Featuring nearly 100 full-color repro-
ductions of Germaine Arnaktauyok’s
most important works from through-
out her career, this beautiful book
provides an in-depth look at one of
the Canadian North’s most prolific
and recognizable artists. In this book,
she tells the story of her life in her

tial school in Chesterfield Inlet; her
education as an artist in Winnipeg and
Ottawa; and her return to the North,
where she continues to create draw-
ings, etchings, and illustrations that
have been featured in museums and
galleries worldwide. She also provides
commentary on several of her works, offering a seldom-seen glimpse into her inspiration and process.
Germaine Arnaktauyok is an Inuit artist and illustrator, best known for her prints and etchings depicting Inuit myths and traditional
ways of life. In 2000, she designed the special edition two-dollar coin commemorating the inception of the territory of Nunavut. She

Jack Kusler
A collector of comic books since childhood, Jack Kusler
began attending the San Diego Comic Conventions at the
El Cortez hotel in 1974. To commemorate his trips, he took
along his father’s new Polaroid camera and took “instant”
photographs of comic book legends. He also collected the
autographs of celebrities, and over the years amassed an
amazing collection autographs and photos of comic book
luminaries, including Jerry Seigel and Joe Shuster, who
created Superman; Bob Kane, Batman creator; Stan Lee,
former president of Marvel Comics; and many more. With
more than 300 color photos in the book, Kusler offers a
sampling of his experiences at the early days of the famed
convention before it moved to the new convention center.

Monster Hunters
On the Trail with Ghost Hunters, Bigfooters,
Ufologists, and Other Paranormal Investigators
Tea Krulos
• Co-op available
Do ghosts exist? What about Bigfoot or Skinwalkers? And how
will we ever know? Journalist Tea Krulos spent more than a year
traveling nationwide to meet individuals who have made it their life’s
passion to hunt down evidence of entities that they believe exist but
that others might shrug off as nothing more than myths, fairy tales,
or the products of overactive imaginations. Without taking sides in
the debate, Krulos joins these believers in the field, exploring haunt-
ed houses, trekking through creepy forests, and scanning skies and
lakes as they collect data on the unknown poltergeists, chupacabras,
Skunk Apes (Bigfoot’s stinky cousins), and West Virginia’s Mothman.
Along the way, he meets a diverse cast of characters—true believers,
skeptics, and hoaxers—from the credible to the quirky, and has a
couple of hair-raising encounters that make him second-guess his
own beliefs.
Tea Krulos is a freelance journalist and the author of Heroes in
the Night and the blog of the same name. He lives in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin.

“In his fascinating history of carbonated drinks, Donovan reveals
that fizz is about a lot more than just bubbles.”

hensive work on the subject like none have before. Recommended
for those who enjoy industry histories and a must-have for libraries.”

We tend to think of cities as a realm apart, somehow separate from
nature, but nothing could be further from the truth. In Feral Cities
Tristan Donovan digs below the urban gloss to uncover the wildlife
that we share our streets and homes with. Along the way readers
will meet the wall-eating snails that are invading Miami, the wild
boars that roam Berlin, and the monkey gangs of Cape Town. From
carpet-hungry bugs to coyotes hanging out in sandwich shops, Feral
Cities takes readers on a journey through streets that are far more
alive than we often realize, shows how the animals are adjusting to
urban living, and investigates how human attitudes and culture influ-
ence wildlife issues in urban areas.
Tristan Donovan is the author of Fizz: How Soda Shook Up the World
and Replay: The History of Video Games. His journalism has appeared
in the Times, the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, Stuff, Eurogamer,
the Big Issue, Community Care, and many other publications.

RIGHTS: WORLD Dilip Dalvi, a worker at Echjay Forgings, had just finished eating his
CHICAGO REVIEW PRESS APRIL breakfast in Machine Shop B when he saw something move behind
one of the machines. He thought it was a dog, but on looking again
he soon realized it was no dog.
Dilip ran as fast as his legs would carry him. As he made for the exit,
he screamed at his colleagues: “Run! A leopard has come!”
The workshop dissolved into pandemonium. Workers rushed out of
the door and slammed it shut behind them, trapping the beast inside.
They hurriedly locked the door and then, for good measure, pushed
a twenty-two pound iron block against the entrance.
From inside came the sound of angry roars and then loud thuds as
the trapped leopard began hurling itself against the door. The work-
ers called the police. The police arrived and asked the forest depart-
ment to come and deal with the trapped leopard.
Then, as the police and workers drank tea while waiting for the for-
est department to arrive, the leopard once more threw itself against
the locked door. This time, the door burst open. The now free leop-
ard, its spotted fur black with machine oil, let out an almighty roar.

