Note: Prior to making a DuZinc 019 zinc plating bath, the process tank
must be cleaned thoroughly for a minimum of 24 hours with 5% HCl.
*Note: Total Chloride Range for Mixed Bath: 16-21 oz/gal of total
chloride ion should be maintained depending on the zinc metal
concentration. 16 oz/gal is recommended for zinc values of 1-3 oz/gal and
18-21 oz/gal is recommended for zinc values of 3 and over. The total
chloride ion can be controlled by adding a mixture of 80% by weight
potassium chloride and 20% by weight ammonium chloride. Two ounces
per gallon of this mix will yield one ounce per gallon of chloride ion. If
preferred, a premixed additive PAM chloride may be used to supply both
chlorides in their proper ratio.

6. SOLUTION CONTROL
A.

Zinc Determination
1. Pipette a 2 mL sample into a clean 250 or 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask.
Rinse down the inside of the flask with distilled water and dilute to about 75 to 100 mL.
2. Add about 10 mL of analytical grade Ammonium Hydroxide and a small pinch (about the
volume of a large grain of rice) of Eriochrome Black T Indicator powder.
3. Titrate with 0.1 Molar Di-Sodium EDTA to an end point that changes from purple to a lasting
pale blue color.
mL x 0.434 = oz/gal zinc (as metal)

B.

Total Chloride Determination

1. Pipette a 1.0 mL sample into a clean 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask. Rinse down the inside of the
flask with distilled water and dilute to about 100 ml.
2. Add about 3-6 drops of 10% neutral Sodium Chromate Indicator Solution and titrate with 0.1
Normal Silver Nitrate to a reddish-buff endpoint
mL x AgN03 x 0.473 = oz/gal total chloride ion

C.

Boric Acid Determination

1. Pipette a 5 mL sample into a clean 500 ml Erlenmeyer flask. USE NO WATER. Slowly pour
in as a rinsedown, about 10 mL of 100 g/L Potassium Ferrocyanide to precipitate the zinc.
Add about 1 ml of Bromo Cresol Purple Solution and then add, with swirling, increments of dMannitol to make a slushy paste.
2. Titrate with 0.5 Normal Sodium Hydroxide to a blue endpoint
ml x Normality x 0.825 = ox/gal boric acid

7. OPERATING TIPS
Potassium chloride used in making up and replenishing DuZinc 019 baths must not contain any
harmful or organic additives.
Only high purity grade zinc chloride should be used. DuZinc 019 baths replenished with low
grade chemicals will not perform properly.
DuZinc 019B (brightener) is consumed at the rate of 1 gal/20,000AH.
DuZinc 019W (wetter) is only consumed by drag out. In barrel operations, the DuZinc 019
wetter to brightener replenishment additions should be maintained at 2:1 to1:1 while for rack
applications, the DuZinc 019 wetter to brightener replenishment additions should be maintained
at 1:3.
Bath pH should be maintained between 4.8 and 6.0. Technical grade hydrochloric acid should be
used to lower the pH and potassium and ammonium hydroxide should be used to increase the
pH.
The major contaminant in all chloride zinc plating baths is iron. This contamination is normally
controlled by the use of air agitation along with solution filtration. Addition of 1 to 2 quarts of
hydrogen peroxide per 1,000 gal to the plating tank is recommended to aid in the removal of
soluble iron in the bath.
Analyze the bath frequently so that it remains in chemical balance and avoid large addition of
chemicals at any time to restore solution balance. Always analyze and adjust the zinc and
chloride contents before adding DuZinc 019 brightener and wetter.
PREPLATE TREATMENT
A general cleaning and pickling cycle is recommended as follows:
1. Hot alkaline soak clean; e.g., CLEPO 644-L
2. Hot alkaline electroclean (anodic); e.g., CLEPO 601 SXL
3. Rinse
4. Hydrochloric acid pickle
5. Rinse
6. Acid zinc plate
Variations of this cycle are also available. Contact your Gumm representative for a survey of the
line and optimization of the pretreatment cycle.
POST PLATE TREATMENT
DuZinc 019 deposits have excellent chromate receptivity. In order to ensure the highest
corrosion resistance, the use of CLEPO PK-3 (blue bright trivalent chromate) or DuChrome
554-L (yellow) is recommended.

5. Low temperature
1. Low brightener concentration
2. Low chloride content
3. Very high temperature
4. High zinc metal
5. High pH
1. Excessive anode sludge
2. Ripped anode bag
1. Iron contamination (treat with hydrogen
peroxide)
2. Cu,Pb, Cd contamination (dummy bath of
zinc dust treat)
3. Contaminated bright dip
1. Chromium contamination (treat with
