Criterion A: Inquiring and Analyzing

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

Design Need
This is an explanation of the problem I intend to solve:

My family and I are regularly in the study

room, to relax, read a book, listen to music or
surf on the Internet. But there is just one
problem; at night when we switch on the
lights, the room becomes too bright.
Currently, the two ways to solve this problem
is either to turn on the blazing lights or not
use any light at all, which means that we
cannot do anything in the room at all. This is
an inconvenience, as all of us want a calm
atmosphere and not a glaring light blinding
our eyes before sleeping. With a bit of
illumination, my family and I will be able to
fully use the study room during the night.

Design Brief
This is what Ive intended to do to solve the problem I identified:
In order to solve my problem of not having enough light in the study room, I have
decided to create a source of light in the room so my family and I can go in the room
and be able to read a book, go on the computer without having to turn on the lights.
The room is green and has a wooden, big table in the middle with the computer,
books, and stationary on top, which is the perfect place to put an illuminable object.
Thus the lighting will be designed to be placed on a flat surface, provide enough light
and its brightness can be adjusted. Also, the light should enhance the aesthetics of
my study room by matching the rooms color, theme, design and dcor.

Criterion B: Developing Ideas

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

Task B1- Design Specification

This is a list of requirements my product must be in order to be successful and
feasible:
Type of Specification
1. Function(s)
(What should the light achieve?
What is its purpose?)

Specification

Justification

(1.1) Provides sufficient light

that improves the
atmospere in the study
room

(1.1) As a part of my design

problem, I have stated that
the light should improve the
rooms atmosphere by
proving light. Additionally, the
light provided will need to be
able to sufficiently illuminate
the room.

(1.2) Able to provide enough

light when the room is
dark

(1.2) It is essential for the

product to produce efficient
light, as it is its entire
purpose to do so.
Without being able to provide
the necessary light when the
room is dark, it will not be
able to be used, thus not
solving the design problem.
2. Performance
(Where and when is your light
designed to be placed/used?)

(2.1) For it to be used

(2.1) Can be easily moved
competently, the product will
around
need to be easily moved

(2.2) Needs to be able to be
product will be placed on is
placed on a flat surface or table. also big. This spec is
important because it will be
convenient for the client to
move it around the table.
(2.2) It will need to be able to
be placed on a flat surface,
meaning that it must be stable
on the table so that when it is
used; it is safe, firm and
expedient.

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

3. Target Market
Who is intended to use the light
(age gender interest)?

4. Aesthetics
What design styles will the light
have?
What is the image being created?

(3.1) Should be appropriate for

all ages

(3.1) Since the product is

intended to use in the study
room, which is used by all
family members (2 adults, 1
teenager), the design of the
product should be
appropriate for all ages.

(4.1) Should match the theme

of the room, this includes the
color, material.

(4.1) It is essential for the

product to match the design
of the room. The room (seen
in the picture in the Design
Brief) has green wallpaper
and dark brown bookshelf
with a big, light, wooden table
in the middle. The product
will need to fit in with the
design of the room and cannot
be made out of bright acrylic
pink since they do not match.
The product can be made out
of wood. If the appearance of
the lamp does not fit in, the
aesthetics of the room will be
somewhat unpleasant.
Therefore, I believe that it is
most fitting for my products
design to match the theme of
the room.

(4.2) Should have a

minimalistic design

(4.2) I have decided for the

lamp to be minimalistic. This
is because the room is already
filled with other things so
having a lamp with a complex
design will even add to the
rooms clutter. Therefore the
products design should be
minimal, possibly abstract but
simple. Additionally to add to
the lamps creativity, this
minimalistic design should

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

not be in a form of a normal

lamp.
5. Safety
What safety factors are important
in the design?

(5.1.) The distance between the

light bulb and the body of the
lamp must not allow any
overheating.
(5.2) The product must be
balanced and stable

(5.1) For the product to be

safe when in use, the distance
between the light bulb and
the lamp must not allow any
overheating. The bulb
overheating can cause the
material to burn. For instance,
if the bulb is wrapped with
paper, the paper may get on
fire due to the bulbs intense
heat and the twos close
distance.
(5.2) The product needs to be
safely used by being balanced
and stable. This is because the
product should not fall over
or its balance be easily
affected by movement. Its
efficiency and usage will
decrease if it is not stable.
Additionally, the products
poor stability may cause
accidents. For instance, it may
fall down the table and hit the
clients feet or collapse on the
table and knock off a cup or
hit the computer.

