Trout Named AL MVP

illvilles Mike
Trout finally has
been named the
American League MVP. The
strangest thing about that
statement is the Los Angeles
Angels outfielder is just 23
years old. Trout, who finished second in MVP voting
behind Detroits Miguel
Cabrera for each of the past
two seasons, was at home in
Millville with his family and
KeithAllisonPhoto.com
girlfriend when the
announcement was made on Thursday night. Trout is the
fifth-youngest player to be selected the leagues MVP and is
the youngest to be selected MVP unanimously by the
Baseball Writers Association voters. Statistically speaking,
hes been the best player in baseball for the past three years.
This season Trout led the American League in RBIs (with
111) while slugging 36 homers and hitting for a .287 average.
He also was tops in the AL in runs scored with 115.

Mud Run Nets $141K

Project Thanksgivings annual turkey

collection takes place this Saturday.
{ BY SHARON HARRIS-ZLOTNICK }
Members of the Barbara Cook Cancer Foundation,
Bottino family and representatives from Inspira
Health Network Foundation gather for the $141,000
check presentation ceremony from the proceeds of
Septembers Bill Bottino Mud Run.

n Thanksgiving Day, Americans have always

given thanks for their many blessings.
Community means helping our friends and
neighbors in need. Already residing in New Jersey's
poorest county, many more Cumberland County families face unemployment following the closures of
four Atlantic City casinos this year.
For the sixth year, Project Thanksgiving and the
Salvation Army will join forces to distribute turkeys
throughout Cumberland County, along with the
Atlantic County Salvation Army in Minotola. The
2014 Gloucester County turkey drive will support the
Food Bank of South Jersey.
Longtime friends Alex Kaganzev and Steve Plevins
will again steer the program. They have years of

he Barbara Cook Cancer Foundation

(BCCF) donated $141,000 to three area
cancer organizations during a check presentation ceremony at the Bottinos ShopRite
store in Vineland. The $141,000 amount puts the
BCCFs total donations throughout the six years
of holding annual events to over $600,000. The
Inspira Health Network Foundation, Kennedy
Cancer Care and LIVESTRONG are the organizations to receive this years annual donations.
BCCF President Robert Karan stated, We had
another very successful event and have raised
the quality bar yet again in holding the annual
Bill Bottino Mud Run. The mud run committee
members once again went way above and beyond
their call of duty to make sure the event was first
class. The hundreds of volunteers were outstanding, and they make the difference in holding such
a quality event. Of course, we cannot say enough
about the Bottino family and Bottinos ShopRite

Theres nothing like the goodies you

grew up with.

ears ago, on a visit back to

Michigan, my wife and I were
houseguests of my sister. When
we returned home, my wife suggested that we send her a nice basket of
fruit as a token of appreciation.
Sending her something would be okay,
I said, but suggested that fruit probably
wouldnt be the best idea.
Everybody likes fruit, my wife insisted, and so I bowed to her wishes.
Sure enough, a few weeks later we
received a thanks-but-no-thanks note from
my sister advising us that she has passed the
fruit basket along to the local senior center.
Any future fruit, she wrote, should be
covered in chocolate and then she went
on to admonish me because I should
have known better than to send something
healthy.
I mention that because I had another
scope at the doctors and have been cancer-free for eight months.
Just about this time a year ago, I discovered that the treatments and surgeries
werent working and more were planned.
It was going to be a rough patch
through the holidays.
A lot of people helped make that easier
but maybe none as much as my brother
and sister. This is the sister whoway
back in our childhoodonce didnt talk to
me for an entire year. When she told me, I
added insult to imagined injury, by
responding that I hadnt even noticed.
This is the brother who helped me
with financing when I first started my
newspaper but then twice almost sold it
out from underneath me.
This is the brother and sister who
looked after our mother through her years
of dementia when Dad insisted he could
handle it and that they stay in their home.
I visited once or twice a year.
When Mom passed, they did everything to make it easy for me. When Dad
fell and broke his hip and had to go to
rehab, then the hospital, then a nursing
home they were there every single day.
I was there at the very end.
The day after Dads funeral, they were
at the family home filling bags with family
treasures and setting them out by the curb
for pick-up.
I managed to grab a couple of things
but they were pretty insistent that every-

thing had to go.

