Provision of the MTP act :a.) When pregnancy involves serious risk of life
or grave injury to physical and mental health
of pregnant woman
b.) Eugenic conditions :- Serious congenital

rape, both in cases of major and minor girls

Certain psychiatric disorder

early pregnancy
Rubella infection in first trimester.

Recommendation :

A registered medical practitioner is qualified to


perform MTP if
One has assisted in at least 25 MTPs in an
authorized Centre
One has 6 month house surgeon training
in obstetrics and gynaecology
One has diploma or degree in obstetrics
and gynaecology
Termination can only be performed in hospitals
established or maintained by government or
places approved by government
Pregnancy can only be terminated on the written
consent of woman. Husbands consent is not
required
Pregnancy in a minor girl lunatic cannot be
terminated without consent of parents or legal
guardians
Termination is permitted upto 20 weeks of
pregnancy. When pregnancy exceeds 12 weeks,
opinion of two medical practitioners is required.
The abortion has to be performed confidentially
and to be reported to the director of health
