TrueDrive Technology

TrueDrive Output Stage

VDD

Used in TIs high current gate drivers and controllers, the

TrueDrive output architecture is constructed of bipolar
and CMOS transistors in parallel. The bipolar transistors
provide maximum gate drive current during the power
MOSFETs switching transition and the CMOS transistors
are used to pull the output to the rails at the end of the
switching transition. TrueDrive technology delivers
high current at where it is needed most at the MOSFET
Miller plateau region thresholds, and provides switching
efficiency gains.

In a typical switching cycle of a power MOSFET, the critical region that affects the
switching losses is the Miller Plateau. The switching speed is dependent on sink and
sink current capability of the output driver, while the MOSFET gate-source voltage is
between the threshold level and Miller plateau voltage. MOSFET Drivers using
TrueDriveTechnology, however, can provide efficient current sourcing and sinking
where it is needed most at the Miller plateau region.

Step 1 corresponds to turn-on/turn-off delay.

Step 2 + Step 3 indicate switching time.

Step 4 occurs after switching is complete.

Predictive Gate Drive technology is a digital control technique

to control delay times in high efficiency, low output
voltage synchronous buck converters. Using a closed loop
feedback system to detect body-diode conduction, it adjusts
MOSFET turn-on and turn-off overlaps to minimize the
conduction time. Benefits include:
Eliminates MOSFET body-diode conduction
Less voltage ringing due to less reverse recovery
charge
Two to four percent overall efficiency improvement
20 to 40% thermal dissipation improvement

Advantages

Variable input thresholds

2/3 of VDD
1/3 of VDD
Excellent noise immunity

Disadvantages

Not practical in 5 V or below

systems because turn-off
threshold will be < = 1.66 V
less than drivers UVLO.

Fixed input thresholds

2 V typical
1.5 V typical
Input swing is not dependent
upon matching drivers VDD
allowing maximum flexibility in
choosing PWM controller and
designing the power stage..
Lower noise immunity
depending on how close
to zero volts the turn-off
threshold is.