6. Properties
Are there any special qualities?

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

(6.1) The product should be

long lasting

(6.1) It is important for the

product to be long lasting, in
other words, be able to be
used for a long time. Its
design and quality should be
able to be maintained for a
long period of time. To do so,
the product, including the
design and use of materials,
needs to be high quality,
stable and strong. For its

maximum usage, the product

needs to be able to be used for
a long time.
7. Dimensions
Are there any limitations or
considerations with respect to
size?

(7.1) The measurements of the

lamp must be at least 15x20x8
but should not exceed 30x 45x
13
(all measurements in cm)
(width x length x breadth)

(7.1) The minimum and

maximum measurements of
the product provided in the
specification beside should be
followed for the product to
function efficiently and also
match the surroundings of
where it will be placed.
Additionally, for it to sit on
the table in the room that it is
intended to be. The lamp
should not be small since the
surface area of the table itself
is 1.5mx1.5m, and to provide
sufficient light to the
belongings on the table, the
lamp should not be small. Yet,
the product should not be big
as it will look unbalanced and
awkward. Thus, by making its
measurements in the range
provided, it will fit on the
table nicely and provide
enough light.

Task B2- Design Ideas

1) Feasible Ideas
In order to create the product, I will need to design it. This stage starts from a
brainstorm and then a selection of designs sketched. Below are 4 feasible design
ideas I have created:

The 4 Annotated Designs:

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

I have chosen 4 ideas that I believe will be most appropriate and will fit my specs.
The sketches are all drawn in a 3D perspective and are fully annotated, providing
the possible dimensions, material/s, methods of joining, placement of the light bulb
etc.

2) Evaluation of Each Design

Based on the 4 ideas above, I will need to choose one. I will do this by evaluating
each of my designs against each point of the specification in an appraisal of ideas
table.
My designs are rated out of 5 against each specification, I will be using the designs
total as a considering factor in choosing my final design.

3) Chosen Design
Based on my appraisal of ideas table I have created above, it is clear that Design #4
has the highest total score.
Additionally, I believe that this design has a minimalistic design; it is made out of
wood (that will compliment the aesthetics of the room), and is safe. Where as other
designs such as design #1, has an unsuitable placement of the light bulb and design
#2 has a safety issue with the mulberry paper and light bulb that may cause
overheating. While design #3 is made out of white acrylic, which is a material that
may cause an imbalance with the wooden cone, is easily dirtied and does not match
the surrounding of the room that the product will be placed in. Therefore, design #4
seems as the most appropriate choice, the design matches my criteria and it scored
a full 55 overall score and a 5/5 for all of the specs I created.
After considering this and the fact that the design seems most feasible for this task,
this will be my final, chosen design.

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

Task B3- Development of Design

There are improvements that should be made to make my design better and meet
the specifications that are not currently met. These improvements will be based on a
series of interviews with my peers and my chosen client.
1) Feedback from peers:
Firstly, I asked my friends for possible improvements, here are the suggestions they
made:
Peer
#1 Grace
#2 Fah
#3 Charlie
#4 Don

Suggestion
The light may not be able to shine as good because
the light bulb is facing the side
The design can be less bulky
None
Looks redundant but interesting and nice

2) Feedback from client:

Secondly, I have asked my parents on their perspective of the product, as they will
be using it in the study room. Their feedback is essential as they are the clients of
this product, so the design should appeal and please them. Below is a summary on
what they said:

The design has a simple/minimalistic design

Can also be used as a decoration
Nice idea of the initial N
The light shines straight it will shine right on the eye. A reading lamp has a
flexible head/body,
It is stable

3) Self-feedback (+client feedback)

Since I am also a user of this product, I also have a say in the design of this product. I
have critically thought on the problems that this product may face and the possible
improvements.
a. I believe that a possible problem with this design is its ability to produce efficient
light (also one of my specification). It was also stated in my client feedback and from
Grace. This is because the bulb directly shines to one side and the light will likely be
too strong and bright. It maybe better if the light bulb hung down instead so that the
light is not too strong and this way, the light will be able to provide more and better
light to the atmosphere.

