Anti-wear alloy

Eutectrode 6 HSS
For punching tools and dies

Description
High speed steel type deposits
Superior edge retention
Excellent cutting, shaving and
piercing qualities
Deposits are heat treatable
EutecTrode 6HSS . produces deposits of the high speed
steel type for applying cutting edges to composite high
speed tool steel components. Also suitable for providing
cutting edges on carbon and low alloy steels.
Deposits contain a range of elements giving a compatible
high speed steel type structure, with excellent edge
retention, very good toughness and abrasive resistance.
Deposits in the as-welded condition are of high hardness,
and therefore components can be ground to required
dimensions and placed into immediate service, if heat
treatment is not required.

Technical Data
Hardness (as deposited) (RC):...............58- 62
(VPN):............ 653-746
Heat Treatment (C):

For small and delicate components quench in vvarm oil
(120'C) to avoid distortion.
Electrode identification

Applications
Punch tools, planking piercing dies knives, forging dies,
special boring tools.

Procedure for use

Preparation
Ensure that all areas to be joined are free trom con
taminants, oxides, damaged and fatigued base material and
remove sharp edges and corners.
Components to be welded with edge cutting action should
preferably be prepared employing a "J" preparation,
dimensions will depend upon type and size of repair.
For flat surface repairs ensure that the area to be welded is
clean and free from contaminants and sufficient room exists
to achieve sound penetration.

Preheating
Preheating temperatures will depend upon the composition
of the base material. As a general guide preheating between
150C - 450C will be necessary.
It is important that parts be preheated slowly and uniformly,
and that sufficient soaking time be allowed, this period of
time will depend upon the thickness of the material.
Welding
Preheat electrodes before use to 100C in a small oven for
best results. Select lowest possible amperage settings in
order to minimise weld metal dilution. Employ as short an
arc length as possible and a near vertical electrode angle.
Deposit as stringer beads (avoid weaving) limiting to a
maximum of two layers in depth, avoid local overheating by
employing a balanced welding technique. Limit each weld
bead to between 25-75 mm (1"-3") followed by slag removal
and thorough wire brushing.
For heavy build-ups, deposit intermediate layers using
EutecDur N6200,v or Xuper 686,- however if post heat
treatment is required EutecDur N6200 only.
During welding operations preheating must be maintained,
on completion of the build up cooling should be slow and
even until room temperature has been reached. Alternatively,
if post heat treatment is required transfer the component
immediately into a heat treatment facility without loss of
heat.
Post Heat Treatment
Post heat treatment, if required, will depend upon type, size
and composition of the base material. Further technical
advice should be requested.

Storage and handling

Safely stack and store electrodes in a dry location to avoid
humidity pick up or coating damage. Should electrodes
become damp, the following re-drying conditions before use
are recommended: C / hr.
Safety
During mixing and application, the use of protective gloves
is recommended.
Avoid contact with eyes and skin. In case of accidental
contact, clean affected area with soap and water. Do not
swallow.
Seek medical advice at the first sight of prolonged effects.
Adequate ventilation of the workplace is recommended.
