SECTION VI: STAKEHOLDER SURVEY

Survey Summary:
According to Doug Johnson in The Indispensable Librarian, [a]n important source of information
about the library program comes from the patrons it serves (Johnson, 2013, p. 20). In order to
assess how the Library Media Center at Antler Trail Elementary is currently serving its own patrons,
an anonymous ten-question survey, created using an online tool called Typeform, was administered
to evaluate teachers perceptions of the school media program. Johnson (2013) explains [a]sking
library users to complete surveys and participate in focus groups is an effective means of collecting
information about the impact of the library programs on an ongoing basis (p. 27). Survey questions,
formatted using a Likert-scale rating system, were developed to specifically target the following areas
of the media program: standards-based instruction, program leadership, instructional area, and
curriculum and planning.
Once surveys are distributed and responses are submitted, Johnson (2013) explains that the next
process of evaluation may begin. He explains, [t]he data gathered by the surveys, inventories, and
rubrics should be carefully tabulated and examined for patterns that indicate a high degree of
agreement in particular areas (p. 23). To tabulate our own data, we carefully examined all 27 of the
responses submitted for our stakeholder survey. The survey results we collected represent teacher
opinions about media/teacher collaboration and the role of the media specialist. The overall results
of the survey were positive and support the media specialists role as an information specialist and
valuable team member of the school. Of all the areas evaluated, teachers were most satisfied with the
job the media specialist has done to collect media resources that support curriculum and the needs
of its population. A high degree of agreement was also indicated on the questions evaluating
instructional practices, ethics and appropriate use training, and the protection of instructional time
and space. Though the results of the survey certainly highlighted areas of strength, Doug
Johnson(2013) explains, [t]he purpose of gathering data, of course, is to help identify both the
strong and weak areas of the library program (p. 22). With this in mind, stakeholder responses were
carefully analyzed to determine areas needing improvement. When looking at questions regarding
the collaboration of the media specialist, specifically Questions 1 and 2, the results indicate the
majority of teachers approve of the instructional methods being implemented, but would like to see
more collaborative efforts made to monitor and assess students progress. Teachers also indicated
the need to be more informed about how the librarian plans to evaluate and revise media center
programs and activities. Further, a population of survey participants reported that they either
disagreed or had not observed the media specialists efforts to provide opportunities for communal
input, to promote the library program to all stakeholders, or to encourage stakeholder use of the
OPACs, Destiny. Finally, it was determined that more information on how teachers can utilize
available resources is needed.

Using the data we collected, the media specialist has the necessary information needed to build on
program strengths and to revise programs that were determined to be areas of weakness. One
suggestion we feel could improve the media center program is to form a library planning committee,
made up of at least one member of each stakeholder group (parents, students, administration,
teachers), that meets regularly to discuss current media programs and activities. This way,
stakeholders have more of an opportunity to provide input, ask questions, and learn about
resources and services available in the library.
Though the results of our stakeholder survey provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of
the ATES library media program, it was determined that the following changes should be made
before administering this survey to future participants:
Add an additional question to evaluate teachers perceptions of library scheduling and
availability.
Decompose Question 1 into two parts: 1) Perceptions on collaboration opportunities, and 2)
Perceptions of the instructional practices used during collaborative lessons.
Perhaps provide a paper copy of the survey, in addition to the online survey, to make it more
convenient for those less inclined to complete it online.Twenty-seven of the thirty-seven
members of the ATES teaching staff completed the survey. Our goal is to get to 100%
participation.

Survey Questions:
1) The media specialist collaboratively plans and teaches 21st- century information literacy
using effective practices, engaging tools, and library resources to help students master
content area curriculum standards.
2) The media specialist collaborates with classroom teachers to use assessment tools to monitor
student progress and adjust instruction.
3) The media specialist instructs staff in the legal and ethical use of information.
4) The media program models the appropriate use of instructional resources in the media
