Springville PTO gets boost with new fundraiser

Boosterthon
brings excitement
to students, raises
money for PTO
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
For many school parentteacher organizations in South
Jersey, fundraising consists of
selling food such as candy and
pies or holding a book fair.
However,
the
PTO
at
Springville Elementary School is
trying something no other school
in South Jersey has done before.
Springville is wrapping up a
two-week PTO fundraiser called
Boosterthon. The fundraiser
bucks the trend of having kids
sell items and focuses more closely on the students.
(Boosterthon)
promotes
fundraising in a different way,
said Marlene Bollar, the PTOs
vice president for fundraising.
Boosterthon is more than a
fundraiser. Its a two-week program where a team of Boosterthon representatives holds a
pep rally and has daily team activities for each class in the
school. These activities focus on
character building and giving the
students leadership skills.
It builds on the character education programs we already
have, Springville Principal

Gailen Mitchell said.

For the fundraising aspect,
each participating student has a
Boosterthon webpage where they

can get pledges from family and

friends. The webpage is easy to
through email. Donors make

pledges and can choose to donate

to the fundraiser through the
page.
Boosterthon culminates in a

Fun Run, which took place on

Still time to support YMCA

Gobbler Giving fundraiser
According to Feeding America,
one in seven Americans, more
than 46 million people, rely on
food pantries and meal service
programs to feed themselves and
their families. This year, the
YMCA of Burlington and Camden Counties is giving back to
those who need it most through
its inaugural Gobbler Giving
event.
During the month of November, feathers will be available to
purchase for $1, $5, $10 or $20
from the welcome center at the
Mt. Laurel YMCA. Feathers can
be decorated and will be used to
decorate turkeys on display at
each location.
Proceeds from the purchase of
feathers will go directly toward
providing holiday dinners for the
families of the YMCAs Womens
Opportunity Center to ensure
that everyone can have a happy

and healthy holiday season.

The Women's Opportunity Center assists women who have lost
financial support due to separation, divorce, death or disability
of a spouse and is committed to
help women gain economic selfsufficiency through education,
job readiness, networking, outreach, referrals and emotional
support. The center also promotes awareness of women's
rights and issues through public
advocacy.
Donations can be made by purchasing a feather at the YMCAs
Mt. Laurel Welcome Center.
Feathers of $10 or more may be
purchased online at www.ymcabc.org.

LRHSD Pathways to Engineering

pilot program to expand
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Some freshmen at Lenape and
Seneca became the first students
in the Lenape Regional High
School District to hop on the pathway to engineering this year.
Next year, students at Shawnee
and Cherokee will be able to join
them.
The board of education approved a grant from Lockheed
Martin for $31,200 at last weeks
meeting that will allow the district to expand its Pathways to
Engineering pilot program to all

four high schools.

With this grant, we'll finally
get to expand (the program) to
Shawnee and Cherokee next
year, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said. This is the second
consecutive year that Lockheed
Martin is helping us with a
grant.
Last year, Lockheed Martin donated an identical $31,200 grant to
help get Pathways to Engineering
off the ground at Lenape and
Seneca.
This partnership opportunity
provided by Lockheed Martin has
enabled us to add a rigorous

STEM program to our course offerings, said director of curriculum and instruction Heather Xenakis. Its a fantastic opportunity for all of our districts highly
motivated students interested in
engineering to understand, in application, the content learned in
science and math courses.
The Pathways to Engineering
program comes from Project
Lead the Way, a nonprofit company providing STEM-related classes and activities to schools
around the country.

This holiday season, support local businesses

Dan McDonough Jr.

is the season, as they say. Tis

the season to be jolly. Tis the
season to bundle up and drink
hot chocolate. Tis the season to spend
extra time with loved ones. Tis the
season to start your holiday shopping if you havent already. And tis
the season to shop local.
This week marks the official start to
the holiday shopping season, but if
youve been out and about this month,
you have noticed holiday decorations
and specials at stores throughout our
area.
Much of the attention of the holiday
shopping season falls on two days
Black Friday and, now, Cyber Monday but dont forget to shop local for
your holiday gifts.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the region, has immense benefits on the

local economy.
Even companies as large as American Express are touting the importance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Last year, a study reported an estimated $5.7 billion was
spent at small businesses on that day!
A vibrant and successful local business community has a trickle-down effect on our own pockets. Just think:

Successful local businesses make

other businesses want to locate in our
town.
More businesses equals more ratables, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attractive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, support your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
fighting an uphill battle against the
marketing dollars of the big box
stores.
Lets all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.