That included me, because the next day
we were flying back to New Jersey and
they were left to negotiate life without
Mom or Dad.
We didnt go back for six years, spring
of last yeara month before I got my first
diagnosis. My wife and kids called and told
my brother and sister of my condition.
As kids, every Friday or Saturday night
was shopping night and wed all go to
Gratiot and Seven Mile (these were the
pre-mall days) to shop.
My brother and I each got a quarter
(my sister stayed with Mom) and we got
to explore the stores (both Kreskes and
Woolworths had dime stores where we
could spend our money). Montgomery
Wards was the big anchor store and
Robert Hall was the big clothes outlet.
When we finished shopping (we met at
8:30 under the big clock) and all went to
Sanders Ice Cream for hot fudge cream
puff sundaes.
Every week for years and years.
A week after my first surgery, I was sitting in the sun room (probably feeling
sorry for myself ) when a UPS van pulled
in the drive and delivered a box of goodies
from my brother and his wife.
It was a box of several assortments of
Sanders chocolates and a sample pack of
their different ice cream toppings.
Weeks later, I got a big box of assorted
pound packages of beef jerky that my
brother gets from a special store up near
his summer home.
Hed taken me there during our visit
that spring and Id expressed the opinion
that Id love to try some of their different
flavored jerky. He sent my six pounds of
different varieties, three different times.
My sister keeps sending me the different ice cream toppings because a little
bird told her I was losing weight.
Now theyre both recovering from surgeries (shoulder replacement for my
brother and womens ailments for sis) and
I really would like to send them something special from South Jersey but I just
cant think of what.
If you have any ideas Id really like to
hear them or theyll both end up with saltwater taffy. I

MUD RUN
Continued from cover
stores who continue to provide amazing
support of this event.
Melody Montgomery, Director of
Development for Inspira Health
Network Foundation stated, Inspira
Health Network is very grateful to the
Barbara Cook Cancer Foundation and
the Bottino ShopRite Mud Run for the
very generous support they have given to
us for cancer research over the last several years. Great strides have been made

in cancer research but there is still much

to do. Inspira Health Network partners
with Fox Chase Cancer Center in
Philadelphia in many clinical trials,
which is a major factor in finding the
cure for cancers. Your funds are used
wisely. Our teams enjoyed the day of
running, crawling and getting muddy for
such a great cause. We look forward to
how we can increase our support of your
activities in the future.
On behalf of Carolyn Heckman,
Executive Director of IHN Foundation,
Inspira Health Network, I want to again
thank you for your generous support in
helping us fight this dreaded disease.

Donald Fauerbach, New Jersey

Motorsports Park Corporate and
Community Affairs Officer commented,
On behalf of New Jersey Motorsports
Park, we are most pleased to participate
in such a valuable event in the fight
against cancer. This event includes participation from all ages and walks of life,
children to seniors, and it is so gratifying
to witness the enthusiasm and awareness of the overall need to do what we
do.... and that is to never give up the
fight!
Karan reported, The BCCFs mud
run committee has already met to discuss how we can keep improving this

event for 2015. Planning will begin in

earnest starting in early January.
For mud run updates and the
announcement of the 2015 date, visit
www.BarbaraCookCancerFoundation.org.
Bottinos ShopRite provided an initial
$125,000 donation to the BCCF from its
cancer fundraising efforts throughout
the past summer at their Millville,
Vineland, Upper Deerfield Township
and Washington Township stores,
respectively. Jim Bottino, President of
Bottino ShopRite Stores and brother of
Bill Bottino, Sr., also thanks the loyal
customers and vendors for their support
in this major fundraiser. I

