andevenexciting:asidefromastraightforwardpagewherealertsareactuallytypedandsent
likeachatmessage,atabalsorevealsthat59.829studentsareconnectedandCricketaccounts
forlessthan10%ofcarriers.
CooperSystems,asubsidiaryofthepowermanagementcompanyEaton,wascontracted
byUTtosetitupin2007duetotheproliferationofcellphones,Cronksaid,oustingtheold
pageronlymethod.Officially,itsknownasCooperNotificationsRoamSecureAlertNetwork.
Theyprovidethirdpartysupportandhostthewebsite,soitllstillworkintheeventoftheUT
networkgoingdown.Buttheyvehaveleftthemanagementandusageofitentirelyuptothe
university.
UTswitchedthesystemafteracoupleofyearsfromoptintooptoutforanyoneenrolled
hereitsenabledbydefaultnowandusagepredictablysored,Cronksaid.Today,students
takeitatfacevalue,focusingmoreonthequirksrelatedtoinexplicablelagsindeliverytimeand
thesyntaxofthemessages.
