HAPPENINGS
Get into the holiday spirit by attending local events
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
As the air is starting to get a little colder,
the urge to stay inside might take over.
However, there will soon be the twinkling of
Christmas lights, hot beverage sales and
fun holiday events in Moorestown, just in
time to get you in the holiday spirit. There
are a lot of holiday happenings going on in
Moorestown that people surely will not
want to miss.
Kicking off the 2014 holiday season will
be the second annual tree lighting celebration on Dec. 1 at the Moorestown Community House. CBS 3 and Moorestowns own
Kathy Orr will once again join the Community House along with approximately 1,500
citizens on the front lawn of to continue
this memorable tradition celebrating the
most wonderful time of the year.

The Community House represents

Moorestowns unity and focus on giving
back. Our mission is to bring people together and bond them to our town. The tree
lighting unites friends, families and organizations in such a positive way, and I am
thrilled that we are able to bring this tradition to our community, said Laurie Palko,
trustee and chair of the Tree Lighting Committee.
Festivities will begin on the front lawn at
5:30 p.m. and will include a childrens story
by Timothy R. Hollybottom, musical entertainment by the Madrigals and the Philly
POPS, warm clothing collections by
MooreKids, hot chocolate donated by
Brandywine Senior Living, cookies and
water donated by Wegmans, a toy collection
by the Salvation Army and candy canes

DeCafe to welcome
The Honey Dewdrops
The Moorestown DeCafe is delighted to welcome Virginiabased roots duet The Honey Dewdrops on Nov. 21. Laura Wortman
and Kagey Parrish blend new
Americana and traditional folk
music, creating inspired songs
rooted in the experience of real
people. Not to be pegged as just
another singer-songwriter couple, they embed a sparse Appalachian clarity in every song
achieving a sound that is transcendent.
With music that covers the
ground spanning hand-crafted
folk songs, Appalachian fiddle
tunes and a cappella spirituals,
every song shines with energy
and emotion through intimate
performances. With a handful of
acoustic instruments and tightly
layered harmonies, the duo fills

orry to say this so early, while 60degree days were here just a few
days ago, but, alas, the holiday
season has arrived.
The good news is that means many
good-hearted people and organizations
will be gathering food, clothing, toys,
money and other items for those less
fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event or drive as successful as
possible. But to do that, we need your
help.
Many retailers count on Black Friday to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-

pend on the publics generosity during

the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks is best). We need to know
what types of items you are trying to
collect, who will benefit from the drive,
and, most importantly, how people can
get involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address to the right.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to accomplish and how they can be a part of
it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always are
people in need. Let us help you to help
them. Send us your event information
and lets make this a big donation year.

Cost to treat chemical compound in water supply

estimated between $2 million and $4 million
Township manager also says it could be 12 to 18 months to set up treatments
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Township manager Scott Carew gave
preliminary numbers for the cost and time
frame of treatment options for the 1,2,3
Trichloropropane (TCP) at the township
council meeting on Monday, Nov. 10. It is estimated that the cost could be between $2
million and $4 million, and it could be 12 to
18 months to get the treatments set up.
All of these numbers are elementary
until we decide what direction we are
going in, Carew said.
At the meeting, Mayor Chris Chiacchio
suggested the township put out a Request
for Proposal for a consultant. Council
members Greg Newcomer, Phil Garwood

and Victoria Napolitano agreed this would

be a good option. Deputy Mayor Stacey Jordan was not at the meeting.
I think it would be good to look for a
consultant who is schooled in these types
of matters, with the educational background and experience, who can come to
meetings and answer these questions. Im
not an expert in these things, so lets get an
expert in to look at it and discuss it and
give us a plan, Chiacchio said.
The consultant would be asked to evaluate treatment options for eliminating the
presence of TCP from the townships water
supply. The township would go out to bid
for a contractor to eliminate the contaminant after the consultants evaluation is
complete.

Chiacchio also expressed his concern

with the time frame, saying he would like
to see something in place by April or May.
This decision was made as questions
from residents continued to come in about
TCP and the towns water supply. Since
Moorestown closed two wells for further
evaluations and concern over the TCP
being found in the water since 2013, the
people of Moorestown want answers.
The township has said the amount of
TCP in the water is not enough to cause
health problems unless a person drinks an
excessive amount of water over a long period of time. However, the council chose to
close the wells as a precaution.