Turf field fundraising campaign underway

Lenape Athletic Foundation hoping to raise $1 million for high school stadium
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
For many years, Lenape parent Geri
Alfinito could frequently be seen at Lenape
sporting events. Alfinitos four children
were participants on Lenape sports teams.
My wife was a huge supporter of the
sports program, said her husband Tom.
She was a supporter of the kids.
When Geri passed away suddenly in 2011
at the age of 47, Tom began to look for a
way to honor her.
A short time later, the Lenape Turf Project was born.
The Lenape Athletic Foundation has
begun a fundraising campaign to install

turf at Lenapes Driscoll Stadium.

Fundraising began in November after the
Lenape district board of education and
high school administration approved the
project.
The plan is to name the turf field after
Geri. Having a turf field at Lenape was
something Tom talked to Geri about for a
number of years.
We talked about it all the time, he said.
I thought itd be a great way to honor her.
Parents of current and former Lenape
students have come together to form an executive committee, which has already connected with LandTek Group and FieldTurf
to get estimates on the cost of the project.
Lori Leonard, a member of the execu-

tive committee, said the project will cost

approximately $1 million. The committee
is hoping to raise $740,000 in cash and
$260,000 in material and services. The
goal is to raise the money in time for the
turf to be installed during the summer of
2016.
The entire project will be funded privately. Executive committee member Stuart Yaffa said the school district is not able
to help pay for the turf field. However, he
noted both Shawnee and Cherokee high
schools were able to install turf using private donations. He also said Medford and
Evesham have fewer residents than Mt.

Success with Learning Disorders

By Carlo B. Melini, MD FAAP
Website - www.CarloBMeliniMD.com
All students need success. It has been said that success is like vitamins, we all need some. Some
students however fail to achieve the success they deserve. Subtle and sometimes overt differences in
learning patterns can create havoc for a student in school. The most common neurodevelopmental
dysfunction involves the Attention System. This is the Chief Executive Officer of the brain. It directs
by promoting, inhibiting, assisting and controlling all that we learn, remember, listen to and produce.
No one has inattention for everything. Rather, it is inattention for those things that are boring or difficult to understand. On the other hand, attention for things we really enjoy and care about may never
be stronger. So it is really a misnomer to call someone Attention Deficit; rather it should be labeled
Misdirected Attention.
Often, individuals with this affliction are extremely creative and can become very successful adults
when they can practice their specialty- do what they like. Although traditional past research did not
incriminate sugar and foods as causative of inattention or increased activity, more recent research suggests that the artificial dyes and preservatives, found in many foods today, can worsen the condition,
and should be avoided. Recent research confirms that exercise can be especially beneficial in improving
attention. Sitting still all day hinders the ability to sustain attention. Schools that provide regular exercise at the beginning of the day and throughout the day have students with very little Attention
Deficit!
Associated with at least 90% of students with attentional issues are learning differences. They may
involve sequencing, fine motor, language, organization or memory. They may be subtle and not readily
recognized without appropriate evaluations. These are students with normal to gifted intelligence; yet,
if not recognized and by-passed early, may fail to achieve commensurate with their intelligence. The
three main categories of learning disorders include: Dyslexia (Reading) 80% Dyscalculia (Math) 10%
and Dysgraphia (Writing) 10%. Each, if recognized early, can be mastered and overcome!

Attending school heralds the end of the protection and nurture of home life. During a typical day
at school, students experience successes and failures, many resulting in future feelings of self-worth
and self-esteem. Lets not blame students as lazy unmotivated or immature. Rather, lets make
sure they are properly evaluated where strengths and weaknesses in the various domains needed for
learning are determined. Only then will we stop the cycle of failure and lack of success that plague too
many students.

If they can do it, why cant

The focus of the fundraising is
going to be on families with children in the Mt. Laurel School District. Leonard said many current
Lenape parents will not get to see
their kids play on the field.
Leonard herself no longer has
kids at Lenape, but said she is motivated to help improve the school
community and make the facilities better for future student-athletes.
I love the sport of lacrosse,
she said. Our kids should have
the same comparable fields to the
other schools.
The turf field will be used for
football, soccer, field hockey and

lacrosse. The committee is hoping

to connect with Mt. Laurels
youth athletic organizations in
those sports to encourage parents
to fundraise. Leonard noted the
township already has turf fields
for its programs and expects support from the community.
The feeder programs already
play on a turf field, she said.
Transition to a grass field doesnt make sense.
The turf project is operating
under the umbrella of the Lenape
Athletic Foundation. To help with
fundraising, the foundation is
planning multiple events.
A gala is being planned for
next year, and Yaffa said the committee is looking at other
fundraising events, such as a golf
outing.
So far, the fundraising effort is
off to a strong start. The turf
project has already received
$10,000 thanks to a donation from
Group One Automotive. They are