"Dotties Hackbraten"
German Meatloaf

very once in a while on a Saturday I

am at loose ends and look for things
to do to fill up the day. A couple of
weeks ago I decided to take a ride to
Cowtown but got side-tracked on Garden
Road just as I crossed over Delsea Drive
when I spotted a sign for Weavers Farm
Market in Pittsgrove. I had never been there
and thought it would be worth a try. Well, I
found one of my favorite pumpkin pies in
South Jersey and a fabulous pecan pie to
boot! I also found Harveys Honey there, so I
didnt have to make the trek to Woodstown
for my supply. They had all kinds of apples
and other produce and it was a real treat.
The market is run by a Mennonite family
and they were absolutely charming. They
are open until the end of the year, Thursdays
to Saturdays.... I also found another favorite
pumpkin pie at Bergamos Market on
Chestnut Avenue in Vineland, and as usual,
Saralynn is baking up all kinds of goodies for
the holidays. I tried her chocolate chipcranberry shortbread cookies and they were
just incredible! Had them with a cup of tea
when I got home and they hit the spot!
I am looking forward to turkey for
Thanksgiving, but after November 27, that
will be it for the year.
Turkey only tastes good to me with gravy
and stuffing. I like to try different meatloaf
recipes during the holidays and they make a
nice change from the usual fare. Here is the
recipe for German Meatloaf from Mickey and
Minnies on Route 30 in Cologne. Linda and I
stopped off there for Oktoberfest and as usual
the food was fabulous. Add it to your holiday
table or save it for a winters night. Makes
enough to have for leftovers the next day!

1 pound ground beef

1 pound ground veal
1 pound ground pork
1 cup red onions, finely diced
4 eggs
6 slices marble Jewish rye bread
2 cups Oktoberfest Beer, or Becks
2 tbsp coarse stone ground mustard
2 tsp celery seed
2 tsp caraway seed
1 whole dill pickle, finely chopped
1/4 cup cooked diced bacon
2 shallots, finely diced
1 tsp salt
2 tsp black pepper
2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
8 slices bacon, uncooked for the top
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Soak the
marble bread in the beer. Finely chop the
onion, shallots and pickle. Mix in with the
ground meat, then add eggs, beer-soaked
marble bread and all additional seasonings.
Transfer meatloaf mixture to baking
pan. Top with the sliced bacon, cover with
foil and bake for about 45 minutes. Remove
foil and continue to cook until the bacon is
crisp and meatloaf is cooked through, about
20 minutes. I

named its Members of the Month for
September 2014. They are Joe
Dietterick and Tynieka DeShields from
the Carl Arthur Recreation Center
unit; and Ruth del-Villar and Conrad
Jackson from the Cunningham School
unit. All of these Club members have
shown progress in attendance, participation and an overall positive attitude.

Jacob Crouthamel, 14, of

Franklinville, was honored by the YMCA
of Vineland as its Volunteer of the Year.
He received the prize at the annual
awards dinner of all of the states
YMCAs, with an audience of hundreds,
held recently in central New Jersey.
Crouthamel primarily helps with the
YMCAs Youth Sports program, which is
directed by his father, Bob Crouthamel,
the organizations Healthy Living director. The proud father said of his son,
Jacob really understands the meaning
of volunteering and the importance of
being a positive example to the younger
kids. Jacob serves as a mentor to these
children, who range from age 2 to 8. The
parents have lots of praise for him.

Since 1991, as part of the Deerfield Township

Harvest Festival, the Township Committee and
Recreation Committee have recognized a local
farmer of the year. This years 36th celebration
recognized Ned and Doris Morgan, owners of
Neds Honey LLC, as its farmers of the year.
They join a long list of local farmers who
have been honored over the years. Mayor John
Stanzione presented Ned Morgan a plaque at
the festival on October 11. Morgan was accompanied by his son, Ryan and stepdaughter,
Nicole Ashmen. His wife Doris was unable to
attend because she was being honored by
Rutgers for being named the 2014 Rutgers Master Gardeners of Cumberland.
Neds Honey LLC is a honeybee apiary owned by Ned and Doris Morgan. They
specialize in harvesting raw seasonal honey, typically spring and summer, from
their hives. The Morgans also provide bees for pollination. Both are leaders of the
Cumberland County 4-H WannaBees beekeeping club.
Due to the cancellation of this year's harvest festival parade, because of the
weather, Morgan and his wife have been invited to participate in next years parade.

CC TEC Student-Built Houses

To Be Part of Bridgeton Park
Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kellys efforts
to develop City Park into a regional destination got a big lift recently when officials
at the Cumberland County Technical
Education Center agreed to donate two student-built houses that will be used in
Bridgeton City Park.

