list of virtues toward
which we should all aspire.

Prayer for Peace

We have lately all been made aware of the terrible
suffering and torture of people in war torn countries
throughout the world. We are particularly concerned
with the plight of Christian people at the mercy of ISIS
in Iraq. We pray for an end to this violence and a
peaceful solution to these conflicts.

And these days of course, through the ongoing

revelation of the Spirit, we believe that what the Book
of Proverbs expects and praises in a capable wife, we
should equally look for in a capable husband.

Parish Intercessory Prayer Group

Our Parish is blessed to have an Intercessory Prayer
Apostolate. This group is comprised of a loose knit
group of parishioners who simply pray during their
normal daily prayers for people on a list updated and
distributed each month.

It is almost possible that Jesus had women in mind

when he shared the parable of the talents in todays
Gospel. What can often get lost in the debates about
who should be ordained in todays Church, is that
women have always and still lead the Church in
powerful and long-lasting ways. From the
extraordinary abilities of religious and lay women in
Catholic welfare, education, healthcare, overseas
missions and theological reflections, to wives and
mothers whose daily witness to the fidelity and
goodness of God, this all reveals in innumerable ways
the power of the parable of the talents. The reality is
that if it were not for womens leadership,
commitment and faith, it would be hard to see how
the Church could survive. We would not be able to
continue almost all of our ministries.

There are no meetings and no cost whatsoever and

each member may remain anonymous if desired.
Because there are no meetings this group is very
suitable for all parishioners, especially some of our
housebound or incapacitated folk enabling them to
play an important and active role within the life of the
parish community.
If you are interested in joining this group, just ring Bob
Cashman on 6555 5914 or leave your name and phone
number with the Parish Office. To request prayers for
someone in need of prayer please contact Bob on
6555 5914 leaving your name and contact details.
