00 Overview
Capacity design provisions are required to obtain the hierarchy of resistance of the various structural components necessary for
ensuring the intended configuration of plastic hinges and for avoiding brittle failure modes.
In multi-story buildings, formation of a soft story plastic mechanism shall be prevented as such a mechanism might entail excessive
local ductility demands in the columns of the soft story. In frame buildings, including frame-equivalent systems, with two or more
stories, the following condition should be satisfied at all joints of primary or secondary seismic beams with primary seismic columns:
Rc
1.3 MRb
MRc is the sum of the design values of the moments of resistance of the column framing the joint.
MRb is the sum of the design values of the beams framing the joint.
Concrete buildings are classified in three ductility classes DCL (low ductility), DCM (medium ductility) and DCH (high ductility)
depending on their hysteretic dissipation capacity. For DCL concrete buildings, EN 1992-1-1:2004 may alternatively applied for
seismic design situation. DCM and DCH concrete buildings correspond to buildings designed, dimensioned and detailed in
accordance with specific earthquake resistance provisions, enabling the structure to develop stable mechanisms, without suffering
brittle failures.
midas Gen provides automatic capacity design to satisfy the specified ductility classes (DCM and DCH) as per EN1998-1:2004 as
well as EN1992-1-1:2004.

3 Defined structure type is used to calculate a behavior factor, q. The behavior factor can be
entered by the user as well. Also specified structure type affects the wall design results.
4 Predefined response spectrum function as per Eurocode-8(2004) or User Type function
can be selected in this dialog box to calculate the curvature ductility factor, , and wall
shear force magnification factor, . When there is no defined spectrum function, required
factors can be directly entered in Spectrum Parameters part of this dialog box.
