ABSTRACT

Puspitaningrum, Angga. 2014. Developing Module Based On Difficult Concept

And Misconception in Nomenclature of Binary Compounds and Polyatomic
Anions. Undergraduate Thesis, Chemistry Department, Faculty Of
Mathematics And Science, State University Of Malang. Adviser: (1) Dr.
Fariati, M.Sc., (2) Oktavia Sulistina, S.Pd., M.Pd.
Key Words: developing module, difficult concept, misconception, binary
compound nomenclature, polyatomic anion
Nomenclature of binary compounds and polyatomic anions is one of topics
which belong to basic concept of chemistry. Lack of students understanding about
this concept might cause students difficulties to understand the next chapter.
Besides, lack of students understanding also caused the students misconception to
occur. Difficult concept and misconception is caused by some factors, one of them
is text book which not suitable with students characteristic. So, it needed an
alternative solution. One of the alternative solution offered was developing kind of
module. The purposes of this development: (1) to produce a module based on
difficult concept and misconception on of binary compounds and polyatomic anions
chapter; (2) to know the product feasibility using validation and readability test.
Module development model design used 4-D Model which had been
developed by Thiagarajan, et al. 4-D Model consists of four steps, which are
define, design, develop, and disseminate. Development of nomenclature of binary
compounds and polyatomic anions module adapted 4-D Model only till the third
step. Assessment of the module from this research was done by content validations
and students readability test. Content validations were done by a lecturer and two
chemistry teachers, besides readability test was done by 11th and 12th grade
students in 5th State High School of Malang. The data was taken qualitatively and
quantitatively. It was analyzed using descriptive and percentage calculation
technique.
The product of developing result was a module about nomenclature of binary
compounds and polyatomic anions. The basic of developing module were perception
of difficult concept and students misconception. Material on the module was served
by hierarchy concept which is showed on mind map. The result of content
validations based on its feasibility percentage from lecturer was 86,67% (very valid),
the same as the result from two chemistry teachers. Readability test result by 11th
grade students gave the average percentage was 86,01% for students having high
cognitive achievement and 83,03% for students having low cognitive achievement.
Besides, readability test result by 12th grade students showed 86,61% and 81,84% for
students having high and low cognitive achievement respectively. These content
validations and readability test result showed that the module of this research was
suitable to be used in chemistry learning on senior high school.