Teacups and saucers crashed to the ground as police and workers
fled in panic. For a brief moment, Dilip found himself right in front
of the beast, boxed in by the parked police van. But instead of
attacking, the leopard dived under the van, before sprinting over the
compound wall and into the surrounding slums.

5. Captain America
Blond haired, blue eyed, and completely star spangled—everything about
Captain America screams “superhero.” From his chiseled good looks to his
trademark metal shield to his old-world sensibilities, Captain America (aka
Steve Rogers) towers over the Marvel landscape. His first film’s subtitle, The
First Avenger, may be a bit of a misnomer, but there are few figures more icon-
ic in the modern comic book and comic book cinema landscape than Captain
America. In truth, Steve Rogers didn’t join the Avengers until the series’ fourth
issue, when he was found frozen in a block of ice. Still, he is considered by
many to be one of the original Avengers and has been an integral part of the
team almost constantly since its inception in 1963. Though, as a pop cultural
institution, he predates all of his onscreen peers by nearly two decades and
without the groundwork he laid, none of them would be possible.

The Fast Life and Sudden Death
of Lynyrd Skynyrd
Mark Ribowsky
“Ribowsky . . . is a deft narrator of the life of Humble Howard,
taking his readers from the skinny kid in Brooklyn who yearned
to spend more time with an absent father to the sportscaster who
helped make an event out of ‘Monday Night Football’ by being so
very different from anyone else who had ever called a game.”
—New York Times Book Review on Howard Cosell
“An entertaining read and a thought-provoking portrayal of the
multi-faceted Howard Cosell in all his glory and enmity. . . . The
book vividly depicts Cosell as a brilliant meteor that soared through
the electronic sky before ultimately fading, dimmed by controversy,
age, exhaustion, and perhaps his own obstreperous personality.”
—Wall Street Journal on Howard Cosell
• Co-op available
This intimate story of Lynyrd Skynyrd tells of how a band of lost
souls and self-destructive misfits with uncertain artistic objectives
clawed their way to the top of the rock ’n’ roll world. Based on inter-
views with surviving band members, Whiskey Bottles and Brand-
New Cars shares how lead singer and front man Ronnie Van Zant
guided the band’s hugely successful five-year run and, in the process,
created not only a new country rock idiom, but a new Confederacy
in constant conflict with old Southern totems and prejudices. Placing
the music and personae of Skynyrd into a broad cultural context, this
book gives a new perspective to a history of stage fights, motel-room
destructions, cunning business deals, and brilliant studio produc-
tions. It also offers a greater appreciation for a band whose legacy,
in the aftermath of their last plane ride, has since descended into
self-caricature.
Mark Ribowsky is the author of 10 books, including widely praised
biographies of Howard Cosell, Tom Landry, Satchel Paige, and Phil
Spector. His writing has appeared in numerous magazines, including
High Times, Penthouse, and Playboy. He lives in Boca Raton, Florida.

“One time in Birmingham,” recalled [guitarist Ed] King, “we experienced our first limo ride
from the gig back to the hotel. Big time stuff. When we got there, [singer] Ronnie [Van Zant]
demanded the night’s take from our road manager, Russ Emerick. Russ told Ronnie he had
the money but taxes had to be paid along with other expenses. It still came out to $15,000.
Ronnie took the cash and gathered us all in one room. He held the money in his hand peeling
off hundreds, saying to each of us, ‘You two played pretty good tonight, you get a thou-
sand bucks each. And you did ok, too . . . you get a thousand bucks. You did what you were
told, that’s worth a thousand. You played some good licks . . . here’s a grand.’ Then, he said,
‘You’—I won’t say who it was but he wasn’t talking to me—‘you played like shit. You don’t
get nothin’.’ Ronnie paid himself two grand. Lesson learned.”

Interviews and Encounters with David Bowie
Edited by Sean Egan

• Part of the Musicians in Their Own Words series
Bowie on Bowie presents some of the best interviews David Bowie
has granted in his near five-decade career. Each featured interview
traces a new step in his unique journey, successively freezing him in
time in all of his various incarnations, from a young novelty hit-mak-
er and Ziggy Stardust to plastic soul player, 1980s sell-out, and the
artistically reborn and beloved elder statesman of challenging popular
music. In all of these iterations he is remarkably articulate and also
preternaturally polite as almost every interviewer remarks upon his
charm. The features in this book come from outlets both prestigious—
Melody Maker, MOJO, New Musical Express, Q, Rolling Stone—and
less well-known—the Drummer, Guitar, Ikon, Mr. Showbiz—but no
matter the renown of the magazine, newspaper, or website, Bowie lets
us approach the nerve center of his notoriously creative output.
Sean Egan is an author and journalist who has interviewed members
of the Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Kinks, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling
Stones, the Sex Pistols, the Velvet Underground, the Who, and many
others. He is the author of several books, including Defining Moments

