President: The snow is flying – a good sign that another busy season is in full swing.
Don Herman I hope you are all in game shape and ready to referee!
president@cboa.ca

Vice-President: I would like to thank everybody for their patience and cooperation with the
Rod Davidson delay in writing the exam. The electronic filing has gone extremely well,
vicepresident@cboa.ca
and it looks like everybody will write it on time.
Past President:
Fino Tiberi The Rookie Clinics added another twenty or so members to our
pastpresident@cboa.ca
association, and this year’s crop seems very keen. Thanks to John and
Treasurer: Michael Weiland for their expert tutelage and to Ian Pollard for supervising
Evan Picton
treasurer@cboa.ca
the games – the entire rookie process went extremely well this season. A
big welcome to our newest members!
Secretary:
Donald MacDonald
secretary@cboa.ca
With the peak season upon us, I urge everybody to remember: the “face”
of the CBOA is not I. It is not Dick – or the CBOA Executive. The face of

day see YOU as the CBOA. So please conduct yourself in a professional
manner at all times…and have fun!
Education Chair:
Mike Bittante

Greetings from Grand Central Station (a.k.a. the Commissioner’s Desk)

As you read this, we are already into one of the busiest weekends of the season. From
December 3rd to 5th, the high school season begins in earnest with numerous tournaments
throughout the Greater Calgary area. If you have not yet received games or want more, email
me or phone me and we’ll see what we can do. Other extremely busy weekends:
! January 7th to 9th ! February 4th to 6th ! February 18th to 20th
Please go to the Arbiter and block all dates you cannot work. This minimizes having to
decline games, and helps make the assigning process more efficient. Also, we are trying to get
out most games a week in advance – so please accept or decline your assignments as
soon as possible after you are notified. Have a great season, and Happy Holidays!

Dick Vanderstam, CBOA Commissioner – 403-616-7727 – commissioner@cboa.ca

Odds-and-Ends With The Handyman (a.k.a. Member–at –Large Update)

CBOA’s first social event will be a party at Don Herman’s house at the end of the Calgary High
School Basketball Classic Tournament Finals. The Girls and Boys “A” Finals are at Crescent
Heights High School on Saturday, December 12th at 4:30 pm. The gathering at Don’s will begin
after the Boys final. Location information will be sent out as soon as possible. Come out for a
great night of basketball and fun compliments of the CBOA Executive!

Remember that the mid-season pay night is at St. Mary’s High School on Thursday, January
21st, starting at 7:00 pm. Also, if you have questions or concerns, email me anytime. Your
Member-at-Large is your link to the general operation of the CBOA, and it’s Executive. Please
don’t hesitate to let me know of any suggestions you have to make our association better.

Makin’ a List and Checking it Twice (a.k.a. Evaluation Report)

Anyone who would like to be evaluated this year please contact me as soon as possible so we
can arrange for an evaluator to come watch you work. This is especially true if you wish to be
considered for an appointment to High School Provincials this season, or future addition to the
ACAC panel. CBOA has a large group of qualified people to evaluate local officials, so the
goal is to provide a full evaluation to any CBOA member that requests one.

The 2009-10 edition of the CBOA Mentor Program is in full swing. The list of mentors and
their charges is on the CBOA website at http://www.cboa.ca/evaluation.html. Please use your
mentor as someone to bounce questions off of, or to provide general advice on matters of
officiating. Mentors: please make every effort to stay in touch with your teams this year. If
you’ve been left off the list, email me and I will add you to one of the mentors’ teams.

Canada is continuing to move towards implementing a National Certification Program for

basketball officials. The new program will allow for relatively uniform training and certification
of basketball referees from coast to coast in Canada. The CBOA is tailoring its own local
evaluation and education process to match the national initiative. You can read more about
this system – which was introduced at the November 21st CBOA General Meeting – can be
found at http://www.refalberta.ca/public/ncp.html. Have a great season!

The Latest from the Bank of CBOA (a.k.a. Treasurer’s Desk)

With holiday expenses near, some may consider an advance on their fees. Here’s what to do:
• Email Admir Chihaluca (admirc@mac.com), or Chris Pelletier (pelsh22@hotmail.com).
• Cheques are mailed to your Arbiter address on the third Sunday each month – ensure your
Arbiter information is up-to-date and get requests in early to avoid delays.
• When there are emergency circumstances, CBOA will do its best to accommodate people.

Thanks to all for your continued support – and have a great Holiday Season!

Evan Picton, CBOA Treasurer – treasurer@cboa.ca

Hello from Whistleblowers Academy (a.k.a. The Education Desk)

Welcome to the 2009-10 High School Season! Calgary High School Athletics has instituted a few
rule modifications for this season:
• No dunking during intervals – that includes pre-game warm-up, half-time, and between periods.
• T-Shirts are allowed – but they must be the same as the dominant color on the uniform.
• Game times are 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm with at least a 20 minute warm up. This means if the
first game ends at 6:20 pm – the next one starts at 6:40 pm. Warm-up begins when the floor is
clear, or when the teams for the second game begin warm-up (whichever comes first).
• You may shorten the warm-up only if approached by the coaches to do so.
• Remember this is for high school games within Calgary only – and that Rocky View, Foothills,
and other rural districts have not adopted these changes.
Please focus on using proper FIBA mechanics and signals. The 2 person mechanics manual can
be downloaded at http://www.fiba.com/downloads/Rules/2008/TwoPersonOfficiating2008.pdf

THE ART OF LEADERSHIP – Peter Drucker

Simply and plainly defined, a leader is one who has followers. Leaders deserve to have followers if
they have earned recognition. Authority alone is no longer enough to command respect.

Leaders see things through the eyes of followers. Leaders put themselves in their shoes, and help
them make their dreams come true.

Leaders do not say "Get going!" Instead, a leader says, "Let's go!" and leads the way. Leaders do not
walk behind with a whip but are out in front with a banner.

Leaders assume that followers are working with them, not for them. They consider their followers
partners in the work and see to it that they share in the rewards. Leaders glorify the team spirit.

Leaders duplicate themselves in others. They are "people" builders. They help those under them to
grow big because they realize that the more big people an organization has, the stronger it will be.

Leaders do not hold people down, but lift them up. Leaders reach out their hands to help their
followers scale the peaks.

Leaders have faith in people; believe in them, trust them, and thus draw out the best in them. Leaders
find that others will rise to their highest expectations.

Leaders use heart as well as head. After the facts have been seen, they let their hearts take a look,
too. Leaders are not just bosses--but friends.

Leaders are self-starters. They create plans and set them in motion. Leaders are people of action--
both dreamers and doers.

Leaders have a sense of humor. Leaders are not stuffed shirts. They can laugh at themselves--have a
humble spirit.

Leaders can be led and are not interested in always having their own way, but finding the best way.
Leaders always have an open mind.

Leaders keep their eyes on high goals and strive to make the efforts of their followers and themselves
contribute to the enrichment and achievement of more abundant living for all.
Peter Drucker is an American writer, consultant, commentator, and founder of the Leader to Leader Institute.

the Harvard Business Review in 2005. '"
