Essay2:
Please write an essay on a technical project you took part in, or on a piece of research you undertook,
where your contribution and involvement was key to its success. When writing your essay, please
remember that the CS professional reviewing your application may not share the same technical expertise
or knowledge of your particular research field. Please make sure to explain all technical terms and
processes accordingly. Your essay should include the following sections: The problem your project or
research is trying to solve, the solution that was chosen, the technical challenges you faced, your
contribution to the success of the project and why you consider this project successful or innovative or
both. (400-600 words)
Note: Treat this essay as a technical report or research paper. Feel free to use tables, references, or
figures

In 2012 I joined a technical project to help the downs syndrome children to persevere better in
the society and especially in the education.

First of all what is a child with down syndrome?

It is an attend child of the chromosome disease, that shows itself from the birth by a
characteristic face then a mental and psychomotor retardation. There are various types of down
syndrome (called also trisomy) trisomy 9, 13, 18. Most known and most wide-spread are the
trisomy 21..
We thought of several methods which could help these children and I was volunteered to do
some researches and visit the school which shelters these children to collect more informations.

The collaboration of the professors and some informations on the Internet allowed me to
understand well these children and to find in a way a small solution to their problems.
Generally speaking the children affected by trisomy 21 develop slowly their knowledge and it is
very difficult to them to learn in a group. They have to learn only in a personalized way, because
they are lacking concentration, they amuse as soon as they see the others.

Thats why I have found ideal to design conceive a software of attractive learning because they

lose concentration easily, but also repetitive learning because they forget a lot and amusing
because they get tired fast and refuse to think too much.
All the members of my group have found this idea very excellent brilliant and congratulated me
for my good researches.

So we proceeded to the elaboration of the general architecture of the software and every
member of the group proposed an educational game which could enrich this application.
Thus the selected games are:
- Game of alphabets
- Game of number

- Game of Good Choice

We had very well started but however some in the group were not very competent in computing
thus the work moves forward very slowly.

We had thought a lot about colors and images to be used in this software to make so that these
children take some pleasure to work with while having fun.
For it, I paid again a visit to the children handicapped to test with a game of flag the colors which
they preferred and also which kind of games they like.
I am going to explain in detail the functioning of a game which we have developed. Let us take
the example of the game of alphabet:
Game of alphabet:

Graphical interface of the game of alphabet

If the child clicks the button lecture a window appears with the sound
Example: the letter A

The image of ear allows the child to re-hear the letter. This method of repetition allows the child
mental defective to memorize letters easily.

If the child clicks the button ecriture, a window appears which contains the stages which we
followed to write a letter.
And finally when he clicks the button exemple a window appears with the image of a word
beginning with the selected letter. This function allows improving the vocabulary of the children,
by using the images to draw their attention. Because it is necessary to grant to them the novelty
so that they are not bored and so that they are always motivated
Example: the letter B

All other games were designed conceived with the same principle and with many colors and
images.
When the work was ended the tests were made with the children handicapped from the school
which I had visited.
They approached most of the games without any trouble and they easily understood the
principle of functioning of the software to move from a game to another one

They met some problems during the game of alphabet, because they did not recognize small
letters, thus we had to put redo all the letters in capital letters.
Otherwise the professors congratulated us a lot and encouraged to make even more often this
kind of product because there is almost no software of games for children mentally
handicapped.

Moreover these children are very untidy in the world thus we have to help the professors and
parents to improve the education of these children to be able to integrate them into the society.
My group was satisfied with the made work and congratulated me a lot on researches and on
the idea to create this software and had not even imagined the greatness of the success of this
innovative work!!!

