THE THESIS STATEMENT

First, REMEMBER: This is a critique of the effectiveness of the modes of

persuasion used, and not a summary of the film.
Your thesis statement should include: (a) the rhetorical strategies used by
the director; and, (b) the purpose/goal of the film
o Example: Different modes of persuasion were used for the audience to
effect change in the American food industry.
o Example 2: The director capitalized on ethos, pathos and logos to
persuade viewers to act on the deceptions of the food industry.
o Incorrect Example 1: Food manipulation can cause both positive and
negative effects to the human race. this is a thesis suitable for a
cause-effect essay
o Incorrect Example 2: Food safety is an important issue that the public
must be aware of and should be upheld especially in companies that
produce food. this is a thesis suitable for an informative essay
Please do not copy these examples, but create your own depending on what
you think the purpose of the film is.
