Harvest Moon is a big game, and there is plenty to learn. Rather then
learn the hard way yourself, here is a brief guide to the basics for the
impatient newbie.

How do you win the game of Harvest Moon? Being thrown on your hands your
grandpa's farm, of course you are expected to survive on your own, but
besides that, you are expected to excel, by making sure you develop the
farm into a bustling, prosperous one.
Press Start to bring up the Start Menu and you will see at the top, your
Farm percentage. This percentage increases every time you get (certain)
animals, construct another building or even marry and have a child.
Currently, the minimum percentage is not known, but 30% is the safest
bet.
The mayor of Mineral Village, Thomas, will give you three years to build
up the farm. Each year has four seasons, and each season 30 days. By the
end of three years, the mayor will inspect your farm. If it's not good
enough, he will stamp "Game Over!" onto your face and you're done for.
If it is, he will let you keep the farm and you can keep playing for an
indefinite amount of time.

Yes, you can marry in Harvest Moon : Back to Nature! Problem is, you
can't woo any other girl; there are only five girls to choose from, and
they are Elli, Anne, Karen, Popuri and Mary. The exact details on wooing
them are, of course, in the Girl Guide section; but generally, you 'woo'
them by getting their favour. Give them gifts they like and they will
like you more, until friendship blossoms into love and you can propose
to them.
Marriage is important for your Farm percentage, and having a child will
boost the percentage even further. All the girls have rivals for their
heart, so get them before 3 years or they'll all be gone :) You could
call it a race for propagation...or pleasure :D

You're no strongman, of course, and you can't stay active forever. There
is an invisible stamina meter that depletes if you use any of your
tools.
I: Depletion of Stamina
Mining and farming are, of course, the most stamina-consuming. You lose
more stamina when you work in the rain. Your character will display the
following behaviour as he grows more and more tired:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Stop work and mop his brow (this may occur more than once)
Sit down and pant
Fall flat on his face
Zero stamina - faints with a purple face, and you end up in
hospital, which causes you to oversleep and waste time
You can skip right to step 4 if you take a Red Herb or a Poisonous
Mushroom, because you'll fall ill and end up in the Hospital. That'll
teach you good eating habits :/
II: Increasing and Recovering Stamina
You can raise your maximum stamina by recovering Power Berries, which
are big, red fruits, instantly recognizeable. You can RECOVER stamina by
eating food, taking a drink or eating a Green/Blue Herb.

Mining will bag you materials that can be used to upgrade your tools
(making them more efficient). All you need is a hoe (the tool and not
the woman). Two mines can be found: the first one is behind the
waterfall in the Mountain, and the second one can only be accessed after
the lake in the Mountain freezes over in winter. Both lie in the same
area.
How to mine? Press the Square button when you're inside and your
character will swing down at the piece of ground directly in front of
him. If you are lucky, a mineral will come out, and can be used for
various purposes. Sometimes, you will get bags of gold worth 10G each.
And the mines have more than one storey; by mining, you can uncover a
ladder leading to the next level downwards.
The Winter Mine contains more valuable ore than the one that is open all
year round.

Forget that crap about how television is bad for you. In HM: BTN,
television is an important friend. It's in your house - turn it on with
the X Button, and you will get a selection of channels. You select the
channels by pressing one of the four directional buttons.
Everyday, you will be able to select the Weather Report, News and Life
on the Farm, all of which are extremely crucial; the former (press Up)
will tell you of the weather tomorrow, and whether (haha) it will rain
(meaning that you won't have to water your plants) or shine, and the
potential for hurricanes (which can destroy your Hothouse if you have
one, or blow away Chickens left outside).
The News (press Left) will keep you informed on any festivals, which you

This topic is pretty direct...I won't go too deep into it, otherwise I'd
be repeating half of this guide in a single topic 0_o
There are four types of weather:
- Sunny weather
: your normal day
- Cloudy weather
: another normal day
- Rainy weather
: no need to water plants; not adviseable
to leave animals out
- Natural-disaster weather : you can't go out, so you waste one day
And four seasons, with different crops to grow and different festivals
occurring. You can't grow crops in Winter, by the way.

What happens when you leave your Chickens out? That's right, wild dogs
will attack them (who else, Old Man Trouble or even the Sandman?) and
reduce their heart level - or just kill them outright. You can always
chase the dogs away with your trusty Hoe and Hammer, but why bother?
Also, it is infuriating to have to whistle at various places on the farm
for your dog or horse.
To solve these two problems, make a protective and limiting enclosure by
using logs from your Lumber Store. Then dump your Chickens or lead your
Horse inside. Be sure to patch your fences up as time goes on; holes
might appear as logs mysteriously disappear :O
As a second precaution against wild dogs, you can leave your (fullygrown) Dog hanging around as well.

Here is a concise guide to the characters and what they like and dislike
(at various degrees). Each character has 6 levels of attitude toward a
particular item. They either favour it, like it, are neutral to it,
dislike it, or hate it. For some reason, they have different things to
say when you give them certain items. This is called the "Misc.", or
miscellaneous, attitude. The character guide of the girls that you can
court (namely Popuri, Ann, Elli, Karen and Mary) are in the Girl Guide.
The reaction of each character has been noted down for almost every item
except recipes (that goes for complex foods like Snowcone, Water, etc. don't ask me why I consider these complex :) ). Here they are:
Adamantite
Apple
Bamboo Shoot
Blue Grass
Bodigizer
Bodigizer XL
Bracelet
Branch
Bread
Cabbage
Carrot

Corn
Cucumber

Magic Red Flower (Red/Blue)

Sweet Potato
Tomato
Toy Flower
Truffle
Turbojolt
Turbojolt XL

Wild Grape
Wine
Wool (Small, Medium, Large, Gold)
Yarn Ball (Small, Medium, Large, Gold)
The reaction for different qualities of certain Farm produce (namely
Wool, Yarn Balls, Milk, Cheese, Mayonnaise, Eggs, Fish) yield the same
reaction throughout. In other words, no character favours Golden goods
over Good goods.