According to Kelly, one of the two single-story modular structures will be used to
increase capacity at the All Sports Museum
of Southern New Jersey while the location
and use of the second structure is still
being discussed.
With the decision to donate the structures, City officials are now working out
the logistics to move both structures and
make them ready for use once they are in
place. The hope is to make them operational by the end of 2015.
According to Kelly, the gift from CCTEC
provides Bridgeton with a number of
options and several possibilities will be
considered as part of the process that has
been ongoing with stakeholders and con-

sultant firms working with City officials to

enhance the park.

Tinas Fund for Domestic Violence

Awareness needs your assistance in providing a play space for the children living
at Center For Family Services Services
Empowering Rights of Victims Safe
House.
Imagine, if you can, your very own child,
grandchild, niece or nephew being displaced from their home because of a violent relationship. Through no fault of their
own, they are forced to leave their home,
often with just the clothes on their backs.
SERV provides a safe home for mothers
and their children who have been displaced
because of domestic violence; providing
them with the comforts of home and setting them on track to start a new, independent life.
While the safe house is able to provide
basic needs to families, financial constraints make it difficult to provide extra
resources and activities. Tinas Fund is
stepping in to put fun back into these childrens lives by providing a play yard. They
are looking into providing a brand new
swing set, jungle gym, and other related
outdoor equipment for the hundreds of
boys and girls who pass through SERVs
Safe House each year.
Checks can be made out directly to
Tinas Find for Domestic Violence
Awareness through Colonial Bank, 2745 S.
Delsea Drive, Vineland, NJ 08360. Mark
on your check that it is for the Playground
Fund. Tinas Fund thanks you for your
ongoing support of the work they do in the
community. Contact Myrna at 609-721-3078
if you have questions.

Project Thanksgiving to Aid

Former Casino Workers
Four casinos recently closed in
Atlantic City, affecting the livelihoods of
numerous hard working employees.
Many of these families live in
Cumberland County. During a meeting

to provide support to local families
through Project Thanksgiving. Families
affected by the casino closures are invited to contact Major Miguel Barriera at
the Vineland Salvation Army and sign up
for a free Thanksgiving turkey and
amenities. Offers are limited. Call 856696-5050. I

We all want to help our friends and

family whenever we can, and weve
been taught to share since we were
children. So it may seem like the
right thing to do when an aunt gives
her nephew a Xanax at his wedding
to relax his pre-nuptial jitters, a father
gives his adult daughter one of his
prescription painkillers to help her get
over a head-splitting migraine, or a
wife gives her husband one of her
sleeping pills so hell be well rested
for his interview the next morning.
Unfortunately, all of these people are
putting their loved ones at risk by
sharing their meds. Prescription medications are powerful drugs that carry
serious side effects and often the
potential for addiction, which is why
they can only be obtained after a doctor has examined you and determined
that their benefits outweigh their
risks. The dangers of taking someone
elses Rx medicine can be present
with the first dose.
One of the biggest risks involved
with sharing your Rx medications is
the danger of drug interactions.
According to drugs.com, there are 739
medications that have a moderate to
severe interaction with Xanax, 744 for
codeine (a common Rx painkiller), and
665 for Ambien (a commonly prescribed sleeping pill). In addition, all
of these also react dangerously with
alcohol. These reactions range from
greatly increasing the effect of the
drugs, making it easier to overdose, to
causing disorientation and confusion,
to causing liver and kidney damage.
Giving a jittery groom a Xanax to calm
him down might lead to him passing
out at the reception if he has a few
drinks, or disoriented and stumbling
during the ceremony if he is on certain anti-depressants.
Different medical conditions,
including age, sex and weight, also
determine how a particular dose of a
drug will affect a patient, and how
severely they will experience its negative side effects. In general, 15mg of
codeine is going to affect a 25-yearold 190-pound man less than it would
his 75-year-old, 105-pound grandmother, but depending on his medical
conditions and other medication he is
taking (including over the counter),
that isnt always the case. Also, the
risk of addiction is greatly increased in
people potentially pre-disposed to
addiction (such as those in recovery
or those with a family history of addiction), and for people who are given to
high a dose (and those likely to get
high on it).
For more about how you can
become involved in local efforts to prevent Rx abuse, visit SWCcoalitions.org
Michael Regenelli, Project
Coordinator, Cumberland County
Healthy Communities Coalition

