Title of documentary: Dont blame Facebook

Channel/ Time: Channel 4, 10pm Monday 22 July 2013


Target Audience: Mainly teenagers, some parents of teenagers
Summarise the opening 5 minutes:

What is the documentary about? Whats the main controversy? The main controversy is
about social media- the documentary is biased as it portrays social media in a negative way.
Generally what happens?
What would you expect to happen in the remaining 25 minutes?

Analyse the first minute of the documentary (0-60 seconds)


The opening:

How does the opening 10 seconds begin? There is a pan of somebody using a computer and
its slightly blurred. There are also some effects used- a fuzzing noise is used during this clip
which resembles an electric fault sound. There are many wipe transition leading you from
one clip to another. These quick cuts are used in a montage. There is an overthe-shoulder
shot of somebody watching a child on a computer, and a shot used involving lots of screens,
with different forms of social media on them. There is then a fade out to the title screen.

Images used:

What images are used and why? Image of child on computer to indicate how social media
dominates childrens lives, pan of somebody typing reflects the topic of the documentary,
images of the like button on facebook; twitter dashboard- accentuates how popular the
logos are for the sites, image of somebody on their mobile, image of a girl taking a selfie,
low angle shot of men walking in a business environment with a screenshot of a tweet a
colleague had put.

Sound used:

What dialogue/speech is used and why? Just voiceover at first, then vox pops- no
interviewer.
What questions are asked/ likely to have been asked (work this out from answers given)what happened to you on social media? What did you post which you regret?
Is there a voiceover/ narrator? Yes, there is a voice over- providing facts, immediately
provides a biased opinion some of us are just one click away from a cock-up.
Music/ sounds- why are they used? They have used non-diegetic music (a woman singing,
pop song) to begin the program, leading up to the title screen. There are also zapping
sounds (like electrical fault). It then changes to upbeat high pitched music.

Facts and stats: There are over 750 million of us with facebook on phones, 6 billion hours of video
watched each month on YouTube.
Vox pop: There are vox pop interviews as a montage involving people who have been in trouble
with social media- posted bad things which have got out of hand- medium close ups, medium shots,
zooms into their face.
Establishing shots, voiceover, framing/composition of shots, vox pops, interviews, to add
interest/entertain the audience, facts/stats and use of captions.

1-3 minutes
Images used:

What images are used and why? Someone typing at a keyboard, man sitting on his sofa on
his laptop. Reconstruction of somebody on laptop tweeting mean tweets. Quick cuts from
reconstruction to the interview. Image of man boxing- introduced before story of Curtis is
introduced. Long shot of Curtis practising boxing. Over-the shoulder shot of Curtis on his
mobile phone. Cuts from medium shot to medium close up of Curtis.
Provide examples of how mise en scene is used to add to the sense of realism- laptops,
phones, casual clothes, normal living room for reconstruction- shows wherever you are you
can post mean things. Location of John Peggs interview- outside Hall Green Boxing Club.

Sound used:

What dialogue/speech is used and why? Voiceover, Voice of Curtis woodhouse describing his
negative experience of social media.
What questions are asked/ likely to have been asked (work this out from answers given) why
do you use social media? What sort of things does your twitter troll post about you? Asks
John Pegg, trainer how Curtis reacts to mean twitter posts.
Is there a voiceover/ narrator? Yes, throughout, unless interviewees are speaking.
Music/ sounds- why are they used? Upbeat music when introducing Curtis woodhouse- the
boxer- alongside medium long shot of him boxing, music matches punching. Ping sound as
mean tweet appears on screen. Sad, low paced music after Curtis says about the mean
tweets hes received and when it says about Curtis losing his English boxing title.
Captions when introducing people.

3-5 minutes
Images used: quick cuts of different angles of the motorway on the way to Sheffield to find his mean
tweeter. Cuts from reconstruction of tweeter to Curtis in car on the way to him.

What images are used and why? Tracking shot when Curtis is in the car on the way to find
his mean tweeter, medium shots of him, close up of tweeters face, low angle shot of sky,
Archival footage of troll apologising on national TV.
Provide examples of how mise en scene is used to add to the sense of realism- Curtis in
athletic gear, facial expression of man as he apologises.

Sound used:

What dialogue/speech is used and why? Mixture of voiceover and interview of Curtis.
What questions are asked/ likely to have been asked (work this out from answers given)

Music/ sounds- why are they used? Upbeat tone as boxer goes towards house of mean
tweeter. Pings of twitter posts.

5-7 minutes
Images used:

What images are used and why? Medium shot of Jed in his house- then zooms in to a
medium close up of his face, long shot of him getting into car, high angle shot of him running
up the stairs as his mum describes him as lively. Reconstruction of him and his friends pan
shot of beers and laptop.
Provide examples of how mise en scene is used to add to the sense of realism- normal
clothes,

Sound used:

What dialogue/speech is used and why? Jed being interviewed, his mother talking about
him.
What questions are asked/ likely to have been asked (work this out from answers given)
Whats Jed like as a person (to mother), ask Jed Describe what happened?
Is there a voiceover/ narrator? Yes, it tells part of the story, and the interviewee expands.
Music/ sounds- why are they used? High pitched upbeat tone when telling storyasynchronous sound.

7-9 minutes
Images used:

What images are used and why? A long shot of Jedd in bed receiving a phone call.

Sound used:

What dialogue/speech is used and why? Mainly interviewees talking- less voiceover, a
statement from facebook. He says when u type his name into the internet, it comes up that
hes a drug dealer- itll never be removed from the internet.

When did you first hear about what happened to Jedd? (to mother)
Is there a voiceover/ narrator? A little bit- mainly the mother and Jedd talking
Music/ sounds- why are they used? Sound of his phone ringtone.
Expert interview- Tom Latchem, journalist- published story about people selling cannabis
over facebook- medium shot, quiet music behind him talking.