Ben Hogan’s accomplishments on the golf course are the stuff of
legends, but his life off it was exceedingly private. In this biography,
author Tim Scott demonstrates why such public perception was not
representative of Hogan’s personality, offering a firsthand glimpse
into the famous golfer’s humor and sensitivity. Hogan wasn’t perfect,
and many of his fine qualities were never made public until now,
as Tim Scott shares his personal experience with Hogan as well as
Hogan’s friends, family, and acquaintances. Along the way, a clearer
picture emerges of Hogan as a man, a golfer, a friend, and a husband.
Tim Scott worked at the Ben Hogan Company from 1969 to 1982

My Way
Colin Gunderson
Foreword by Joe Torre
• Co-op available
Tommy Lasorda believed that winning wasn’t about being the
best, but about believing you are the best and that philosophy runs
throughout Tommy Lasorda: My Way. Author Colin Gunderson
takes readers through Lasorda’s days as a player and the manager of
the Los Angeles Dodgers, including their two World Series Champi-
onships in 1981 and 1988. It also provides fans with a peek at what
makes Lasorda tick: his relationship with his father, Sabatino, whom
he emulated; his childhood growing up in Norristown, Pennsylvania,
working odd jobs; and his unfailing work ethic. That work ethic
helped him become one of baseball’s most successful managers as he
won the World Series twice, won four National League pennants and
eight division titles with the Dodgers. In this book, fans will recall
some of their favorite Lasorda anecdotes, and will also be privy to
new information and rich background on this national baseball trea-
sure, including memories from an All-Star roster of Dodgers stars.
Colin Gunderson worked for the Los Angeles Dodgers for 13 years,
12 of which as press coordinator and assistant to Tommy Lasorda.
He lives in Alexandria, Virginia. Joe Torre won four World Series as
manager of the New York Yankees and was inducted into the Hall of

The Italian word narratore means storyteller, which
is something Tommy certainly is. He has been telling
stories for decades about himself and his players, and
now it is time to turn the tables. This book aims to
pay tribute to Tommy Lasorda by getting some of his
former players, and a few of his close friends, to tell
their favorite Tommy stories, and to use those stories
to highlight his life’s work and the lessons he taught.
He taught the Dodger Way, his way. As you will see in
the following pages, that is exactly what Tommy did
for his players, and to millions of friends and fans who
have had the privilege and honor of interacting with

Standing in right field, Mantle had the craggily voice of his manager running though his head. Prior to the
start of the Series, Stengel pulled Mantle to the side. “Take everything you can get over in center,” he ordered
Mantle. “The Dago’s heel is hurting pretty bad.”
Heeding Casey’s directive, Mantle was shaded a couple of steps toward center and he was off at the crack of
the bat as Mays lofted a high fly to right-center. Mantle was running at full speed when he heard DiMaggio
call him off the ball.
“I got it,” Joe shouted above the din of the crowd.
It was Mickey’s ball for certain, but protocol said he defer to the great DiMaggio. Mantle, at full flight when
he heard Joe’s call, pulled up to give way when his spikes were caught in a rubber drain cover. Mickey’s legs
went out from under and he crumpled to the turf as if taken out by a sniper’s bullet.
DiMaggio easily hauled in the fly ball before quickly turning and attending to the stricken Mantle. Kneeling
before Mick, DiMaggio placed his hand on Mantle’s shoulder, “They’re coming out with the stretcher, kid,”
Joe told him.
Stillness came over the large Stadium crowd. Those familiar with the Stadium’s terrain all had the same
thought. He’d stumbled over a sprinkler located in that very spot of the field. The reaction turned from
apprehension to fear; more than one spectator’s mind turned to Mantle’s osteomyelitis infected left limb. The
disease, as so many had learned through the papers, could be fatal.
For moments, for what seemed like eternity, Mickey lay completely motionless.