4-H Agent Julie Karavan. Serving as a

volunteer is a rewarding experience as
well as an investment in the young people
of Cumberland County. We welcome
adults of any age to offer their time and
talent.
Cumberland County is home to one of

TROUT
Continued from cover
One of the most significant advanced
statistical measures considered by many of
the voters is Wins Above Replacement
(WAR) and Trout bested all AL position
players this year with a WAR of 7.9.
Drafted 25th overall by the Los Angeles
Angels in 2009, the Millville Senior High
School grad has quickly amassed a reputation among baseball analysts as one of the
best all-around players to ever play the game.
Trout was the 2012 American League
Rookie of the Year, has made three all-star
teams in three full seasons, and finished
second to Detroits Miguel Cabrera the last
two years for American League MVP. He
signed a six-year contract extension in
March of 2014 that will pay him an average
of $24.1 million per year.
Those in the game will tell you about his
speed and his power. Theyll rave about his
cannon of an arm, and tell you hes one of
the most incandescent young talents
theyve ever encountered. Hes a five-tool
player in every sense of the word. There are
claims that Trouts talents are reminiscent
of another well-known, blonde-haired,
blue-eyed centerfielder by the name of
Mickey Mantle. The praise comes in heaps.
It is not all empty buzz, however. The

KeithAllisonPhoto.com

impetus for such lofty comparisons is

Trouts play on the field. But with the accolades come raised expectations. The comparison to Mickey Mantle is probably an
unfair weight to put on the shoulders of a
21-year-old, but it exists nonetheless, and it
places pressure on Trout to perform. Its
the kind of pressure that could make a lesser
man crumble.
This is where Trout breaks away from
the mold. He exudes confidence and composure. When asked about the expectations

surrounding him, Trout is able to brush the

question aside with the aplomb of a man
many years his senior.
What people say about me, its great.
Its humbling, said Trout during a 2012
phone call to The Grapevine. But when
you get out there on the field, you just have
to go out and play, and do the things youve
been doing since you were a kid. You have
to leave that stuff behind you, have some
fun, and focus on playing.
Trout seems to be able to adopt tunnel
vision when it comes to blocking out what
people are saying about him. In the game,
this type of thing is whats known as an
intangiblesomething a player possesses
naturally and cant be taught. His wealth of
baseball knowledge is another intangible.
These intangibles, more than his incredible talent, are why the Angels have locked
him up for the next six seasons and why
they drafted him in the first place.
Trouts future in Major League Baseball
is full of seemingly unlimited potential.
One thing is for certain, he will always
have the support of his hometown of
Millville and the entire South Jersey area,
as evidenced by the attendance at Trouts
first professional game at Citizens Bank
Park when the Angels visited the Phillies
on May 13, 2014. Some 6,000 fans from
Millville and the surrounding area showed
up to cheer him on. I

War on Black Rot

Vineland played a key role in developing a weapon
against diseases affecting the countrys grape crops.

n 1886, the United States declared

war on black rot, the fungus that had
already destroyed the majority of the
countrys grape crops for nearly two
decades, by creating the Section of
Mycology within the U.S. Department of
Agricultures (USDA) Division of Botany.
Vineland was one of the locations that had
suffered considerably, robbed of its main
crop and taunted by treatments that promised more than they delivered. Over the
next two years, the town would play a key
role in developing a reliable weapon against
the disease.
With Frank Lamson-Scribner as the
head of the new governmental section, the
search for a solution to grape rot took a significant turn. Two circulars were immediately released, one promoting the use of the
Bordeaux mixture, a combination of copper
sulfur and lime developed by French scientist Pierre Marie Alexis Millardet and the
second explaining the two most destructive

forms of fungi, downy mildew and black

rot. Farmers were asked to report if they
had witnessed either form and explain how
much loss they had experienced from each.
The results would provide the government
with knowledge of the various climates in
which the diseases had appeared, which
growers were more susceptible to the
forms and what remedies, if any, had been
attempted along with the success rate.
According to Treatment of Grape
Diseases: The Science and Successes of Frank
Lamson-Scribner, the responses determined
that east of the Rocky Mountains, the annual loss of grape crops had been 40 percent.
Scribner combined the results of the information culled from circular responses with
other studies published by both American
and European scientists to produce several
publications in the last half of 1886. But he
knew that the testing of fungicides was necessary if a cure was to be discovered.
When the Section of Mycology was

