HOMEROOM TEACHER COMMENTS

Carlin has worked inconsistently this semester. Some of his teachers, notably his Italian and Humanities teachers,
comment on a sound application coupled with excellent results. Unfortunately, there are also a number of teachers who
are remarking on a lack of focus in class, an inability to submit work by due dates, an apparent lack of preparation for
tests and assessments and a lack of input in class. There is no doubt that Carlin has the potential for far greater
achievements across all subjects, however, he needs to step up and put in required effort if this is to occur. He is a
friendly and polite member of the homeroom and I hope he cares enough about his learning to apply himself more
appropriately for the remainder of the year.
This semester Carlin has participated enthusiastically in the lunchtime sport program, has assisted his house in house
Tennis and has been a valuable member of the school Tennis and Basketball teams. He is also a member of the
Symphonic Band and Flute Ensemble. This semester Carlin volunteered for Friday night school and he is encouraged
to become more active in the range of Ignatian Service Programs offered. I look forward to working with Carlin for the
remainder of the year where I hope to see improved focus and commitment.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION / PERSONAL

DEVELOPMENT
ANNE SLINGO
This semester in RELIGIOUS EDUCATION / PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT:
Students studied the College theme 'A Faith that does Justice' in the light of Catholic teachings, exploring ways they
could take action for a more just world. In reflecting upon the meaning of Jesus life, death and resurrection, students
explored the profound significance of Jesus in their lives and the link between Lent and reconciliation. In examining
models of leadership, students identified key characteristics of leaders including Jesus, St Ignatius and St Paul. They
reflected with peers and year eleven students on storms in their lives, culminating with the Galilee retreat day. In a
study of the signs, symbols and rituals of the Catholic Church, students identified how these guide and enrich their
sacramental lives. The Personal Development Unit explored the theme of self and relationships.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlin exhibits a basic understanding of the concepts covered in Religious Education/Personal Development this
semester. His assessment results indicate a need for better preparation. He would benefit from maintaining focus in
class and engaging in discussions to gain a better understanding. Submitting work by its due date will be another focus
area for Carlin. It is difficult to tell whether he is engaged, as he rarely contributes to class discussions. His written
responses certainly exhibit the ability to reflect deeply. It is hoped that, as we move through the year, he will feel more
comfortable about taking part in class discussions as his journal entries show he has much to offer.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlin has participated quite well in Art this semester. He has demonstrated that he is interested in experimenting with
new materials and techniques. His work created in the Lino Print Unit was effective in concept and showed a good
application of tone with carving tools. Unfortunately, he did not work through the task with enough conviction, so he was
unable to experiment and explore the printing phase. He is encouraged to put in extra time where possible or move
more swiftly during class time in future tasks. Throughout the Technical Drawing Unit Carlin showed more confidence
and productiveness. He demonstrated drawing with precision and explored isometric techniques. His work may have
benefited from him taking more risks and adding more detail to his work. Carlin maintains a somewhat organized Visual
Diary which is ordered and well presented.

Carlin is a quiet and happy member of the Health and Physical Education class. He demonstrates ball skills that
continue to develop and he is encouraged to continue focusing in class to further improve these. Carlin participated well
in the Swimming program where he demonstrated competence with his strokes and water safety. He is encouraged to
work on his body position in the water to improve the efficiency of his strokes. Carlins fitness is well rounded and
continues to improve as the year progresses. In Health this semester we have looked at Fitness Components and Body
Systems, including the Muscular, Skeletal, Respiratory and Cardiovascular systems. Carlin has displayed a satisfactory
understanding of these. I look forward to working with him next semester.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlin has worked consistently in Humanities to develop his historical knowledge and research skills. He has strong
source analysis and research skills, applying them to a focus on life in Medieval Europe. His essay on the Black Death
was well researched and insightful. Carlin has consistently shown a pleasing application to tasks and would benefit
from demonstrating the ability to use primary and secondary source material more to support his contentions. While
examining Medieval Japan, he has used competent presentation skills to demonstrate his solid understanding of the
topic. He had difficulty recalling specific detail and demonstrate understanding of the subject matter under exam
conditions.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlin has a terrific attitude and has made great progress this semester. He is now playing with a beautifully pure,
lovely tone over the whole range of the flute and no longer struggles to play the notes of the high register. Carlin should
still try to take deeper and fewer breaths so that he can use more air to play loudly and in longer phrases. Carlin has
given some wonderful performances this semester on bass flute in the Flute Ensemble and as first flute in the
Symphonic Band. He is well on the way with his preparations for his Grade Three examination at the end of the year
and is gaining familiarity with his pieces and technical work. Carlin has attended most, but not all, lunchtime rehearsals
Flute Ensemble. However, his attendance at the morning Symphonic Band rehearsals needs to improve.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlin has made some progress this semester in Italian. He approaches lessons with increasing positivity and is able to
apply basic language skills in his written and spoken Italian. Carlin is a cooperative student who at times struggles with
the work, he therefore, needs be be proactive toward his studies by seeking clarification when unsure of work and by
participating in class activities. He also needs to regularly revise vocabulary, verbs and points of grammar covered in
class to be able to progress in all areas of the Italian language. Carlin produced an solid ICT assignment on La mia
famiglia.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlin has worked steadily and cooperatively in class but has struggled with the more challenging aspects of the work.
He has assimilated about fifty per cent of the course contents (vocabulary/grammar/translation) and is able to put those
into practice in a limited range of assessment tasks. He has performed consistently at an average level in translation
and other class exercises. His test results have been reasonable but better results would be achieved by more
frequent revision and a more consistent approach to home study requirements. I congratulate Carlin on his efforts to
date and I encourage him to maintain a positive attitude towards Latin.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlins approach to Mathematics this Semester seems to have been lackluster. He is a capable student but takes a
passive role in the lessons. After some interventions, most notably towards the end of the semester, Carlin did seem to
take more of an interest in the work and was completing most set tasks. Throughout the Algebra and Equations units
next semester, it is important Carlin pays careful attention during the lessons covering operations involving
pronumerals, especially those involving negatives, as he did find the Integers test at the start of the year challenging.
Carlin is encouraged to reflect on his start to Mathematics this semester and return to class with an enthusiastic and
open mind. I look forward to working with him next semester.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlins music literacy assessments reflect some fine skills and he is usually a cooperative member of the Music
classroom. Unfortunately his organisation and commitment to home learning have lacked the necessary effort. This has
hindered his ability to improve upon his current skills and has tarnished several of his grades. Carlin has so much to
offer in Music, and I encourage him to strive for his greatest effort in all activities next semester.

TEACHER'S COMMENTS
Carlin has shown an interest in Science this semester, though, I feel he is yet to put in his best effort. His understanding
of concepts has suffered due to this and if he is to achieve grades more reflective of his capabilities he must put in a
greater effort. Carlin is encouraged to take a more active role in the lessons by involving himself in class discussions
and asking questions where necessary. For his scientific reports, Carlin needs to conduct further research to
comprehensively link the results obtained with scientific concepts. Punctuality with work improved towards the end of
the semester, though, does still remain an issue. I hope that Carlin can spend time over the Term 2 holidays reflecting
on his start to Year 8 and returns with an improved application.