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

14

To solve this problem, I have changed the design of my product. Firstly, I have
decided to change the cone into a dome since a cone will be challenging to create.
Since it is a dome and pinewood cannot be exploded, its material will be changed to
acrylic. And to add to the minimalistic, simple design, the acrylic will be transparent.
Replacing the material from pinewood to acrylic will make the product more
balanced as less weight is on the right side of the product (since acrylic is much
lighter than wood).
Furthermore, I have decided to place the dome/bulb to shine downwards in order
to produce better light.
This is my modified final design: (measurements are all in cm)
The dome and the
pinewood will be
joined by securely
gluing the two
pieces together. The
top of the dome (or
the area that
connects with the
body of the lamp),
will have a square
hole that will have
the identical
dimensions of the
base of the
pinewood. While
the other pieces of
pine wood will be
joined by diagonally
shaving each
connective ends by
exactly 45 degrees
and then glued
together.
(note: I fear that the product may not be stable and balanced as the right side of the
N shape has the bulb and cone attached to it, so the lamps weight will be skewed to
the right. If this occurs, one of my specs will not be achieved. During the creation
phase, if the lamp faces any issues with balancing, a horizontal wood extension
maybe added to the left. The piece will be attached and continued from the left side
of the N shape, so the outer left piece of wood would look like a flipped L)

Task B4- Final Design

1) Final Design
Based on Task B3, I believe there are improvements that can be made. So I have
developed my chosen design and created it into a CAD drawing using the 123Design
software. Based on my development this is my final design, below is my final design
drawn orthographically:
Orthographic:
Note: the color of acrylic is actually transparent but for it to be clearly seen in CAD, I
have temporarily changed its color to grey.

2) Evaluation of Final Design

To evaluate my final design, the table below justifies the reason why I have chosen
design #4 aka the design digitally created on 123design above.
Specification

Justification of Final Chosen Design

(1.1) Provides sufficient light that

improves the atmosphere in the
study room

5/5

(1.2) Able to provide enough light

when the room is dark

With recent changes to the design, the lamp will provide

sufficient light that will improve the atmosphere in the
study room. This will allow the lamp to provide more
and better light to the atmosphere.

5/5
If it is able to provide sufficient light (seen in the
specification above), the lamp will be able to provide
enough light when the room is dark.

(2.1) Can be easily moved around

5/5
Due to the designs solidity and firmness, it can be
moved around with ease. There are two points of
contact that the product will have with the table. Also,
the compact pinewood and its smooth surface will make
it easy to transport the lamp around.

(2.2) Needs to be able to be

placed on a flat surface or table.

5/5
As mentioned above, the lamp has two points of contact.
These two points of contact, which is the bottom of the
N shape, are both smooth and flat that makes the
product to be able to be placed on the intended table.

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

18

(3.1) Should be appropriate for

all ages

(4.1) Should match the theme of

the room, this includes the color,
material.

5/5
Due to its simple design, I believe that this design is
appropriate and appeals to all ages. As a teenager, I do
like its design and based on the interview with my
parents; they do like the design as well. This shows that
this final design is appropriate for all ages (teenager and
adults). Since these 2 age groups are the ones who will
be using this product, and its design attracts all of the
clients (despite the age disparity), the design is
appropriate.

5/5
The design of the lamp matches with the aesthetics of
the room it is aimed to be placed in. The theme of this
room is nature as there is a wooden book self, table and
green wallpaper. The properties of the lamp include
being made out of wood and transparent acrylic. Firstly,
the products material is pinewood, which matches with
the light brown wooden table that the product will be
placed on. Its color will truly compliment each other.
Additionally, the green background of the room will
match the light brown color of the pinewood since both
colors (brown and green) are often associated together
and seen together in objects such as trees, plants, etc.
Therefore, it will promote to the rooms theme of nature.
Additionally, the transparent acrylic used for the dome
will match the rooms appearance as it is transparent
and will blend in easily. The use of transparent acrylic
will make it look more modern, artistic, etc. I believe
that the aesthetics of this design achieves this
specification as it the design blends in with the
aesthetics of the room.

(4.2) Should have a minimalistic

design

5/5
My chosen final design is minimalistic. This is because it
is of a basic N shape, with straight and consistent edges
and lines. My design does not contain intricate details,

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

19

small patterns, instead its design is solid, bold and

simple. This can also be supported by the client feedback
where both of my parents/client agreed that the design
is minimalistic.
(5.1.) The distance between the
light bulb and the body of the
lamp must not allow any
overheating.

(5.2) The product must be

balanced and stable

5/5
The distance between the light bulb and the body of the
lamp is close, however, due to the body of the lamp
being made out of acrylic (and not paper like design #2).
Acrylic is a strong material; the likelihood of a light bulb
overheating it will be low. Therefore, safety issues
regarding overheating will not be present with this
design.
5/5
The design of the product is balanced and stable. Seen
by the explanation in specs 2.1 and 2.2, the design is
solid and very durable. Additionally, the
breath/thickness of the product is pretty thick (8cm),
therefore, it will be stable.
However, as mentioned in the self-evaluation of the
chosen design, the weight of the product will be mainly
skewed to the right as there is the bulb and cone. But I
do believe that the design I have right now is stable and
balanced enough.