enlarged and rechristened the Section of

Vegetable Pathology in 1887, Scribner had a
higher budget and a larger staff with which
to conduct the field work necessary to test
the various copper compounds believed to
be the answer to treating mildew and rot.
Scribner began examining the type of
spraying equipment necessary in treating
crops and he questioned the time of year
treatments should begin. But he was aware
that the answers to these questions would
lie in the results of the field tests that need
to be conducted. The problem was that
there were no farms prepared to conduct
the rigorous experiments required.
Treatment of Grape Diseases explains
that, in order to obtain the necessary
results in a thorough and reliable way, the
United States Department of Agricultural
established several special stations in 1887
for the purpose of more controlled experimentation during the summer of that year.
Scribner chose vineyards in Charlottesville,
Virginia; Vineland, New Jersey; Neosho,
Missouri; and Denison, Texasregions
hard hit by both black rot and downy
mildewand designated their owners
USDA special agents with the duty of testing copper salts as remedies. To guarantee
consistency, the Department supplied the
special agents with the chemicals and

equipment for conducting the field tests.

Early on, the 1887 testing affirmed the
Bordeaux mixture and another combination, Eau Celeste, effective in the treatment
of downy mildew, but the program began
showing mixed results. Scribner still
found it difficult to make scientific pronouncements on fungicides with confidence. He saw the use of copper salts as a
preventative that needed to be applied
early and continuously before the germination of spores and the onset of wet weather
but, during the tests, farmers and special
agents began treating the grapes only after
the first sign of infection appeared.
Mistakes like these meant that Scribner
had to wait until the 1888 season to resume
experiments. Not content to spend the
remainder of the summer idly, Scribner
undertook further research on the topic of
grape rot. He was particularly interested in
the recent work of French scientist Pierre
Viala of the Ecole Nationale DAgriculture
at Monpellier, France. It so happened that
Professor Viala was visiting the United
States in the summer of 1887 on what was
deemed a mission for the French Ministry
of Agriculture. Before the seasons end,
Scribner and Viala would visit Vineland
together. I

ast week, I highlighted some businesses that opened in Landis

MarketPlace within the last few
months. I now want to highlight some
businesses that opened up a little earlier,
but which havent been mentioned yet in
this column. All are on the upper level.
Make sure to check them out.
Knitting by Mary has been part of the
Market since November 2012 and has
grown into a permanent business there.
Owner Mary Sutak is a retired registered
nurse who has enjoyed knitting for some
time. She wanted to do something more
with it than just as a hobby, so she turned
it into a business. She sells yarn and knitting supplies, such as needles and continues to knit on order special items for customers. Specialties on hand are handmade
crocheted top towels, crocheted and knitted kitchen items, and quilted items, such
as baby throws, wall hangings, and placemats. She also teaches knitting through
the Millville Stitchers. For more information, call her at 609-774-3588 or e-mail
her at MSutak452@aol.com.
So Get Real opened in October of last
year. Fran Reilly owns the business, which
features handcrafted ceramics and jewelry, chocolate-covered dried fruit candy,
and chewy sugarfree candy, as well as

61st Wedding Anniversary

Congratulations to Tony and Dee Campanella as
they celebrate their 61 wedding anniversary. Mayor
Campanella and his wife, Dolores, were married on
November 3, 1953 in Elkton, Maryland. The couple
has been an inspiration to their family and friends
as they have shared this journey, one that may not
have always been easy but has always been worth
it. Tony and Dee have celebrated the ups, weathered the downs and rolled with everything in
between. And they always put family first!
Congratulations, Mom and Dad,
We could not be more proud to be your children. God blessed us and we thank heaven every day for both of you. Maybe the secret really is to be deaf in one ear and blind
in one eye!
We Love you both, The kids, the grandkids and the great-grand kids