You absolutely have to know where all your stuff is in the Farm. Time
runs very fast, and you have to save every minute. So knowing where your
Barn or your Stable is is very important.
NOTE: The below diagram is not really to scale.

I: Your House
* Purpose *
The House is where you live. It's a bit small at the start, but you may
upgrade it with the help of Gotz.
* Upgrading *
It can be upgraded twice, and each time it will bring some new facility
into the House. More of this will be detailed on in the "Mineral Village
and Mountains" under the Mountains section: Gotz's Area.
II: Henhouse
* Purpose *
The Henhouse stores all your Chickens and your Feed Boxes. In here, wild
dogs cannot attack and kill off your Chickens.
* Upgrading *
Before upgrading, it contains an Incubator, 5 Feed Boxes and 1 Feed
Spout, and you can have a maximum of 5 Chickens. When upgraded, the
Henhouse contains 2 Incubators, 2 Feed Spouts and 10 Feed Boxes. You can
store a maximum of 10 Chickens. Upgrading costs 5,000 G and 420 units of
Lumber.
* Breeding Chickens *
You can breed Chickens by picking up an Egg and putting it into the
Incubator. The Egg hatches in 3 days. Feeding your Chickens is also a
snap; just go over to the Feed Spout, the red thingy in the top left
corner, and press X. You will take out a unit of Chicken Feed (if you
have more than one) and one Chicken needs one unit of Chicken Feed in a
Feed Box. Simply go over to an empty Feed Box and dump in the Feed. To
harvest Eggs, pick them up and dump them into the Bin in the bottom left
corner.
III: Barn
* Purpose *
The Barn is where your Cows and Sheep are stored. In here, wild dogs
cannot attack your livestock.
* Upgrading *
At the start, the Barn has space for 10 livestock; upgrading it adds
another 10 Feed Boxes to the 10 Feed Boxes at the beginning. The Fodder
Spout is on the frontmost wall. You feed your livestock Fodder the same
way you feed your Chickens - dump the Fodder into a Feed Box. Upgrading
the Barn costs 6,800G and 500 units of Lumber.
* Purpose *
When you cut down Tree Stumps or chop up Branches, all Lumber is stored
here automatically.
* Obtaining Lumber *
Stand in front of the store and press the X Button.
V: Stable
The Stable only stores your Horse; nothing more. Your Horse is safe from
natural disasters if you put it in here.
* Purpose *
The Mill is next to your Stream, and is driven by the stream. It stores
Chicken Feed.
* Making Chicken Feed *
By putting in an ear of Corn, you can make 10 units of Chicken Feed
which your Mill supplies to the Feed Spout.
The Stream drives your Water Mill and contains Garbage, Small/Medium
Fish and Branches. You can fish in the Stream.
* Purpose *
If you miss finding the Fertile Field, I suggest you go study Braille.
The Fertile Field is a very large tract of light brown land, which is
useless for planting seeds until you use the Hoe to hoe a plot of land.
* Planting Seeds *
Seeds can only be planted on the hoed, dark brown land on the Fertile
Field; and you can only hoe plots of land on the Fertile Field.
* Weeds, Stones and Rocks *
Weeds grow on random parts of the Field and can also grow in hoed but
unseeded plots of land; get rid of them by pressing X and uprooting
them. Stones appear on the Field from the beginning of the game - get
rid of them by throwing them onto the grass. A few Rocks and Large
Stones are scattered around the field as well; use your Hammer (needs to
be upgraded to at least the Copper level) to smash them. Once they're
cleared, though, weeds will be your only problem.