Last year we had to study the HTML language, it was a very interesting interressant module which
allowed us to understand many things in IT programs.
During the module we had to form groups which had to work on various projects
I was chosen as project manager and our project concerned a website which we had to create and which
had to make the biography presentation of one of the candidates of the group
I began first of all to define working rules and after I developed a working plan and then I divided the
work to the various members of my group

They were so satisfied and the only thing which had most made me joyful is the fact that they told me all
that I am the best project manager that they never knew.
Afterward I had to join another group of work during the marketing course module, It was a presentation
on the behavior of a consumer.
It was easier to work in this presentation because we were only 3 in the group, one boy and two girls.
The teacher named that boy the team leader because she said that boys are more adapted to manage a
group work and I was sure that at the end I will let her change her idea about girls.
We have done like previous we developed a working plan and we divided the work for three.
I was always giving advices and appointments to work, I have amazed our team leader and he was happy
to see that I was very interested about our presentation he even said that he never gave so much
importance to a group work and that I was pushing them to work harder.
When we have finished our presentation we introduced her to the class and the professor requested to
speak to the team leader and I was designated to go to answer her because my group found on me the
the best person the best chosen to represent this postem.
My teacher encouraged me and said that from now on she will encourage girls to be like me!
I was very satisfied and I would like to be always like that even in the environment of professional work.

Dr. Anita Borg proposed the "50/50 by 2020" initiative, so that women earning computing degrees would
be 50% of the graduates by year 2020. The percentage of Computer Science degrees earned by women,
however, is still far from 50% in most countries. Please write a 600-1000 word essay which includes the
following sections:

In my university the percentage of girls studying computer science is very poor

Formatted: Strong, Font: 11 pt, French

(France)

They often start in computer science sector but finally they turn their choices to business, management
or even marketing
They are not very interested in computer science like men, they judged it very difficult to learn languages
like HTML/CSS or JAVA.
Sometimes some aspects about computing may discourage girls.
One of the biggest turn-offs is the "geek factor". Girls often envisage a career in computing as a lifetime in
an isolated cubicle writing code. The "geek factor" affects both male and female students, but it seems to
have more of a negative effect on the female students.

Many associations like JIGUEEN TECH (jigueen means girls in wolof) and different other associations used
to come to our university to give conferences and motivations for girls to let them attend computer
classes or to select technical degrees.
One month ago, there were also The national day of the girls in information technologies organized to
share leaders women's testimonies in the sector of ICTS (INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
TECHNOLOGIES) with the aim of Motivate the girls.
This was also organized to make sensitive the decision-makers, the members of Parliament, the partners
in the development and Civil society on the impact of the strengthening of the digital culture at the girls
in the economic and social development
The computing is a branch always in evolution and which asks for a big availability, the programming
languages require a profound learning, and there is always new technologies which we have to know to
better advance in this domain.
The girls in general look for jobs which could get them enough time for their social life because we dont
have to forget that girls will become mothers and mothers are the persons who generally have no spare
time.
The girls generally like leaders' jobs, jobs where there is activity, they like meeting challenges and do not
like remaining on-the-spot. They consider the IT as too passive and would not like to spend their life in
front of a screen to enter codes or to create programs.
Such are the facts held by certain students and which justify their choice turned to jobs other than the
computing.
If I were the Head of the Computer Science department at my university, I would take many initiatives to
reverse the trend and to increase the involvement of women in Computer Science.
I will choose to stimulate my students by proposing them a new approach of the computing, this by
setting up computing courses particularly playful.
The objective? Make discover the subject in a funny way.
We can connect with girls by making technology appealing and useful in their lives.
Girls adore their cell phones and iPods. So courses in digital photography and recording are the logical
first steps. Then stimulate their interest in Web design and video production. After they will see that the
possibilities are virtually limitless.
I can also create days especially dedicated to girls and in whom I shall invite many women in the field of
the computing who can make not ennuyants speeches on their IT career but rather to create the direct
contact between the students and them.
indeed , some games can be created with as purpose to offer to the winners free computer courses or
computers for example. Similar days will have to incite all the girls to attend it and so I shall have create in
them the spark which can maybe urge them to become leaders in the field of the computing

The girls have a vision of the world different from that of the boys, they have many magic ideas which
could be useful in the IT domain and which could also transform the world.
Indeed technology companies say they want more women because diverse teams often do a better job of
solving problems and creating things.
Then we need diversity in IT domain, Gender diversity has been suggested to give benefits such as better
decision making, increased creativity, and enhanced, innovative performances.
Girls are an untapped source of talent, We have to forge their talent, bring them to discover what they
really are.