The Rotary Club of Vineland is bucking the trend

of dwindling membership rolls plaguing service clubs
nationwide. At its September 16 membership luncheon, held at the Ramada of Vineland, new member
Renuka Thakur was installed, bringing the clubs
membership to 91 strong. The Vineland Club is the
second oldest and second largest in Rotary District
7640 (southern New Jersey).
Thakur was sponsored for membership in Rotary
by Melanie Druziako. Thakur is an occupational therapist employed by Genesis
Healthcare. She studied in India and worked in Ohio before coming to Vineland.
Thakur and her husband, Yogesh, are active in the local Indian community. They
have two children, a daughter and a son, both of whom are also involved in community endeavors inside and outside of school.
As is a Rotary Club custom, soon after being inducted into the club, new members are given the opportunity to give a classification speech, to tell club members a little bit about themselves. During her classification speech at the Rotary
Club luncheon on October 14, Thakur showed a short video that explained the work
of occupational therapists helping patients to lead normal lives despite challenges.

St. Augustine Preparatory School announces that seven seniors have been
named to the prestigious National Honor Society (NHS). While most schools qualify their students with an 85 average, Prep students qualify after their first semester
of junior year with a weighted cumulative average of 93. These seven students join
the 60 Prep students who were inducted in the spring.
Those inducted into the National Honor Society include George Steffa, of Sea
Isle City; John W. OBrien, of Ocean City; Robert Fralinger, of Bridgeton; Kyle
DeMatte, of Sewell; Sean Carew, of Northfield; Steve Alvarez and Daniel Alvarez
both of Mays Landing.
The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to
recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS
serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of
scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been
associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

experience working with disadvantaged

populations within the state government.
In 2009, Kaganzev and Plevins decided to
duplicate a Philadelphia food drive program
by launching Project Thanksgiving. Valued
at $20 per turkey, Project Thanksgiving has
since helped thousands of needy families.
We are thrilled with the success of this
turkey distribution program. Totals have
increased each year. In 2009, we provided
330 turkeys; that number grew to 550 in
2010 and to 728 in 2011. Our 2012 total was
1,184, and last year we awarded a record
1,318 turkeys. Our goal is always 1,000 across
the three counties, and we hope to achieve
at least that once again, says Kaganzev.
After developing their original plan,
Kaganzev and Plevins sought sponsorships.
Plevins states, Once we had created the
programs blueprint, we secured sponsorship from Maria Bottino, owner of three
local ShopRite supermarkets.
This year, Project Thanksgivings additional sponsors are the Vineland
Construction Co., Susquehanna Bank,
Newfield Bank, PNC Bank and Cruisin
92.1FM WVLT radio.
These sponsors have generously offered
their time, donations and employees to our
cause. We appreciate all they do at this time
of the year, Plevins says.
For 2014, 10 collection location sites will be
available for both turkeys and monetary donations across the three counties. Cumberland
County venues include the Bottino family's
three ShopRite locationsWest Landis
Avenue in Vineland, Millville and Bridgeton.
Additional Cumberland County locations
are the Landis Marketplace (the Amish
Market), the Sun Valley Pools/Fan Zone
headquarters facility at Sherman Avenue
and Southwest Boulevard in Vineland and
the ShopRite at Lincoln and Landis avenues.
In Gloucester County, the Bottinos will
also provide a collection center at their
Sewell, store. The Ammons family, also
ShopRite owners, invites collections be
made at their Mullica Hill store.
Once again, Project Thanksgiving will partner with the Venice Italian Eatery in Pitman.
The restaurant will cook free Thanksgiving
meals for veterans families, exchanging
Project Thanksgiving boneless turkey and
pies for the same value in whole turkeys.
In Atlantic County, the Food Pantry dropoff site is at the Louise Basile Community
Center in Minotola. Myrna Keller, volunteer
coordinator for the Southeast Region, will
oversee any collections and distributions.
She says, We were so successful last year
that we eagerly anticipate continued community involvement. We already have 50
applications and want to award 75 turkeys
for the holiday. If we do not reach that goal,
the Vineland Salvation Army office will provide assistance.
Saturday, November 22, is the campaigns
key promotional date. Cruisin 92.1FM will

