Genre Analysis
Everyone has different expectation when they hear a new movie streaming in
theaters. Movies in general have the same purpose, which is to entertain a specific
audience up until each individual movie has a certain topic or interest unlike the rest to
only grasp the attention of a selected few. Lets take a closer look at a specific movie
genre such as Sci-Fi Thrillers. Its convention would be suspense, tension, excitement,
adventure, special effects, visionary, danger, and alertness. Yes this particular genre has a
lot to offer when making a movie but the distinction on how to make it connect together
is where the true masterpiece comes from. Movies overall have a balance of how much
detail from each convention should be used throughout the movie to fully satisfy the
audience.
The purpose of these Sci-Fi Thriller movies is to bring the audience a new world
experience. Throughout various scenes the audience feels a connection that brings them
some sort of adrenaline rush from the action, stress from the character decisions, and
excitement from the overall plot of the movie. A perfect movie that contains all this
would be Inception that came out in 2010. This Sci-Fi Thriller was based upon the idea
of gathering information from a person through dream sharing technology and to plant
certain ideas to a CEO of a big corporate business. The plot was so dense from the
beginning it instantly grabbed the audience attention. And to make it dramatic, the

majority of action took place in the levels of someones dream! Dreaming alone has its
interesting perks such as to what a dream can secretly mean to those dreams that turns out
to be deja vu. Also the technology used in the movie to do such a performance made the
audience believe that it can soon be possible to do. I know it made me think this way.
The Targeted audience for Sci-Fi Thrillers would be those who loves actions, the
use of technology, and science related ideas. Honestly this was the kind of movie that if
you didn't start watching it from the beginning you wouldn't understand anything! Which
brings me to another important audience grabber, which is confusion. Why would a
movie have confusion you may ask? Simply its trick that the director uses to reassure
that you, the audience, is paying close attention to every detail and fully grasp the movie
plot. This attention grabber is quite unique because it must be hard for the director to plan
out how exactly to confuse its audience but keep them intrigued.
Multiple movies may have the same concept, plot or genre but there will always be
quite a few differences that make it an individual movie. Shortly after the premiere of
Inception many critics marked it as this decades The Matrix. Yes these two movies
have their similarities such as a wide use of technology as well as the thought of another
world by being subconscious. The Matrix is about a computer programmer that lives an
ordinary life yet is targeted when seen to be a hacker at night. Reality was just always an
uncertain thing for him and now running away from the cops has lead him to a known
terrorist hacker named Morpheus. Morpheus helps Neo and reveals how the true world
and how it became a wasteland for humanity. Also those Machines such as the cops
want to take control. Although both movies have different directors, they were both able
to bring the audience a common action, visual affects, plot and excitement. Both movies

follow the Sci-Fi conventions and entertained the same audience yet remained to be
known as their own movie.
To Switch up the genre of a Sci-Fi Thriller movie to a T.V show it would involve
quite a few key transitions within conventions, purpose, audience as well as context/plot.
An example of a T.V show similar to Inception and The Matrix will be Threat
Matrix and 24. Both shows, Threat Matrix and 24 are series in which involves
federal agents protecting the homeland of security and the daily threats received by the
president. Its purpose is to entertain the audience with such detailed plot and action that
will leave them wanting to see more in every episode. The conventions are to remain the
same with the suspense, excitement, adventure, tension, and special effects.
Yes, the audience is more likely to be those who are interested within the
government issues, homeland security, terrorist threats, political status, action, and
heroism. Each of these interests is involved within the story plot and are carried out
through episodes. The key component to a TV show is that each episode reveals more
and more details to solve the plot. But none of the less, not every TV show is the same
with episodes. Some TV shows have continuous episodes while others have mixed
flashback episodes that require commitment to the show to fully understand it. Threat
Matrix is the kind of show that starts off with an important event that happens and the
audience has to keep track the each event, the time it takes place and the locations.
Although Threat Matrix came out in 2003-2004, its also very similar to a recent show
called 24 that also involves the same ideas and episode outline, its just a newer version
of the show. Newer versions of shows are to be expected with a span of time to build up a
big audience again.

The purpose of the TV show would be to have the same plot scheme as the movie
just spaced out the time in which the events would happen. The major difference between
a movie and a TV show is the time management. The common average of a movie is
around 1 hour and 25 minutes but can go as long as 4 hours. A TV shows normally
averages from either half an hour to an hour. Directors have the challenge to space out
the plot according to set time to present it to the audience. Also with TV shows people
tend to come obsessed with them rather than a movie and if there are similarities from
movie to TV show, the chances are higher to grasp the attention of the same crowd. TV
shows are also good for those who have short attention spans since airtime can only be so
long.
As many of you would know there are certain differences within genre, those of
which goes against what the audience expects of a genre and that is known as constrains.
These constrain would be known as hysterical jokes in the middle of a killing scene of a
horror movie. Another example would be ballet dancing before a race in an action movie.
Constrains for Sci-Fi Thrillers would be bloody killings, witty jokes, cartoon characters,
and parties. This change of details within the genre just doesnt correspond correctly and
would be very surprising to the audience if it were to happen. Constrains are helpful
when it comes to finding what the conventions are to be found by each genre. Each
specific genre calls for certain details (the conventions) that makes up the genre and those
details that oppose (constrains) which is why people as a whole have genuine interest on
different genres.

Peer review comments:

Dylan- It all seemed really good except for the last sentence in your introduction seemed
a little random like it was kind of out of place and the first two sentences in your second
paragraph I think would sound a little better if you combined them somehow.

Dylan- The transition between the two genres was perfect and it flowed from the movie
to a TV Show. There were a few grammatical errors but other than that what you have so
far is great. I think you should speak a little more on why the different genres may have
the same concepts or plots twists.