I: Puppy/Dog
This is the first animal you get in the game. Your Puppy needs 2 seasons
to grow into a Dog, after which you may choose to mate it with Barley's
female Dog (Hana-chan, or Miss Flower in Japanese) to produce Puppies.
* Pleasing your Pet *
You can make your dog happy by giving it a ride; simply pick it up and
put it down. When you get the Dog Ball from Won for 100G after your Dog
is fully grown, you can throw the Ball and the Dog, if nearby and awake,
will run and grab it and come back with the Ball in its jaws.
* Unresponsiveness *
Last thing: your Dog becomes unresponsive and falls asleep after 9 PM,
so make sure you do your training early.
II: Pony/Horse
III: Chicken
* Obtaining Chickens *
You can breed Chickens, or buy one from Lillia for 1,500G. For more
information about breeding Chickens, see the appropriate section below.
* Feeding Chickens *
In order to keep up your Chickens' heart count, you need to feed every
Chicken every day. Go up to the Feed Spout (the red spout at the
northern wall), press X to get a unit of Chicken Feed, then run over to
a Feed Box and press X again to deposit the Chicken Feed into the box.
It doesn't matter which Box you put it in. Each Chicken requires 1 unit
of Chicken Feed, which you can make either by putting Corn into the
Water Mill, or buying 1 unit for 50G at the Chicken Lil's.
* Eggs *
As long as you feed it everyday, each Chicken will produce 1 Egg. The
heart count will increase as well. Quality of Eggs as your Chickens grow
are as follows:
Normal (0 - 3 hearts)
|
Good (4 - 7 hearts)
|- sells for 50 G
Excellent (8 - 10 hearts) _|
Golden (if your Chicken wins the Sumo Chicken Festival) - sells
for 150G
You can check quality of Eggs by pressing the Triangle button with the
Egg selected in the Item menu.
* Breeding Chickens *
You can breed Chickens by putting an Egg into the Incubator and wait 3
days to hatch. Each chick will take a full week to fully grow, but it's
a relatively short time in comparison to other animals...furthermore you
can sell them to Lillia if you're short of money, and simply breed
another one.
IV: Cow
* Obtaining Cows *
You can buy one from Yodel Ranch for 6,000G, or if you already have one,
use a C.M Potion (Cow Magic Potion) from Yodel Ranch for 3,000G to breed
Cows. The pregnant Cow will give birth after 3 weeks, and the new-born
baby calf takes 2 weeks to become a calf, and 2 more weeks to become a
fully grown Cow. You should pregnate only if you have more than 1 Cow,
otherwise stick to saving up; it's much faster.
* Feeding Cows *
The Cow is expensive, but an excellent way to jack up your revenue. Each
Cow requires 1 unit of Fodder everyday to produce Milk on a regular
basis, and you can get Fodder by slicing fully grown, dark green Grass
with the Sickle or buying 1 unit for 20G at Yodel Ranch. Take one unit
of Fodder from the Fodder Spout on the northern wall of the Barn, or
push your Cows outside to chew on the grass when it is fully grown.
* Pleasing Cows *
Besides feeding them, you can talk to them and brush them, both of which
please them immensely. This keeps their heart count from falling.
* Milk *
As long as you feed it everyday, each Cow will produce 1 bottle of Milk.
You need a Milker from Saibara for 2000G to milk the Cow. Quality of
Milk as your Cows grow are as follows:
Normal (0 - 3 hearts) - sell for 100G
Good (4 - 7 hearts) - sell for 150G
Excellent (8 - 10 hearts) - sell for 200G
Golden (must win the Cow Festival) - sell for 300G.
V: Sheep
* Obtaining Sheep *
You can buy a Sheep from Yodel Ranch for 4,000G, or if you already have
one, breed them by using S.M Potion (Sheep Magic Potion). 1 dose costs
3,000G. The Sheep will give birth after 3 weeks, and the newborn Sheep
grows into a fully grown one after 2 weeks.
* Feeding Sheep *
Each Sheep requires 1 unit of Fodder everyday to produce Wool on a
regular basis, and you can get Fodder by slicing fully grown, dark green
Grass with the Sickle or buying 1 unit for 20G at Yodel Ranch. Take one
unit of Fodder from the Fodder Spout on the northern wall of the Barn,
or push your Sheep outside to chew on the grass when it is fully grown.
* Pleasing Sheep *
Once again, talk to or brush your Sheep to make them happy.
* Wool *
As long as you feed it every day, each Sheep will produce one ball of
Wool EVERY WEEK. You need Clippers from Saibara to clip the Wool from
the Sheep. It costs 2,000G. Quality of Wool as your Sheep grow are as
follows:
Normal (0 - 3 hearts) - sell for 100G
Good (4 - 7 hearts) - sell for 400G
Excellent (8 - 10 hearts) - sell for 500G
Golden (must win the Sheep Festival) - sell for 600G.
* Yarn Balls *
With a Yarn Ball Maker, you can toss Wool into the Maker to make Yarn
Balls. They sell for a much higher price. The quality of the Yarn Ball
produced depends on the quality of Wool that you throw in. Normal Wool
produces Normal Yarn Balls, etc. Price of Yarn Balls depending on their
quality are as follows:
Normal - sell for 300G
Good - sell for 700G
Excellent - sell for 800G
Golden - sell for 1000G

Tools are essential for carrying out the farm work. If you've upgraded
your tools and you want to charge your equipped tool (if applicable) to
the respective level, hold down the Square button until your character
looks like the following; then let go! See the Saibara Blacksmith subsection in the Mineral Village and the Mountain section for the
percentage needed to upgrade tools to higher levels.
Here is the list of tools and what they do when charged up.
HAMMER
Smash pebbles and rocks to bits with the hammer. Hit your wife,
child or animals and they won't like it.
Normal
: Raises hammer
|- smash stones
Bronze
Silver
Gold
: Face reddens
|- smash large stones with 1 hit
|- smash rocks with 3 hits
AXE
The Axe chops down tree stumps and chops up Branches for wood. Hit
your wife, child or animals and they won't like it.
Normal
: Raises axe
|- chop Branches (with 1 hit)
Bronze
Silver
Gold
: Face reddens
|- chop Branches (with 1 hit)
|- chop tree stumps with 2 hits
WATERING CAN
The Watering Can is important for making sure your crops get
nourishment. If you water crops every day, you'll get produce
regularly and at the shortest waiting times possible. A full
Watering Can can sprinkle water 100 times, after which you must go
to your pond or river to fill it back up.
Normal
Bronze
Gold
: Face reddens
|- sprinkle water on [3 x 3] plot of hoed soil
SICKLE
Your Sickle is used for easy slicing of weeds, grass or any crops
deemed unnecessary. It will slice even full grown crops, hence you
must watch out when you take your Sickle with you in the fields.
Hit your wife, child or animals and they won't like it.
Normal
: Raises sickle
|- slash 1 plot of grass/weeds/crops
Bronze
Silver
Gold
: Face reddens
|- slash [3 x 3] plot of grass/weeds/crops
HOE
The Hoe is used for mining and hoeing up soil on your Fertile
Field to plant and grow crops for both monetary and food purposes.
Normal
: Raises hoe
|- hoe 1 plot of soil
Bronze
Silver
Gold
: Face reddens
|- hoes [1 x 4] plot of soil in front of you
BASKET
You can take it around the fields with you and dump crops - or
rubbish - into it. That makes crop gathering much quicker, as you can
simply pick up the basket, go over to the bin and hit the Square
button to dump it all. This is the same with Ore.
If you leave your Basket in any Mines - careless bastard aren't you?
:) - you can recover it by going back to the level of the Mine where
you left your basket. If you managed to leave it on the bottommost
level of the Winter Mine on Winter 30th 11:59 PM... :o
__________________________________________________________
BRUSH
The Brush is used for solely one purpose, and that is brushing
your Horse to make it happy. The more times you brush it, the
happier it is with you, but it'll need a lot of brushing to raise
its heart level.
__________________________________________________________
BELL
Ringing the bell will summon any Cows on your field to you.
__________________________________________________________
CLIPPERS
The Clippers are solely for shearing balls of Wool from your
Sheep. Stand near your Sheep and clip!
__________________________________________________________
MILKER
Use this to milk your Cows. Go near your Cows and milk a bottleful
of Milk from them using the Milker.
__________________________________________________________
FISHING ROD/POLE
Stand near a body of water, press and hold the Square button to
cast out the line. When your Fishing Rod wobbles, you've caught
something; release the Square button to haul it up! If you're
lucky, you'll nab a fish; otherwise it'll be a Branch or rubbish.
Fishing Pole is same as the Fishing Rod, except that you have
better chances of catching fish.
__________________________________________________________
CHEESE MAKER
Makes cheese when you toss in a bottle of Milk. The better the
Milk, the bigger the Cheese!
__________________________________________________________
MAYONNAISE MAKER
Makes Mayonnaise when you toss in an Egg. The better the Egg, the
better the quality of the Mayonnaise!