hoping other local businesses will

also help the project.
Yaffa said there is a plan to create a wall at Driscoll Stadium displaying the names of the donors.
For everyone involved, this is
more than just a fundraiser. Its a
community coming together to
support their kids.
This is going to be a fun project, Tom said. Its something for
the entire community.
Donations can be mailed to
Lenape Athletic Foundation/
Turf, 235 Hartford Road, Medford
NJ 08055. The committee has also
set up a website, www.
lenapeturf.com, where residents
will be able to make a donation
online. Lenape Turf also has a
Facebook page where the latest
news on the project will be posted.

Boosterthon is a completely
new concept for everyone involved. Springville is the first
school in South Jersey to participate in the program.
The PTO opted to do Boosterthon in place of multiple smaller fundraisers. In the smaller
fundraisers, the PTO only kept 10
percent to 15 percent of the
money raised. With Boosterthon,
it will keep 45 percent.
It is far better than most other
fundraisers, Bollar said.
The other positive aspect is in
the character-building activities.
Mitchell said the students are
more attentive during Boosterthon activities, and it helps gets

Holiday Bazaar
set for Dec. 6
Countryside Schools Holiday
Bazaar is returning for 2014. The
event will be held on Saturday,
Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Local crafters and home
demonstrators will be on hand to
sell their goods. There will also be
health and wellness vendors,
games and face painting for the
kids, and raffles with door prizes.
The Countryside PTO is bringing back the bazaar after running
it many years ago. The PTO hopes
to recreate memories of past
bazaars for all children while also
supporting local vendors.
Admission to the bazaar is free.
For more information, contact
Danielle Seidelmann at dseidelmann14@gmail.com.
Proceeds
from the event will go toward

their message across better.

Ryan Arnold, one of the members of the Boosterthon team,
said they used music, video and
fun physical activities to get the
kids interested.
Its all about building character in the classroom, he said.
Its built with enthusiasm and a
dialogue.
Boosterthon fundraisers have a
different theme for each school
year. This year, students got to
view music videos and learn
songs. The videos helped teach
the students how to be an upfront
leader and work together with
their classmates.
The lesson is all about teamwork and how to be a leader on
campus, Arnold said.
The message has gotten across
to the students and has spread
outside the school walls. Mitchell
said shes received feedback from

parents on how their child has applied the character-building skills

learned during Boosterthon activities.
The character building has
also increased excitement in the
fundraising aspect. Bollar said
about 80 percent of the student
body signed up to fundraise on
Boosterthon, nearly double the
number of fundraisers from previous years. In addition, about 70
percent of students have gotten at
least one pledge.
While the PTO doesnt have
concrete numbers as of yet, Bollar believes smaller fundraisers
may be a thing of the past, since
Boosterthon resulted in more participation and allows the PTO to
keep more of the money raised.
Our goal is to have a major
fundraiser in the fall and one in
the spring instead of several
smaller events, Bollar said.

NOV. 26DEC. 2, 2014 THE MT. LAUREL SUN 19

Course will start in fall 2015

COURSE
Continued from page 4

In the first year of the program, students at Lenape and

Seneca are participating in an Introduction to Engineering course
where they are introduced to the
subject.
Mike Condurso, the instructor
for the first class at Lenape this
year, explained the students are
learning the engineering process
so they will be able to succeed in
future courses.
Theyre using the engineering
design process, which is similar
to the scientific process, Condurso said. Theyll be keeping an engineering notebook.
The students are also participating in their first engineering
projects that are meant to emulate the same thought process engineers use in the real world.
Already this year, students at
both schools have made a number

of projects. One is a device called

a fling machine. The machine is
made out of balloons, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, paper clips and
aluminum foil, and is designed to
launch a cotton ball as far as possible.
Another project students have
worked on is a miniature cable
car. The car is made up of rubber
bands, cardboard tubes, tape and
a plastic propeller. Students were
asked to move the car with a figurine inside along a thin strand of
fishing line.
Students participating in the
program will move on to more advanced courses in the coming
years. During their senior year,
the classes will be equivalent to
college-level courses.
Its modeled after a senior engineering experience at the college level, Condurso said. They
will partner with a mentor in
business and industry.
The Pathways to Engineering
program will be open to Shawnee
and Cherokee freshmen beginning in the fall of 2015.