Works Club will hold its 7th annual charitable flag football tournament on Friday, Nov. 28 at Wesley

time of day when children are
most at risk to become involved
in dangerous activities.
At Thanksgiving, we gather as
a community family to host a fun
flag football tournament to benefit Camden youth, said Joe
Ehrline, MCWC founder. Fifty
volunteers host the event with
major pillar support from the
Holman Automotive Group to ensure the tournament delivers fi-

nancial resources to BGCCC for

integral Camden youth programs.
This event gets bigger and better every year. Its amazing to
have so many people kids and
adults come together for the
club, said Brandi Johnson,

a difference. Youth activities like
tennis with Mr. Stu, SMART Girls

The
Moorestown
Friends
School fall musical, Shrek The
Musical will take place Nov. 2123 in the MFS Auditorium.
Based on the blockbuster
movie and the book by William
Steig, the story begins with an
ogre named Shrek.
On his seventh birthday,
Shreks parents send him out on
his own to make a living.
They warn him that because of
his looks everyone will hate him

and he will not have a happy ending.

Shrek goes on to meet a host of
disgruntled fairytale creatures, a
princess named Fiona and a sidekick Donkey who helps him save
his swamp.
Brandon Beach 15 (Lumberton) plays the title role, and Pilar
Martinez 15 (Moorestown) plays
Princess Fiona. Noah Borromeo
17 (Roebling) stars as Donkey,

by introducing them to leadership theory and practice. Special
attention is paid to how Quaker
beliefs inform and influence what
sort of leaders the students will
become. The course includes
skill-building in making persuasive presentations, engagement
in consensus-building activities
and collaboration on team management exercises.
The leadership students will
prepare for Stoeckels visit by
reading excerpts from his new
book, The Wawa Way, which addresses the servant leadership
style. In contrast to the command
leadership style, servant leadership prioritizes encouraging and
supporting employees to unfold
their full potential.
Stoeckel will also meet with
senior economics students in a
roundtable discussion.
Stoeckel is currently vice
chairman of the Wawa Board of

Turkey and Pie Drive

set for Nov. 24
The Moorestown Home and

Drive on Monday, Nov. 24. A timehonored Thanksgiving tradition,
the drive provides holiday meals
for local families and charitable
organizations.
Last year, more than 150 complete Thanksgiving meals were
collected and boxed.
Volunteer students and parents
in collaboration with the guidance counselors, nurses, principals and teachers at Moorestown
public schools assemble the
meals. The meals include not
only the turkey and pie, but also

all the fixings, including gravy,

stuffing, cranberry sauce and
vegetables.
Frozen turkeys or breasts, up
to 15 pounds, and fresh pies will
be collected at three locations:
Maple Dawson Park across from
Baker school from 8:30 a.m. to 11
a.m.; William Allen Middle
School from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.;
and the Upper Elementary School
from 7:45 a.m. to noon. Please
consider donating, as the need
grows greater every year.

The township applied for compensation through the states

Spill Compensation Fund, which
provides financial assistance for
treatment and cleanup efforts, on
June 11. However, NJDEP denied
the application because the initial
sample was collected in May of
last year. Carew said they didnt
know it was too late at the time.
A municipality has 12 months
to apply for compensation from
the time of initial discovery. The
township didnt apply for the
funding immediately because
there was no immediate concern
over an unregulated contaminant
in the water.
Council is looking into various
ways of funding with the NJDEP,
though Chiacchio said he was
told the township could reapply
for the funding at the start of next
year.

Also, if the township finds the

source of the TCP in the water
supply, and there is someone responsible, it could potentially get
compensation from them, according to Township Solicitor Anthony Drollas.
Information on the water quality report and timeline, TCP and
more can be found on the townships
website
www.moorestown.nj.us.
In other news:
Due to the recent burglaries
around Moorestown, Carew suggested a town hall meeting be set
up to provide guidance to citizens
of the town. Council agreed this
was a good idea.
The township has been looking into improvements for its
website as well as the planning,
zoning and construction departments website. For the planning,
zoning and construction departments, the internal staff has been
looking at potential vendors for
new software to enable residents,
businesses and contractors to

apply for permits online. The departments are hoping that with
the new software, the information will move the inspections
more quickly and the paperwork
will flow more easily. Also, once
in the system, residents, businesses and contractors should be
able to track their permits online
and keep updated with the paperwork. As for the township website, a unanimous decision was
reached on a vendor by the
Telecommunications and Technology Committee.
Weve heard for a long time of
people having a hard time with
our website, that its difficult to
search. Thats an important service for our residents, to be able to
find information on our website,
Napolitano said.
Council must now approve the
contract for the website reconstruction.
The next township council
meeting will be Monday, Nov. 24 at
7:30 p.m. with the workshop starting at 7 p.m.

