salmon are just two of many
splendid sights youll find at
Goldstream Provincial Park.
Between the lush old-growth forest
and crystalline river lies a paradise
that invites visitors to escape city life
and experience the joys of nature.
Everyone can enjoy the parks
activities and amenities, including
those offered at the Goldstream
Nature House.
Located in the heart of Goldstream
Park, the Nature House first opened
its doors in 1976 where they offer

environmental education on Southern Vancouver Island. Some of the

features include interactive displays,
dynamic exhibits, live wildlife
cameras and nature tours.
Naturalists provide guided
excursions through a twisting web of
hiking trails and are available to
answer any visitor questions.
Commitment to environmental
education does not end with the
presence of experienced and
knowledgeable naturalists. Visitors
are encouraged to explore the
facilitys vast collection of nature
books and field guides. The Nature
House also boasts a collection of

round to elementary and high schools.
As the seasons change, so does
the focus of the educational programs. In the wintertime, students
can experience gold rush fever as
they relive stories about the British
Columbia Gold Rush. Autumn is
salmon season, with activities revolving around a natural phenomenon:
the salmon run. Spring and summer
mark perfect occasions for the further discovery of nature, especially
eagles, insects, and estuaries.
No longer a grade school student?
No problem. The Goldstream
Nature House offers programs for

the public on weekends and during

the summer months. Popular topics
include animal migration, island
biogeography and the nocturnal
habits of local creatures. Movie
nights, trivia games and guest
speakers are included in the facilitys
list of diverse activities.
Whether looking to expand
knowledge on biodiversity or to
experience a natural phenomenon,
visitors will be sure to have a
memorable experience. Goldstream
Nature House is open daily from 9
a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

We Couldnt Believe
This Worked!
And heres how it worked
Dear Friends,
We were once told to count our calories to
lose weight. Measure every meal on a scale,
look up the calories then record that in a
daily food diary and total that up at the end
of the day.
Are you kidding me!
Were not scientists or
mathematicianswe just want to be
healthy and lose that Christmas 10 poundsplus last years
15 if you know what Im talking about.
Weve tried just about every diet there was but nothing
seemed to keep it off; every pound we lost we gained 2 more
back. We often discussed what we were going to do next but
were so frustrated and running out of ideas on our own. By
now my husband was experiencing chronic pain, arthritis and
nerve pain, and I was always tired with no energy. It was
awful.
Just when we were about to give up forever, we were
introduced to Danielle, our Registered Holistic Nutritionist.
We have to tell you, in the beginning we were very skeptical
about the whole process. But we had nothing to lose at this
point and so we decided to give it a try. In a nut shell, here is
what she taught us
1. Calories give no indication of quality of foods being
eaten. Just because a packaged food is low in calories
doesnt mean its not full off artificial preservatives,
sugars, flavourings and colourings; rancid oils; GMOs;
other non-food additives.
2. Counting calories is unnecessary when your food doesnt
have labels. We were encourage to eat outside the box literally and figuratively. Moving away from processed
foods enabled us to become more creative with whole
foods ingredients by making more meals at home from
scratch.
3. Counting calories was stressful. Stress around our meal
time was disrupting the digestive process by activating the
wrong areas of our nervous system; we are more likely to
incompletely digest our meal resulting in loss of nutrient
absorption and unfavourable effects like bloating and gas.
4. She showed us how to live life not count calories!
We have finally found something that works. We are so
excited. Not only did my husbands pain levels drop, but so
did our pant size. It has sparked a feeling of wellness and an
increase in energywe are motivated to continue.