Restore Stamina
``````````````````````````````````
By taking a bath in the Hot Springs, you can restore your stamina
to full (the stamina meter is invisible, but it does drain without
you knowing), if you've used up any by using Tools, etc. Simply go
to the doors of the little stall in front of the Hot Springs and
press the X Button; your character will then enter, change out and
leap into the pool. Bathe for at least 2 hours if your character
has fallen down in exhaustion before, to ensure full restoration
of your stamina.
Mine for Ore
``````````````````````````````````
The Waterfall Mine is right behind the gushing waterfall. It's a
tad difficult to spot, but it's there. The Mine consists of
several floors, each a [10 x 10] plot of soil. Use your Hoe to dig
up plots of soil. Sometimes, you'll get Ores; there are different
types of Ores that can be found in this Mine - Junk, Copper,
Silver, Gold, Mystrile - and the deeper you go, the more valuable
Ores you will be able to dig up.

Use your Hoe to dig up plots of soil. Sometimes, you'll get Ores;
there are different types of Ores that can be found in this Mine Junk, Copper, Silver, Gold, Mystrile, and the rare Adamantite and

A Hell Lot of Flowers
``````````````````````````````````
Okay, so the Flower Field ISN'T the official name, but I named it so
because tons of flowers grow at this particular spot on Mother's Hill.
It's a fantastic source of flowers to use to court your girls!
- In Summer : 15 Pink Cat Flowers (Popuri, anyone?)
* Services *
Moon-viewing
``````````````````````````````````
Every Fall 13th is Moon-Viewing Night, and you can ascend the Hill
and watch the moon with your closest girlfriend/wife.