passed around by Community

House board members and staff.
Laurie Palko really has put a
lot of work into this event. It is
important to recognize all of
those groups and people who donated their services, said Brad
Kenney, executive director of the
Community House.
The event will culminate with
the lighting of a 20-foot Norway
spruce generously donated last
year by Pete Palko in honor of his
mother. The tree will once again
be decorated with beautiful lights
donated by Moorestown Hardware, with the labor to hang the
lights being donated by Hyperion
Tree Service.
The tree lighting, which will be
broadcast live around 6:15 p.m. on
Channel 3, will be followed by a
drive-by visit from Santa on a fire
truck. To learn more about the
Community
House,
visit
www.ourcommunityhouse.com.
The next exciting holiday event
is the Cooks Tour on Dec. 3 from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m., returning to
Moorestown after a years hiatus.
According to Rose McManus
Coleman, senior vice president of
the Virtua Foundation, after 50
years, the Virtua Memorial Auxiliaries, which organize the Cooks
Tour, needed to take a step back
and reevaluate how the tour was
run and put together. With the
help of many volunteers, the tour
is back.
We are thrilled that members
of the community stepped forward to take on the responsibility, Coleman said. Were grateful
for them doing this. It requires a
lot of work and does a lot of
good.
This marks the 51st year of the
Cooks Tour and will feature four

beautiful homes decorated for the

holiday season. This community
fundraiser will support renovations to the Oncology Infusion
Center at Virtua Memorial in Mt.
Holly.
The Cooks Tour was started in
1962 by the Curtis Auxiliary, an
all-volunteer organization founded by a group of Moorestown
women. It was named in honor of
Dr. Howard M. Curtis, a pediatrician at what is now known as Virtua Memorial.
Other than the gingerbread
cookies, seeing how different
folks decorate their homes and
how people celebrate is one of my
favorite parts, Coleman said. It
is great to see people come out to
help and experience these
homes.
Tickets are available online at
cookstour.ticketleap.com, at the
Community House and at participating Moorestown businesses.
Tickets are limited so be sure to
get them early. Interested volunteers can contact Virtua Foundation at (856) 355-0830.
The Moorestown Lions Clubs
54th Annual Holiday Parade on
Saturday, Dec. 6 is the next event
in Moorestown that celebrates
the holiday season. On a good
weather day, the parade can get
between 3,500 and 5,000 spectators. However, rain or shine, the
event shall go on.
Many of the people who come
to watch the parade were in it
themselves as children. It is a continuation thing to be able to see
what their own children are
doing and what they did. The remarks I get about the parade are
very positive. People really enjoy
it. It is one of the few events that
brings people together with no
agenda other than to have a good
time, said Peter R. Thorndike,
parade chairman.
The parade, which begins at
noon at the corner of Chester and
Central avenues, will be led by the

The Scot McGregor Bagpipes

Band and include performances
by string bands, the Moorestown
High School Band and the Liberty
Band. In addition, there will be
the town council, Boys Scouts
and Girls Scouts, marching units
and floats in the parade. The
theme of this year's parade is
Frozen. Cash prizes will be
awarded to the participants best
exemplifying the theme.
The parade begins at Central
and Chester avenues and travels
north to Main Street. It then travels south on Main Street until it
reaches Church Street and the reviewing stand where it will proceed south to Memorial Field.
Its a little bit of Americana
that still exists out there today,
Thorndike said.
The Moorestown Mall will also
be hosting a slew of holiday
events. There will be a Holiday
Digital Contest to win $1,000 starting Nov. 21 through Dec. 12; a
charity toy drive sponsored by
Moorestown Mall and Lourdes
Health System starting Friday,
Nov. 21 through Dec. 24; the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive
starting Nov. 28 through Dec. 24;
and Military Shopping Day on
Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Lets
not forget Santa will be available
for pictures and fun events, which
will continue until Dec. 24.
Also, holiday entertainment
from local schools will usher in
the holiday cheer with student
concerts for all shoppers in the
Macy's court in the Moorestown
Mall. Starting Dec. 8, the Riverton
School Choir will perform at 12:30
p.m., Dec. 9 M. Joan Pearson
School will perform at 11 a.m.,
Dec. 10 Walnut Street School will
perform at 11 a.m. and Dec. 13
The Bowman School of Dance
will perform at 5 p.m.

events, go to www.moorestownmall.com/holiday2014#happenings.
