A crane hook whose horizontal cross section is trapezium, 50mm wide at the
inner side, 25mm wide at the outer side and 50mm thick, carries a load of 10 kN
whose line of action is 60 mm from the inside edge of the section. The centre of
curvature is 50 mm from the inside edge. Calculate the maximum tensile and
compressive stresses developed in the hook material.

Explain elastic membrane analogy with regard to torsion of non-circular shafts.

A thin walled box section has two compartments. Each compartment is
120 mm 120 mm measured from centre line to centre line and has uniform
thickness of 12mm throughout. What is the allowable torque if the maximum
shear stress is not to exceed 30N/mm2? What will be the angular twist per meter
length? Take G=82 kN/mm2.

A thin uniform steel disc of radius 28 cm is rotating about its axis at 3200 r.p.m.
Draw the radial and circumferential stress distribution diagram along the radius of
the disc. What are the maximum and minimum values of circumferential and
radial stresses.
= 0.078 N/cm3, Poissons ratio = 0.3 and g = 9.81 m/sec2.

A plate made of mild steel has a thickness h = 12 mm and covers a circular

opening having a diameter of 200 mm. The plate is fixed at the edges and is
subjected to a uniform pressure p. Determine the magnitude of the yield
pressure and deflection at the centre of the plate. For mild steel take E = 210 GPa,
=0.28, Yield stress = 320 GPa.

Q6

A steel I-beam (E=200 GPa) has a depth of 102 mm, width of 68 mm, moment of
inertia of Ix=2.53x106 mm4, and length of 3.8m. It is attached to a rubber
foundation for which k0=0.350 N/mm3. A concentrated load P=32 kN is applied at
one end of the beam. Determine the maximum deflection, maximum flexural
stress in the beam, and the location of each.