See the Winter Flower bloom
``````````````````````````````````
Yes, there IS a flower that blooms in Winter. You can't pick it
(it looks suspiciously like an edelweiss), but the viewing of the
flower has a special purpose: you can tell Ellen all about it.
She's always wanted to see the flower before she dies.
There are special requirements to see the flower:
- In Winter season (of course...)
- A snowing day
- After 6 PM
- Hint: if all these requirements match the situation on New
Year's Eve, you're unlucky, because one viewing of the flower is
all you get before you're warped into the next day, thus missing
the festival. Not good.
1. Buying Seeds
The seeds can be bought at the Supermarket. Press X at the packet
of seeds on the counter.
2. Sowing, Growing and Harvesting
The seeds, once bought, are transferred to your toolbox and can be
don't have to walk all the way to the Bin to deposit produce; you
simply dump it into the Basket, and when you finish, go to the Bin
and press the Square button to pour all your produce into the Bin.
6. Reaping the Cash
At 5 pm, Zack will pop by your farm to see if there is anything in
the bin to sell; if there is, he will give you the money, take the
items and leave. If you go to sleep before 5 pm, the money will
still be added to your account in the morning. If there are no
items, then he says "What...nothing today?" and leaves.
If it is a festival day, Zack won't come to collect your stuff.
But the items are still in the Bin the next day.
This is a list of all the normal crops you can find in the game. These
crops are what you can find normally in the game without having to go to
extra means to get, or are just there for a general purpose. This
includes where you can buy the crops, how much is a packet, how much one
crop can be sold for and how much profit you earn per crop. One more
thing...certain crops can regrow after you harvest them, so you save
some money on buying seeds over and over again. Also, as said, the crops
only grow during certain seasons, and NEVER during winter.
The factors I have listed down for each crop are here:
___________________________________________________________________
|Price
- how much one packet costs
|
|Buy at
- where to buy the seed
|
|Growth Time
- the life of the seed before it dies
|
|Harvest Number/season
|
|Re-growth (time)
long?
|
|Selling Price/crop
(Note: when I say "full crop" I mean 9 crops. If you want 8 or 7...do
the calculation :-) Also if the harvest regrows, the profit value will
be multiplied by the number of harvests possible)
Magic Red Flowers are a little bit special from other flowers. For one
thing...most of the Flowers aren't red. They are blue; in fact, I've
seen statistics suggesting the chances of you getting 1 Magic Red Flower
is 1 Red Flower in 3 packets (!). The red Flowers fetch a bit of cash;
however, I'd suggest you don't plant these Flowers. They are expensive,
and are not especially liked by other villagers.
These are the ones you should try going after for after settling down
properly with a good, steady revenue (that should not take much more
Grass is VERY special. For one thing...you don't have to water it and it
grows, and you can walk onto plots of grass. It continues to flourish in
Summer and Fall if you planted it in Spring, and will disappear in
Winter. It grows in two stages; first is short, light-colored grass,
followed by fully grown, dark-colored, long grass. If you have
sufficient grass you can rear your cows and sheep; if Barley takes away
your horse, plant 20 bags of grass and he will give you another pony.
If it is Winter, as mentioned, your grass will not grow, so make sure
you take your sickle and cut down grass in earlier seasons. One "crop"
is one unit of Fodder, which you can feed your livestock during Winter.
Orangecup flowers are next to the worst crops. Besides being a good gift
to girls, they are nothing much. They can only be grown in Hothouses,
which cost a bomb to build. The orange fruit produced by the flowers are
the only things that can be sold, and only at a paltry 60G each. A full
Of course, the recipes you can cook are one of the main highlights of
Harvest Moon - Back to Nature! There are, as I have finally found out,
64 recipes in total, all of which make use of some of the ingredients
which I shall list later.
Cooking is very precise, as it should be. You have to have the necessary
ingredients, seasoning, utensils, as well as the recipe, otherwise you
cannot cook. You may also add in optional ingredients to spice your food
up (like peppers to Pizza during Hot Pot Fest, or Pineapple to your Ice
Cream). The food can then be given to people as a gift.
Of course, you need a Kitchen, which the 1st House Extension can
provide.
After you get the 1st House Extension, your House will have a small
Kitchen. It's at the top right corner of your room; you can't miss it.
To start cooking, go up to the stoves and press the Square button.
1. A panel should pop up, asking you whether you want to:
(i) Follow a Recipe; a list then pops up, showing you a list of
recipes you have heard before, either from other people or
the Delicious Hour.
(ii) Try something new; you may then go straight to select your
Utensils and Ingredients. If you yourself knew the recipe
beforehand, you may attempt to cook it.
(iii) Don't Cook; this message speaks for itself. If you
selected this, don't go on.
2. Another panel pops up, showing what Utensils you have. Select
the required Utensil(s). If you have the Seasonings Set, you
may select it and choose the needed seasonings as well.
3. Yet another panel pops up, revealing what Ingredients you have
in your Icebox. Select the appropriate Ingredients.
4. If you have chosen an existing combination in the game, you
will get a delicious dish. Congratulations! Put it in your
Rucksack/Icebox, consume it, or give it away. If you missed out
something, you'll get a notice "Ugh...it was a failure..." and
you'll get a Food Fiasco.
Occasionally, the villagers like a good party and excuse to relax and
have fun. Festivals are a good way to improve relationships - villagers
respect your sense of responsibility - and some of them are damn fun to
participate in, especially if it's a contest, and even more so when
you're winning a prize.
Oh, and Zack will not come to collect your farm produce on festival
days.
I: New Year Festival, 1st Spring
Time : 6 PM
Venue : Rose Square/Doug's Place
In the first year of your game, you'll just have arrived at the Mineral
Village on the 2nd of Spring, so you'll miss this festival.
But if you're on your second and beyond year, you'll be able to join in
the fun. You may go to one of two locations: Rose Square and Doug's
Place. Rose Square has a bonfire and a dancing session, so if you're
intent on hitting it off with your girl, go there and pick a girl to
dance with. But if you want a more mature environment, you may hit
Doug's Place, where plenty of boozing and partying is going on among the
adults.
On the day of the Festival, if you're good friends with Karen, the girl
of the musical arts (i.e. purple-heart relationship), she'll come to
your house to practice dancing with you.
II: Spring Goddess Festival, 8th Spring
