The Masters in Computer Science will offer a

new programme from September 2015. While
the new programme is still under construction,
this flyer will provide you with a brief overview.
For the latest updates about the programme we
refer you to the website:
www.cs.msc.tudelft.nl

The richness and importance of the

information conveyed by data has led to a
rapid increase in the influence of data on
individuals and society.
Data of various kinds, such as the enormous data collections on
the internet, has become omnipresent in virtually all aspects of
our society. For example, by analysing the data available from
past negotiations we can now predict our opponents behaviour
in future negotiations. Digital data has become the key to
innovations that show promise in relation to the progress of
humanity in critical societal domains, such as energy, economy,
health or climate, as well as in science, such as in bio-informatics
or web science.

Masters programme
The TU Delft Masters in Computer Science programme
offers you the opportunity to become a computer science
specialist in your favoured field within the wide spectrum of
computer science. The Masters provides two tracks: the
Software Technology track if you wish to design, redesign,

and or maintain complex software systems and the Data

Science & Technology track if you are inspired to explore how
best to analyse and interact with large amounts of data. It is
also possible to create an individual programme which
combines these two tracks.
If you choose the Data Science & Technology track you will
learn how to engineer systems in which (extremely) large data
collections are the key component. You will gain the knowledge
to develop and deploy algorithms to collect and analyse data.
You will learn how to present data in a meaningful and
transparent format and to support decision-making on the basis
of that data. For example, you will learn how to detect patterns
in gene-data, visualise the inner workings of a patient to
support diagnosis, develop lifestyle change programmes to
improve health, or extract user behaviour from web logs.

sophisticated algorithms to support diagnosis, 3D-imaging

techniques to visualise medical data sets, and to develop
long-term buddies to help patients in establishing and
maintaining healthy behaviours.

Network Science concerns the study of the web and

other complex networks, as well as the people who use them
and generate data on them. You will learn how data from
networks can be used for networked information systems.
You will also learn to develop techniques for analysing network
data, for user modelling, and for user-adaptive and
personalised systems that operate in complex networks such as
the web

This Masters programme will allow you to become a Data

Scientist, a highly desired skill-set at prestigious universities
and companies across the world. TU Delft has great pride in
producing graduates with a profound understanding of Data
Science technologies and the computer science skills to apply
them. The Data Science & Technology track is open to students
with a sufficient background in computer science.

Research themes
The Data Science & Technology track gives you a broad basis in
computer science and in-depth knowledge in a theme of
personal interest. These themes of interest will be connected to
the research strengths of the Delft Computer Science faculty
members who are available as thesis advisors. The curriculum
is set up with a large degree of freedom: you can create your
own specialised programme in agreement with your thesis
advisors. Some examples of research themes in which you can
specialise are:

Crowd sourcing

concerns efficient and effective human

engagement in collecting, sharing and analysing the wealth of
information available from people and sensors in our society.
You will learn to develop crowd sourcing techniques that
improve our understanding of societal phenomena related to,
e.g., mobility, environment & sustainability, and social life. You
will also learn to present the data to the user in a meaningful
and transparent way.

Multimedia information retrieval provides users

with intelligent access to large collections of multimedia
content and offers a wide array of methods for extracting
traces of knowledge from large-scale resources (which are
potentially unstructured). You will learn how to index
large-scale content collections and provide effective and fast
search, retrieval and recommendation interface
Health support systems concerned with
behaviour-change systems and the unlocking of medical data
that plays a vital role in the diagnosis of disease, treatment,
health care and healthy living. You will learn to develop

Gain knowledge to
develop and deploy
algorithms to collect and
analyse data

Career prospects
TU Delft has close ties with industry. During your studies you
will have the opportunity to contact companies and build a
network. In addition to internships and thesis projects you can
also develop contacts with companies via the EEMCS
recruitment days or the TU Delft technical career fair.
The job prospects of our computer science graduates are
excellent. With their specialised understanding of techniques to
collect and analyse data, to present data in a meaningful and

transparent format, and to support decision-making, Data

Science & Technology engineers are among the most desired
employees in leading industries and universities.
Due to the growing recognition of our students skill sets, TU
Delft Computer Science graduates have accepted positions at
IT oriented firms such as Philips, TNO, Oc and Logica. Others
have been offered positions in the health care industry, as well
as with multimedia and gaming companies, including such firms
as Lost Boys, Green Dino, Cyclomedia, Code Illusions and
Triumph Studios, and life-science support companies.

A highly acclaimed computer science research programme

My name is Catalin Stanculescu and Im in my second year of the MSc in Computer Science
programme at TU Delft and a one of the universitys student ambassadors.
I was drawn to TU Delft by its highly acclaimed computer science research programmes,
the number of foreign students attending the university and the good value for money it
provides. I chose the MSc in Computer Science because of the mix of subjects the
programme offers and my long-held passion for programming combined with my interest
in artificial intelligence.
As a second-year student, Im writing my graduation thesis at IBM Netherlands, where
I research enterprise gamification as an effective way to encourage learning and social
activeness by employees in the community. IBM is a great company for such a research
project because of its size, resources and collective expertise. I came into contact with
IBM via the Extreme Blue internship. During this programme, my team worked for a
governmental client to tackle a Big Data challenge.
On an average day, I spend 68 hours working on my thesis, either at TU Delft or at IBM
in Amsterdam. When Im not working on my thesis, I go to periodic meetings related to
the Ambassadors Programme and occasional meetings related to my assistantship
position at TU Delft.

Dutch BSc degree

Please visit the webpage for all

details, complete requirements,
deadlines and contact information:

In most cases, if you hold a BSc degree, closely related

to the Computer science Masters programme, you will
be admitted directly into the programme. However, if
your undergraduate programme is not closely related to
the Masters programme you will be required to take
additional courses in what is called a bridging
programme.
Applications through Studielink: tudelft.studielink.nl

Dutch HBO degree

An HBO Bachelors degree does not qualify you for
direct admission to the TU Delft Computer Science
Masters programme. You will first need to complete a
bridging programme which you can start during your
HBO programme via a bridging minor, or by means of a
bridging programme after completing your HBO
diploma. Entrance requirements for mathematics and
English (some exceptions) apply for both the bridging
minor and the bridging programme. See
www.hbodoorstroom.tudelft.nl for detailed information.
