Dialysis Nurse(full time)


Provide hands-on nursing care and function as Opening Nurse (ensuring all machines are ready, refrigerator is at
proper temperature, medications are current, blood work processed, and all parties contacted about abnormal lab
results). Fill role of Charge Nurse (CN) as needed and close the center if someone calls in, including organizing the
unit, checking machine cleanliness, and counting medications. Work collaboratively with 1 or 2 other nurses as well as
the CN to develop short- and long-term care plans that involve providing dialysis treatment for 20 patients who have
permanent fistulas, grafts, and catheters, using equipment like Fresenius H & T, on 4 daily shifts. Assess patients and
update computerized flowsheets/notes on observations as well as with information such as status on returning from
hospital, new medications and/or diagnoses, immunizations, labs, and advice for further evaluation. Perform routine
tests, introduce IVs, distribute medication, monitor equipment for ventilator-dependent patients, and intervene in
emergencies to stabilize patients. Manage dialysis equipment, reporting problems and assisting with set-up. Explain
the benefits and side effects of dialysis to patients as well as to provide education about medication and conditions.
Selected to function as Charge Nurse during absence of full-time CN.

language/cultural barriers, currently providing in-house training for peers and new employees.

Initially hired as an intern and retained as an RN after graduation, filling many Charge Nurse duties, supervising 6
LPNs, and leading projects to resolve many unit problems. Closely monitored staffs performance while personally
caring for 25 patients. Provided total patient care throughout their stay, including initial and ongoing assessment, care
planning and implementation, and updating the appropriate medical professional about observed issues. Delivered
chemotherapy according to strict protocol. Independently and in conjunction with MDs, performed procedures such as
catheterizing bladders, inserting and administering feedings via nasogastric tube, monitoring all critical indicators,
administering medication of various types, maintaining skin integrity and proper wound care, and ensuring adequate
oxygenation. Extensive one-on-one education with patients and family members about health issues, signs of
problems, and required actions.
Developed, implemented, and managed hospital-wide infection control program, constantly evaluating results to
identify areas for improvement.
Significantly lowered infection rate, patient pain and stress, and material expenses by studying care of oncology
pediatric patients for 3 months then changing protocols for cannulation so that patients stayed with the same
needle for 4-5 days instead of 2-3 days and a different typing of bandaid was used that was more adhesive.
Eliminated safety issues caused by an open-door policy in pediatrics; requested management to hire a doorman
exclusive to pediatrics and mandated that anyone entering have document signed by charge nurse or manager.
Prevented loss/theft of materials and medications by locking everything away and requiring a signature, ID, and
department information be recorded on a sign-out sheet before anything could be taken.
Resolved long-standing problem of too few unit-based infusion pumps for chemotherapy by explaining the
disadvantages (delayed treatment and substandard results) to management; received requested new machines.
Proactively resolved long wait for many medical/surgical patients by triaging the patients, contacting their
insurance for approval, and presenting the worst cases to doctors and/or management to get them better care.