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Rose Square
If you have one or more girls who are good friends with you (i.e.
purple-heart relationship), you may ask to accompany her to the Spring
Goddess Festival on the 7th of Spring (simply talk to her). Once more,
it's good for relationships. On the actual day of the festival, the girl
will come to your house, but if you want you may finish up all your Farm
business before starting off.
The Spring Goddess Festival is held to commemorate the holy presence of
the Harvest Goddess, watching over the village. Flowers are symbolic of
the festival, therefore the whole of Rose Square is adorned in flowers.
At the Festival, you basically do nothing but look at the girls dance in
their Spring Goddess suit. After that, you'll return home at 6 PM. Any
farm business not finished can be finished then.
Time: before 5 PM
Venue : where each girl is
You won't be able to bake Cookies for your girls in the first year
because I bet you won't have the 1st House Extension or the necessary
ingredients by then, unless you cheat.
Although Karen isn't a big fan of Cookies, you have to give one to every
girl. They will like you more. The Cookies recipe:
Ingredients : Flour, Egg, Butter
Utensils
: Rolling Pin, Oven
Seasonings : Sugar
IV: Local Horse Race, 18th Spring
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Rose Square
In your first year, it's unlikely that your Pony would have grown into a
Horse (unless you cheat). Go anyway...but if you do have a full-grown
Horse in other years, though, you may participate.
Betting is optional, but good for your pocket. Where the Mayor sits at a
desk, go over and talk to him. He will then let you choose which Horse
to bet on. Then you will choose how many tickets (1 ticket costs 50G) to
bet on that horse. Exactly which will be the winner I cannot predict;
but most often the most-voted Horse will miss first place by a hair. If
you do participate as a jockey in the Horse Race, you may even bet on
yourself! If you're confident that your Horse is the best, bet as much
as you can! There will be three races in total, so try to win them
all...
Your Horse's speed depends on how much you've been riding it around the
Farm; if you've been doing so, your Horse will be well-trained and stand
a good chance in winning.
Winning your Bet results in you earning tokens called Medals. How many
Medals will you get, if you won your bet? People also bet on the Horses
- the number of bets the other villagers place is the odds. Medal
calculation is like so:
(Odds) x (Your bet ticket number) = Medals
So if you bet 10 tickets on a Horse which has 35 tickets on it, you'll
get 350 medals. These Medals can be redeemed for the following prizes
after each race:
V: Cooking Festival, 22nd Spring
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Rose Square
If you have a Kitchen,
to submit to the Mayor
the dish in your hands
participate by sending
that...
But if you can participate, make sure you use the finest ingredients and
add in as many suitable optional ingredients and Seasonings as you can.
If you're using Eggs/Mayonnaise or Milk/Cheese, you will be almost
guaranteed to win if you use Golden Eggs and Milk.
When you're finished, talk to the Mayor to begin the judging of the
food. The oversized Gourmet will go around tasting the food and giving
remarks. Usually, Ann or Doug will win, because they're the village's
finest cooks. But if you do win, consider yourself of equal calibre.
VI: Swimming Festival, 1st Summer
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Mineral Beach
The Swimming Festival is another competitive festival. Anytime after 10
AM, make a beeline to the Mineral Beach.
You can participate in the Swimming Festival and win a prize. The goal
is to swim as fast as you can and reach the finish line, where Rick
awaits. There are several opponents you will face up against, the
toughest of them all being Kai, the swimming master! He swims fastest of
them all, and you need a special tactic to beat them all.
Once the race starts, you start swimming by tapping the X Button, and
stick your head up and breathe using the Triangle button. Notice that as
you swim, a little speech bubble next to your character displays a face
representing how much breath you have left. The higher up in the 5-step
"breath meter" you are, the faster you will swim.
1. Happy yellow face
2. Frowning dull yellow face
3. Frowning light red face
4. Agonized red face
5. Blue unconscious face
Swimming too long will make you step down the meter until you eventually
hit step 5, when you will stop swimming altogether, because you're
totally exhausted! Here's where breathing comes in. By breathing, your
character slowly makes it up the meter, and you may start swimming
again.
But you can't swim until exhaustion, and then breathe all the back, and
then swim to exhaustion. YOu will start lagging behind the pack. What
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Rose Square
The Sumo Chicken Festival tests how strong and grown your Chickens are;
to participate, you need a Chicken. To win, you need a Chicken with 10
hearts. If you have fed it almost every day and had a Chicken very early
in the game, chances are you'll have a prize-winning Chicken to submit.
The competition consists of three rounds with increasing difficulty. You
are supposed to scare the opposing Chicken away with a powerful stomp
from your Chicken. Press the X Button to make your Chicken stomp. The
more hearts you Chicken has, the more powerful the stomp. You cannot
scare the opposing Chicken away easily if:
1. You stomp before it lands
2. Your Chicken has a few hearts only
So you must jump your Chicken after the opposing Chicken jumps. That
way, your Chicken will miss the impact of the opposing Chicken's stomp
AND make the opposing Chicken feel your stomp. If your Chicken has only
a few hearts, you'll need several tries; but at least your chances of
losing are reduced.
Winning the competition means that your particular Chicken turns into a
Chicken that lays Golden Eggs - each worth 150G. If you participate in
subsequent years' Sumo Chicken Festivals, you cannot send in your prize
Chicken, but you can send in another Chicken with 10 hearts. Winning
subsequent years' competition will increase the number of Golden Egg
Chickens you have.
VIII: Tomato Festival, 12th Summer
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Rose Square
The Tomato Festival has got to be the most fun of competition festivals.
Splattering red tomato matter over your opponents' faces has got to be
the most satisfying thing to do!
When you enter Rose Square, there will be several groups of villagers
standing around. To join a team, talk to one of the villagers in that
team. If you're after a girl, join that girl's team; if you're for
winning, join Ann's team! Elli's team is probably the weakest, at least
that's what I think.
You are pitted against 3 other teams, and you have two team members. You
are supposed to knock out the opposition by striking every opposing team
member with a tomato. Your team members also help by flinging tomatoes.
To throw a tomato, hit the X Button. To control who you are aiming at,
