Review by Founder Managing Trustee

Dear Friends,

2008-'09 proved to be very important year in the history of Samarthanam. I gratefully

thank all our team members, directors, supporters and well wishers for this momentous
achievement. Samarthanam believes in empowering the disabled and the underprivileged
people by providing quality education and exposing them to the opportunities of
information and accessible technologies.

We experiment with many ideas for resource mobilization and project conceptualization
to maximize our effort to change the lives of the disabled and economically impoverished
children and youth in the country. Samarthanam achieved a growth of 27 per cent in
terms of annual turnover in the last financial year. The associate membership of the
World Blind Union is its greatest achievement of this financial year. Samarthanam is in
the process of creating an Indian Blind Union. The organisation also partnered with
Deshpande Foundation for the expansion of its interventions in Hubli-Dharwad areas
of North Karnataka. As a part of this process Samarthanam is expanding its TechVision
project in the rural areas of North Karnataka.

Another milestone was the expansion of Samarthanam's residential-cum-educational

support facility for the disabled and underprivileged children in Bidadi village of
Ramnagaram district in Southern Karnataka. The Bidadi division will help us in expanding
our qualitative residential and educational support to the rural areas of Bangalore.

Samarthanam Vidyaprasad mid-day meal programme assures quality mid-day meal to

over 35000 underprivileged children. The project enjoys great support from organisations
and individual donors from Bangalore besides the Government.
3
Annual Report 2008 -’09 TM

TechVision- Samarthanam's most innovative project is poised for a nationwide

expansion. The project is in the process of extending its presence and services
to complete Karnataka and major cities of India very soon.

A residential rehabilitation centre for women in distress is functional in

Bangalore, as a part of the rehabilitation initiatives of Samarthanam. The centre
takes care of 50 women by providing lodging, boarding and vocational
training to help them to become independent, emotionally and financially.

Samarthanam-Parisara, waste management initiative- reached the new heights

of success by offering innovative waste management and natural resource
management solutions to the corporate houses and educational institutions in
Bangalore. The programme receives excellent support from major corporate
organisations in Bangalore.

We aim to reach the disabled and underprivileged children and youth in all
major cities of India in another three years, and all district headquarters within
10 years. Samarthanam envisages making an international presence in its
fund raising efforts.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the individuals and corporate
donors, volunteers, collaborators and friends who were instrumental in achieving
all the milestones this year. I appreciate the teamwork of all my colleagues, and
take note of their dedication, hard work and commitment for Samarthanam and
the cause.
Samarthanam reiterate its commitment to change the lives of the disabled
and underprivileged children and youth in India by providing quality service
by organising the resources available in the community.

computer by using JAWS screen reading software. Apart from the academic support,
Samarthanam provides opportunities to identify and nurture the arts and sports related
activities in the children. The project has helped Samarthanam to successfully educate

Mid-day meal Programmme
Samarthanam has been providing free mid-day meals to children studying in Government schools under
the Akshara Dasoha project of Government of Karnataka since 2003. Samarthanam Vidyaprasad provides
mid-day meals to 35,000 students in 123 schools in urban and rural suburbs of Bangalore. Nutritious
meals are provided, six days a week throughout the academic year in these 123 schools in Bangalore.
The food is cooked in centralised, automated kitchens and distributed through customized vehicles.

8
TM
Annual Report 2008 -’09

This year Samarthanam-Vidyaprasad reached to the new heights by providing 70 lakhs

meals a year. Samarthanam provided sweets and special meals occasionally to the children
depending on the availability of funds.

Impact of Samarthanam Vidyaprasad

Increased School Participation: Samarthanam Vidyaprasad has a great effect on school

participation, not just in terms of getting more children enrolled in the registers but also
in terms of daily student attendance.

Preventing classroom hunger: Our study showed that many children reach school with
an empty stomach. Even children who have a meal before they leave for school get
hungry by afternoon and are not able to concentrate. Children from families who cannot
give them a lunch box or child who stay far away from the school feel hungry during
school hours. Samarthanam Vidyaprasad helps to overcome the classroom hunger by
providing nutritious and stumpous mid-day meal.

Facilitates healthy growth of children: Samarthanam Vidyaprasad works

as a regular source of “nutrition” for children, and facilitates their healthy
growth. It helps Vidyaprasad meals are naturally rich with nutrients like
iron which help to prevent “anemia”, a widespread cause of weakness
and poor growth among children.

Fosters social equality: Samarthanam inculcates democratic values among

the students. The students from various social backgrounds learn to sit
together and share a common food, without the discrimination of social
status, cast or religion.Gender gap in school participation tends to minimize
after mid-day meals are introduced. Attraction of a nutritious mid-day meal
erodes the traditional barriers that prevent girls from attending school.