(6.1) The product should be long

lasting
(predicted by its design and use
of materials)

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

5/5
The product will be long lasting since it is made out of
pinewood, a solid and sturdy material that will be near
impossible to wear out or break if used normally.
Moreover, Pinewood is widely used in carpentry items,
so its appliance in this product will not pose a problem
on its age of use. The acrylic dome will also be durable.
As for the design, it is durable and firm, making it more
able to be used for a longer time. Additionally, it is
evident from the other specs (5.2) (5.1) (2.2) that the

20

product is safe, strong, resilient, balanced and stable

which shows its ability to be long lasting.

(7.1) The measurements of the

lamp must be at least 15x20x8
but should not exceed 30 cm x
45cm x 13cm

5/5
The dimensions presented in the CAD drawing fit in my
spec. The designs measurements do not exceed the
maximum and is not lower than the minimum
requirement.

Total: 55 points
Summary of Evaluation:
Design #4, or my chosen design has matched all of my specifications; therefore it is
feasible. It meets my function, and it is clearly suitable to be placed in the intended
atmosphere. The design meets all of my specification and its categories such as
function, properties, safety, aesthetics, target market, and performance. There will
need no further development for the design and for my specification.

Criterion C: Creating the Solution

Task C1- Plan for Production

I have created a logical steps in which I needed to create my product. This includes the process, allocated
resources, and estimated required time and safety precautions. The plan I have created below is detailed
and clearly thought out as all of the components of my productions creation process are created.

Safety:

I have the responsibility to employ safe working techniques in order to avoid harm to others and myself.
Below are safety issues that I will need to keep in mind...

1. Always give my undivided attention

2. Remove loose fitting clothing; jewelry and tie back long hair.
3. No contact with water while using machineries. This is because the water will cause the surface to be
slippery and may even cause an electrical shock.
4. Goggles, gloves, apron, other protective devices, should be used at all times when the equipment is in
use. This includes the scroll saw, disk sander, drill press, etc.
5. Must be aware of sharp edges and blades and must be careful when used. E.g saw
6. A distance should be clear of people and debris around the machine
7. If assistance for certain machines is required, I must ask Khun Ya or Mr. Tim to help as the usage of the
machine may be too challenging and pose a threat to my safety if I used it.

Depending on the type of materials and equipment I am using, I will need to use different or sometimes
even all of the listed safety rules above. But most importantly, I will need to be attentive at all times.

*note: in the middle of creating my product I realized that it was hard to connect the
dome (circular surface) to a piece of wood (flat surface), I couldve cut the edge of
the wooden piece for the dome to fit in but I thought it would be best if I modified
my entire design. Please check C4

Task C4- Justification of Changes to Design and Plan

I will be outlining the changes I made to my design and plan as my product has turned out
different from what I have intended but much more improved. Below are the changes and
justifications I have made to my 1) design and my 2) plan:
1) Changes to Design

I have made these significant modifications because of several reasons. I was writing my
plan but soon realized that it would not work out. I did not think about the step of joining
and installing the dome and wooden piece through properly. The dome cannot be joined to
the edge of the pinewood for the bulb to be installed.

So, Mr. Tim suggested changing my lamp design. Since I removed the dome and its attached
roof, I changed from using the light bulb to the LED light strip. The light strip would be
looped around the holes in the body of the lamp. So, I drilled 3 holes in each of the three
wooden blanks and attached an additional N acrylic piece on each of the sides. The two N
acrylic pieces with the identical sizes of the pinewood would be attached to each side of the
pinewood. Refer to the picture above for the exact changes.

Changes removed from the design:

1. Dome
2. Rotated L shape
Changes added to the design:
1. LED Light Strip
2. Drilled holes on lamps wooden body
3. N acrylic shapes
4. Screws on each end of N
I believe that this design is much more aesthetically pleasingly and more sensible use. Since
the design has changed, the process of making it also changed likewise.

2) Changes to Plan
As a lot of changes were made to my design, the process in creating it was greatly distinct
from the initial plan created. Below is list of the changes and its justifications:

1. Measurements of the pinewood body

As I received the pinewood pieces, I arranged them into the N shape I
intended but I felt that it was too small. So, I changed the measurements of the
wooden pieces by making it longer. Khun Ya had to cut new pieces. The pieces were
cut to 8cmx28cm and 8cmx33cm instead of 8cmx22cm and 8cmx28cm.
I believe that enlarging the lamps body will make improve its aesthetics as the lamp
covers more surface area and does not look small, and miniature. Additionally, this
appropriately serves its purpose of being placed on a big table.
2. Shaving the Wood
I made additions to the plan, as the plan I created was brief and did not
provide specific details on how to measure the angles of the shaved wood. The
angles of the wood were determined by laying the pieces into the N shape on a
large piece of paper. Then, the shape of the lamp was drawn on a piece of paper to
decide its angle for it to form as an N. I also required assistance from Khun Ya in
slicing the edges as this step is too challenging for me (different from my plan) but I
was watching and somewhat helped him in some minor parts.