use your direction pad. To hide behind a barrel and avoid getting hit,
you must press the Triangle button. Your teammates also hide
occasionally.
To win, you can either hide until your teammates have taken all the
opponents out, or until all your teammates have been taken out, after
which you can come out a loose a flurry of tomatoes at the remaining
opposition. In that case, you've got to be VERY quick on the hiding and
throwing, because if more than one remaining opposing team member
exists, they will throw tomatoes at you more often, making dodging the
tomatoes harder.
If you win, your team members will respect your skill, and like you
more. If you've got your girl in the team, well, good for you!
IX: Cow Festival, 20th Summer
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Yodel Ranch
If you have a Cow, Barley will come to your Farm on the 19th of Summer
and ask you whether you want to participate. If you're feeling
confident, choose your best Cow and submit it for the judging.
Basically, the Cow Festival tests how well you have kept your Cows. If
you had managed to buy a Cow very early in the game (trust me, this can
get pretty difficult, given that one costs 6000G) and took care of it
everyday, your Cow should have 7 or more hearts. In order for you to
have a good chance to win, 8 - 9 hearts ought to do it. If you have 10
hearts...that's best.
Talk to Barley and he will start the judging of the Cows. If you win,
that particular Cow will produce Golden Milk, worth 300G a bottle!! Like
the Sumo Chicken Festival, you cannot submit prize-winning Cows to
subsequent Cow Festivals, but if anymore Cows win they will, too,
generate Golden Milk.
X: Fireworks Festival, 24th Summer
Time : 6 PM
Venue : Mineral Beach
Fireworks Festival is merely a grand display of bright fireworks. Also,
it's a romantic time to hang out with your girlfriend/wife. At 6 PM,
adjourn to Mineral Beach and pick the girl you want to watch the
fireworks with. You and her will stand on the dock to watch the
fireworks.
After that, you will warp straight into the next day.
XI: Music Festival, 3rd Fall
Time : 6 PM
Venue : Church
On the 2nd of Fall, pastor Carter will turn up at your Farm and ask
whether you want to participate. Say yes ;-) that's the best thing to do
when you want to get along. He will give you the musical ocarina (no,
not to time travel) on the day of the festival itself.
You have to be at the Church at 6 PM, but I've gotten in at 6.10 PM, so
I don't really know when it is closed. Anyway, enter and talk to the
pastor to start the festival. It is really one boring musical
performance (I mean, this is the Playstation after all), but after that,
you will be warped into the next day.
XII: Harvest Festival, 9th Fall
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Rose Square
The Mayor will tell you about the Harvest Festival on the 8th, so
hopefully you've got a crop to throw in. The Harvest Festival is a time
when all the villagers gather around and dump anything into the Hot Pot
cauldron, stew it and serve hot.
So what you dump in when you climb up the ladder and to the Hot Pot all
depends on the success of the food, and how much they will like you
after that. The villagers like Green Peppers best, but Sweet Potatoes
are also pretty good. You can even throw in your Dog or Chicken (neither
of which will be very happy), but the villagers don't do Chinese
cuisine, so neither fits their taste. Anyway, if you're curious, you
will get back your Dog/Chicken.
You can also fish in the Hot Pot, if you equip your Fishing Rod/Pole and
aim well! You will get some very queer things, like garbage (the soup's
always been pretty putrid)...sometimes you will get Small Fish.
XIII: Sheep Festival, 21st Fall
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Yodel Ranch
The Sheep Festival tests
a Sheep, Barley will ask
19th...if you do have an
brushing and feeding it,
Talk to Barley at the Yodel Ranch to start the judging. If you win, that
Sheep will grow Golden Wool, a ball of which sells for 600G!!
XIV: Dog Race, 10th Winter
Time : 10 AM
Venue : Rose Square
By Fall, your Puppy will have become a full-grown Dog, able to
participate in the Dog Race. If you haven't lost it, that is. Zack will
arrive on Day 9 of WInter the ask you about your participation. Well,
you might as well try. If you've been training with the Dog Ball, your
Dog will stand a good chance of winning.
The winner is, of course, the Dog that hits the finish line first. When
you start, hit the Circle button to run. Your Dog will follow you, but
how close you need to be from it to make it run and not walk off depends
on how many hearts your Dog has. The more hearts, the further you can
stay. Run back if your Dog is walking off.
XV: Winter Thanksgiving, 14th Winter
Time : 7 AM
Venue : Your Farm
On the 14th of Winter, stay on your Farm and go outside into the field,
because girls with a purple-heart relationship will come to your Farm
and give you Chocolate, one of the rarest recipes in the game! Those
with blue-heart and above will give you Chocolate Cake. Stash the Cake
in the Icebox (and give it to someone else???) and use the Chocolate for
cooking.
XVI: New Year Eve Festival, 30th Winter
Time : 12 AM
Venue : Top of Mother's Hill
The New Year's Eve festival is on Mother's Hill, and you have to be
there at exactly 12 AM. If you were unlucky enough to see the Winter
Flower (edelweiss) in the day on the 30th of Winter, you will miss this
festival...
When you hit Mother's Hill, everyone will be gathered there to watch the
sunset. Talk to everyone, and end with Saibara. You will then watch the
beautiful sunset (it really is quite scenic, in my opinion) and you will
be warped into the next day, which is the next year...
Day 20, Spring Year 1
======
Zack should have given you your money for your Cucumbers! Also your
Turnips should have fully grown. Don't harvest just yet; you should now
have 3000+G, enough for a medium rucksack. Clean up the farm a mite,
just to burn sometime while you wait for the Supermarket to open. When
it does...rush in and BUY it!! Then get home, bust your butt in storing
three Turnips in the rucksack, and harvest the rest of them. Then grab a
bunch of flowers from the mountain and deliver them to your girl.
Then go back to bed.
(As an extra goodie: when I went to the part of the town with the
church, I saw Rick and Karen talking about going off into the forest
together to look at something. Talk about a peeping Tom :-) )
You will not have anything to submit by then...so you can't participate.
Never mind, there's always next year! Ask the Mayor to start the
judging, and the very fat Gourmet will go around tasting the food.
Usually Doug or Ann will win. But the other people's reply's can be
funny - I talked to Karen, and she lamented that she should not have
added alcohol to every dish (ROTFLMAO!).
At the end of the festival (after the judging), exit the Town Square and
you will return to your farm. Then go to sleep.
Day 30, Spring Year 1
======
Last day of Spring! If you had been following what I have done, then
your last Cucumber plant should have fully grown (the one in the
middle). Hack down one of the outer Cucumber plants with the Sickle and
harvest that Cucumber. Cuddle puppy, brush pony.
