R LUSK TEACHER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS


1. What is your current teaching assignment?
Rivelon Elementary 5th grade, Science and Social Studies.

2. Where did you receive your educational background?


I received my K-12 education in the public schools of Jackson, Mississippi. I received my
undergraduate degree in education at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi and my
graduate degree at The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
3. How long have you worked at this school, and has this been your only teaching assignment? If
not, tell me about your other teaching experiences. What schools? How many years? What
grade level and what subjects?
This is my 3rd year at Rivelon and my 11th year teaching. My first school was Riley Street Middle
School in Hudsonville, MI, 7th grade science and math.

4. What is the demographic make-up of your class? Performance level?


90 percent African American, 10 percent Hispanic. 60 percent of students met or are above
level, 30 percent are below level and 10% are exemplary.

5. Why did you choose the teaching profession?


I chose the teaching profession because I wanted to give back to my community. I wanted to
help everyone but I really wanted to help African American males and I thought teaching would
be the best career for me to do so.

6. Do you feel that your courses/student teaching preparation prepared you adequately for your
own classroom? Please explain your answer.
I feel that it prepared me but its almost nothing compared to having your own classroom and
students. I had an awesome mentor teacher which also made my experience thrilling. Looking
back, student teaching prepares you the most for classroom management because curriculum
and technology changes every so often

7. How do you teach to meet the diverse needs of your students?


I meet the needs of students by differentiated instruction. I also assess the students very often.

8. Describe your grading procedures and the methods that you use to assess your students
achievement.
District office has assigned a grading scale and procedures. 60 percent class work/participation
40 percent quizzes and test.

9. What advice would you give me, as a beginning teacher, that would help me to adjust to having
my own classroom and students that would help me to be an effective teacher?
Be knowledgeable of content not being afraid to ask for help, and staying up to speed with the
current best practices.
10. Describe your strategies that comprise your classroom management system? Are your strategies
effective, in your opinion? Please explain.
Strategies consist of being form, fair, and consistent. Meaning a teacher has to be consistent
with expectations. Ensure you have those expectations procedures and academics.