32

The sliced wooden edges were then smoothened by using the disk sander to even
out the edges. I also sanded some parts of the edge, as it was still a bit clumpy. I
then placed the wood pieces into an N and they all fit perfectly.

3. Joining the wooden pieces

I initially planned for the method of joining of the wooden edges to be glued
but then I feared that the glue wouldnt be secure enough. So, I decided for the
shaved edges to be glued and then shot with the gun, it looked like this:

33

By changing the method of joining the wooden pieces, it allows my product to be

more stable, safe and fastened which achieves a few of my specs.
4. Drilling holes in the body
As one of my changes to design, I have decided to change to using a LED light
strip and thread it through holes drilled into the body of the lamp. Drilling these
holes require a different process: Firstly, knowing the holes had to be evenly spread
and the same for all 3 of the lamps body, I measured and marked out the placement
for the holes with a pencil on one of the pinewood pieces. I measured the thickness
of the LED light strip and got a drill bit that would be a bit bigger than the width of
the LED light strip (diameter was around 1.5cm). Then, I stacked the other two
pieces below the one with the pencil marks. Next, the vice was set up with one
wooden block to be placed in between in and one thick on placed above it for my 3
pinewood pieces to be placed on. Then, a clamp was used in securing the 3 pieces
together, not allowing them to move. I used a drill to drill in the holes. This whole
process took around 20 minutes. It looked like this:

5. Creation of N shaped acrylic

As one of my changes to design, I decided to place N shaped acrylic at the sides of
the wooden body. To do this, I trace the lamps current body on a piece of paper
with a ruler and pencil and then evenly added 1 more centimeter on each side of the

Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

34

pieces as I want the acrylic to be 3cm thick. I then used 2D design and created the N
shape according to the dimensions on the paper. This took me more time as I have
not used 2D design in a very long time. I then duplicated the N shape so there was 2
identical N shapes on the design for each side of the lamp. I printed this design on a
white acrylic piece through using a laser cutter. This took around 40 minutes. I took
the pieces home and sanded the edges with sanded paper (800 gradient and 1200
gradient). The edges became rounder and smoother.
6. Joining N shaped acrylic to the lamps body
To join the acrylic pieces onto the wooden body took a long time, this caused a delay
in submitting in my product. Firstly, I smeared TOA glue on the wooden body and
stuck the N shape on it. I clamped the 3 pieces together using 4 clamps, one on each
end of the N shape. I left it overnight but the next day I came back and the pieces fell
out. It looked like this:

Icame after school again and Mr. Tim advised to just drill it.
I aligned the N with the N, it was a bit challenging to
precisely place the N piece exactly where it needed to be. I
planned that each end of the N would be drilled; a total of 8,
so I marked it out, I also had to make sure that they were
evenly placed. I clamped the product with the table to
secure it. By the time Kabir finished the drill, I started
drilling but then both of the drills ran out of battery. So, I
had to come the day after. I used 3 different drill bits, one of
drilling into the acrylic and wood, one for enlarging the
hole in the acrylic to fit the head of the screw and one for
drilling in the screw. I was given 20 minutes in class the
Ness (Napassakorn) Tangjetanaporn 10C

35

other day to finish drilling all 8 holes and screwed them. I did not face any problems
as I became better in drilling and it became easier.
7. Weaving the LED light strip
I needed to weave in the LED light strip in the holes, as it is
a part of my new design. It was pretty easy to do; it fit
perfectly in the holes. This took me around 3 minutes to do.
After this, I sanded the unsmooth areas like around the
holes with a 1200 gradient sand paper and also polished the
acrylic using brasso as it is a bit dirty.
Summary
As the majority of components in my design were changed,
the process in creating it took a significantly longer time
than I had planned, especially the joining of the acrylic and
wooden pieces. I changed 3 of my steps (measurements,
shaving, joining of wood), removed 3 old steps and added 4
new ones as my design has changed. So the most common change to my plan is the
steps and the time taken to complete the steps. I also missed around a total of 4-5
workshop lessons as I was sick for 2 and I had volleyball tournaments for the rest so
I came in around 4 afterschool sessions from 2.30-3.45 to complete my product.
Finally, my product is completed and I believe this new, modified design will achieve
more of my specifications compared to the initial, old design.