(When you exit the farm to go the village, you will see Popuri greet
Kai, then she leaves. Kai then gives you a less-than-modest greeting,
and leaves too.
Then return to your farm, and if you have Elli at a purple-heart
relationship, she will come and give you some sandwiches. You chomp them
down, but they are not so good...oh well.)
Day 9, Summer Year 1
=====
Today is seed shopping day! Hopefully you have enough money, probably
around 800+G by now...water plants, cuddle puppy and brush Pony, and pop
down to the Supermarket and purchase two packets of Onions. When it hits
1 pm, get to the Inn and purchase a packet of Pink Cat Flowers from Won.
Now go home, collect two bunches of Flowers and two sprigs of Red Grass
in your rucksack, followed by mining for one ore, which you give to
Saibara. Give the two bunches of Flowers to Manna, and the Red Grass to
Mary, plant your seeds, and go to bed.
Excellent! You've survived Summer. That wasn't too bad...what with four
Chickens and all...could've done better monetarily...but Fall will be a
blast! Why? Cos' it's gonna be the last season of the year before
Winter. At this time, you should have about 3000+G if you followed
closely enough. Get your ducks up...you also need to brush your Pony at
least 8 - 10 times a day, if you want to jack up its heart count...you
MUST NOT lose this Pony.
Also, Gray has very kindly weeded your Farm for you!
Today, go and mine for a unit of Copper Ore and go to Saibara. Equip
ALLLLL RIIIIGHT! You have gotten through Fall, Year 1! This season, as
you may have noticed, is the Season of Gold, both in color and
literally. At the start, you planted several regrowable crops, both of
which regenerated in about 3 days, providing you with a steady stream of
income. You should have saved mountains of this income, and have about
10,000G by now! However, you should also have noticed that harvest time
also strains your time hanging out with the villagers. Nevertheless, I
have tried to help you in squeezing some spare time out. You might also
have noticed that I left out a significant event or two, both by mistake
and on purpose, like Moon-View Festival, and Karen's Birthday. If you
did remember these, well, good for you!
The next season is the last season in the year, and it is Winter. This
is going to be tougher on your pocket - you will have spend minimally on
your girls, and not splurge too much on luxuries for them. Flowers, like
crops, certainly will NOT tolerate sub-zero temperatures, but if you
saved them up in your Rucksack last season (clever boy), you can give
them the Flowers.
So, as I said, no monetary stream via crop harvests, 'cos there will not
be any crops to speak of. You WILL have your Cows' Milk, as well as your
Chickens' Eggs, and your bottle of Honey per day, so that will bring in
some economic assurance. Nevertheless, as I must emphasize, DO NOT
SPLURGE.
Also, you gotta have to brush and talk to your Pony 15 - 20 times per
day, and give your Dog a ride as well as toss the Dog Ball to it 15 - 20
times per day. It is time-consuming, and I am sorry I have to rush you
like this, but it is the only way to jack up their heart values.
Good luck on Winter - you are going to need it!
IV: Winter
day, and putting it out in the fields during a sunny day. You must jack
up your horse's hearts by putting it out on a sunny day and brushing it
15 - 20 times everyday. Also, harvest a pot of Honey, 5 Eggs and a
bottle of Milk.
But I got hit by a snowstorm today ;-) Go to bed.
New Year Eve Festival
0G
0G
SO! You have survived for one Year! That is amazing (at least if you are
new), no? You should have a decent amount of money in your pockets and
livestock in your Barn and Henhouse with relatively good feelings
towards you. Your Pony, by the end of this year, should also have 7
hearts (at least), if you have been brushing it as consistently and as
often as you can. If not, Barley will take it back...and it's a great,
great loss.
By this end of this year, your Farm percentage should well exceed 20%.
If it hasn't, well, you had better catch up very fast.
Next year will be even better! Keep your spirits up!
New Year Eve Festival
0G
0G
Thought you'd never see the time when you got through another year? Well
you did, even if you are a newbie! You now have 5 fully grown Cows, plus
three Sheep, and a Henhouse full of 10 Chickens!! This year was more or
less slightly better than last year, and it can only get better next
year...
Your Barn is getting full - as I have promised, you will upgrade it
soon. As for your wife, all in good time - don't worry. First worry
about getting the second House Extension. Your targeted girl should
by now, at least yellow heart. If it's at orange heart, better, you
worry less; red heart, you're obviously quite insane, but well done
just keep it at that level.
very
be,
can
-
Your pocket should have a hefty enough amount of cash - probably about
between 10,000 G and 20,000G I'd say. You will need it of course. Your
Farm should have a percentage of more than 40% by now - or even at 50%
if I am wrong. Worry not! Take care of your livestock! Good luck for
next year - it's my last year guiding you!
you can play on for an indefinite time...
Power Berries are rather tough to find, but are worth it in the long
run, because they increase your stamina. This means that you may drink
less water, eat less and waste less time in the Hot Springs.
After an intensive search I have uncovered 10 berries, plus the Kappa
Berry, which DOUBLES your stamina.
1. Plant 90+ Flowers (99 Flowers is a safe bet, as I had to plant about
95 Moon Drop Flowers to get Anna's attention). Once they all bloom, Anna
will pop by your farm, be delighted, and give you a Power Berry!
2. After 5 PM on a Sunday, pack in 5 types of crops and go to the
Waterfall on the Mountain. Stand behind the Waterfall and fling a crop
in; the goddess will appear in all her pomp. Throw in 4 more crops and
she will bestow upon you a Power Berry.
3. The TV Shopping Network sells a Power Berry for 5000G.
4. You can purchase a Power Berry from the Mayor's stand at the Horse
Race, if you have 1001 medals.
5. If you win the Swimming Festival on 1st Summer, you will be awarded a
Power Berry.
6. Fishing in the ocean will bag you one, if you're lucky.
7. There's one somewhere in the Waterfall Mine. It pops up like an Ore
when dug up by your Hoe.
8. There's one somewhere in the Winter Mine. It pops up like an Ore when
dug up by your Hoe.
9. There is a tree stump near a bridge, just before the area containing
many Flowers (which is the area just before the peak of Mother's Hill).
If you have a Copper Axe, attempt to chop it up; it will beg you not to,
and if you choose "Do Not Chop" you will get a Power Berry. Talk about
blackmail :/
10. You can walk behind the entrance of the Winter Mine. Examine around
that area for a Power Berry.
11. KAPPA BERRY
Chef gives you this bit of info, if he is good friends with you (8
hearts+). Pack in three Cucumbers and go to the lake where the Winter
Mine is. Stand your character in front of the two adjacent trees on the
leftmost portion of the lake and throw the Cucumbers into the lake. A
Kappa will pop up and give you a special berry!