broadcast live from the Venice Italian Eatery

and three of their DJs will spin records at
satellite drop-off centers.
DJ Al Snyder will appear at the Sewell
ShopRite from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; DJ Joe
Gorgo will spin music at the Lincoln
ShopRite from 12 noon to 4 p.m. and DJ
Pepper Paul will play music at the Landis
Marketplace from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Several local celebrities will also make
guest appearances. Look for Miss Vineland
Angela Doulis; Miss Cumberland County
Kellie Santoro; Miss Gloucester County's
Outstanding Teen, Amanda Peacock; Miss
South Jersey Kelcie Klaus and Miss West
Deptford Julia Magill.
All five will travel to the drop-off locations throughout the day. Nigel, the finefeathered turkey mascot will travel with
Miss Vineland all day, making his first stop
at the Landis ShopRite at 11 a.m. Their
schedules include:
Miss Vineland: Lincoln Ave. Shop Rite
(10 a.m.-10:30 a.m.); Landis ShopRite

Eatery- 11 a.m.1 p.m.
Prospective recipients should contact
their local Salvation Army chapter and complete an application. Majors Miguel and
America Barriera in Vineland/Millville and
Lieutenants Sergo and Edelyne Lalanne of
Bridgeton lead the local branches.
For years, Kaganzev and Plevins have trusted these organizations, knowing their low
overhead means more funding for the cause.
The Atlantic City casino closures have
left hundreds of Cumberland and Gloucester
County residents without work. This year,
the Vineland Salvation Army has prioritized
these families by designating a limited number of turkey baskets for them.
To contribute, bring a turkey, supermarket certificate or donation to the above-listed locations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Saturday, November 22. Each Cumberland
and Atlantic County location will have a
Salvation Army collection table. Gloucester
County locations will all have a Food Bank
of South Jersey table. Trademark red kettles
will also accept individual donations of cash
or checks at Cumberland County sites.
Label the turkeys as Project
Thanksgiving contributions. The
Vineland/Millville Salvation Army center
has freezers in its building, and is also
accepting daily donations from Monday
through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 733 E.
Chestnut Ave. in Vineland.

Christian School, 1100 W. Sherman Ave.,

Vineland. Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday 2 and 7
p.m. Performance by Crusader Players, middle and high school students at Cumberland
Christian School as cast and crew. Deanna
Cavallo is the director, accompanied by Kim
Brown as assistant director and set director,
with Alisha Carr as Student Director. Free to
the community. Refreshments at the drama caf. 856-696-1600 ww.cccrusader.org
Set in the early 1900s, this play brings to life the charming, heartwarming story
of a Kansas farmer, Jacob Witting, a widower with two children; Anna and Caleb,
who places an ad in the newspapers seeking a wife. He receives a letter from a
Sarah Wheaton of Maine who says she will visit the family for a month to see how
things work out. "I will come by train. I will wear a yellow bonnet. I am plain and
tall." Narrated by Anna reminiscing on the eve of her wedding, the story unfolds in
a fascinating flashback on that often exciting, sometimes tumultuous month when
Sarah and the Wittings came to know one another and learned a few things about
themselves as well. The joys and challenges of everyday life are richly depicted in
this classic, written by Joseph Robinette.

Theatre will feature American Sign
Language (ASL) interpreters, who will
convey the musicals dialogue and
lyrics from beside the stage for the
benefit of hearing-impaired audience
members.
We are excited to welcome these
interpreters to our production and to
offer their services to an important part
of our community, said OBSP Board
President David Halter. It is a pleasure
to make this Broadway classic available for an even wider audience.
Based on Charles Dickens literary
classic Oliver Twist, Oliver! is a threetime Tony Award winner chronicling a
young orphans quest for family and a
loving home on the dangerous streets
of Victorian London. The show features 16 of Broadways most wellknown tunes, including Food,
Glorious Food, Where Is Love?, Id
Do Anything, Oom-Pah-Pah, and
As Long as He Needs Me.
The ASL interpreted performance
will be held Saturday, November 22,
at 8 p.m. Other performances are
November 20, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday,
November 21, at 8 p.m.; and Sunday,
November 23, at 3 p.m.
For more information on the group,
visit www.obsp.org; for tickets, go to
www.levoy.net.
