TEAMTALK

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Om Swastiastu...

This December is a busy month for Bali as the Galungan and Kuningan celebrations will
take place from December 16 to 18 and December 26 to 28, not to mention that many
travelers will arrive on the island to spend their Christmas and New Years tropical-style.
The roads will likely be packed, so allow yourself some extra travel time if youre
venturing outside your hotel or resort. This is especially the case on New Years Eve. If
you are still in search of something special to do to ring in the New Year, turn to FEAST

& FESTIVITIES to see a list that weve compiled out of the many, many options available.
These choices have caught our eye and hopefully youll nd something there for you.
Keeping with the holiday spirit, weve prepared a gift guide featuring items from the
new Seminyak shop SOUQ, as well as an article in CRAFT & CULTURE about Balinese
crafts that can be transformed into gift boxes, table centerpieces and more. We also
take a peek into Blueberry Guitars to see their custom-carved guitars, which would
make great gifts for music lovers! And if plane tickets are on your wish list, turn to
FOTO FOLIO for striking images that might inspire your next trip in Indonesia.
All this and more in this months festive issue. Happy holidays and we hope you
enjoy your time on the island!

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot

more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