Watergate, Roe v. Wade, Vietnam, and the
Month That Changed America Forever
James Robenalt
Foreword by John W. Dean
• Co-op available
• Advertising in American Heritage and New York Review of Books
• Author tour to include New York City and Washington, DC
In January 1973, politics in America changed forever as, in the span
of 31 days, the Watergate burglars went on trial, the Nixon admin-
istration negotiated an end to the Vietnam War, the Supreme Court
issued its decision in Roe v. Wade, Lyndon Johnson died in Texas,
and Richard Nixon was sworn in for his second term. The events
had unlikely links and each worked along with the others to create a
time of immense transformation. Using newly released Nixon tapes,
author and historian James Robenalt provides readers an insider’s
look at what happened in the White House, events both fascinating
and terrifying, during this monumental month. He also delves into
the judge’s chambers and courtroom drama during the Watergate
break-in trial, and the inner sanctum of the United States Supreme
Court as it hashed out its decision in Roe v. Wade. A foreword by
John W. Dean sets the stage for this unique history, which details
events that, while taking place more than 40 years ago, are key to
understanding today’s current political paralysis.
James Robenalt is a trial lawyer and the author of The Harding
Affair and Linking Rings. He lives in Cleveland, Ohio. John W. Dean
was White House Counsel under Richard Nixon and is a bestselling
author, most recently of The Nixon Defense. They are sought-after
speakers on the Watergate scandal.

Klandestine
How a Klan Lawyer and a Checkbook
Journalist Helped James Earl Ray Cover Up
His Crime
Pate McMichael
• Co-op available
• Advertising in American Heritage and Oxford American
James Earl Ray, an escaped convict from Missouri, was punished for
the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. despite the fact that he did
not fit the caricature of a hangdog racist thirsty for blood. The media
has often portrayed him as hapless and apolitical, someone who must
have been paid by clandestine forces, and it’s a narrative that Ray
himself put in motion upon his June 1968 arrest in London, then con-
tinued from jail until his death in 1998. Klandestine documents the
evolution of Ray’s alibi from 1968 to 1999—the year Dr. King’s own
family declared him an innocent man—yet argues that he was indeed
motivated by racial hatred and did in fact pull the trigger. It closes
the book on the conspiracy that Ray and his defense team created,
which asserted that Raoul, a mysterious seaman with deep connec-
tions to the criminal grapevine, framed Ray as part of a complicated
New Orleans–based conspiracy. Ray brought Raoul to life by forging
a lucrative publishing partnership with two very strange bedfellows:
a slick Klan lawyer named Arthur J. Hanes, the de facto “Klonsel”
for the United Klans of America, and checkbook journalist William
Bradford Huie, the darling of Look magazine and a longtime menace
of the KKK. Despite polar opposite views on race, Hanes and Huie
found common cause in the lucrative world of conspiracy; together,
they thought they could make Memphis the new Dallas. Told chrono-
logically through Hanes and Huie’s key perspectives, this unique
vantage shows how a legacy of unpunished racial killings—combined
with fevered interest in political assassinations—provided the perfect
exigency to sell a reckless and lucrative conspiracy to a suspicious and
outraged nation.
Pate McMichael is an award-winning journalist. His stories have been
published in Atlanta magazine, Saint Louis magazine, Zócalo Public
Square, and elsewhere. He lives in Madison, Georgia.

the route, Ray broke free and made his way to St. Louis, then to Chicago, where he hid out for
several weeks working as a dishwasher at the Indian Trail Restaurant in Winnetka, Illinois. In
June, Ray moved to Montreal for two months in a failed attempt to acquire a Canadian pass-
port, before doubling back through Illinois and then on to Alabama.
On August 26, Ray arrived at the Birmingham depot ready to reinvent himself. He purchased a
.38-caliber pistol and rented a safe deposit box from Birmingham Trust National Bank, where
the Klan maintained its “White Man’s Defense Fund” account. He took dancing lessons, stud-
ied photography, and read the paper. In the classifieds, he found a 1966 white Mustang, a hot
rod with red interior, styled with “Heart of Dixie” license plates. He bought it for $1,995 and
on October 6, he set out for California by way of Mexico. How he paid his expenses—possibly
explained by the July 13, 1967 robbery of the Bank of Alton—has never been definitely estab-
lished. Clearly, his wages as a short-term dishwasher during the summer of 1967 hardly explain
this rambling, international lifestyle.

Silent Running
Our Family’s Journey to the Finish Line with Autism
Robyn K. Schneider with Kate Hopper
• Co-op available
Running is a way of life for the Schneider family, but not in the same way
as it is for most runners. Twin brothers Alex and Jamie Schneider are
severely autistic—they are nonverbal and when anxiety takes over they
bite themselves or slam their feet into the hard floor, they cannot tell their
mother Robyn if they are hurt or hungry, and they can never be left alone.
Yet they have run almost 150 races, including six marathons. The boys’
parents have also turned to running to battle health issues: father Allan
successfully manages his symptoms of multiple sclerosis with vitamins and
miles and miles of jogging on the trails near their Long Island home, while
mother Robyn, who, while undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer six
years ago, laced up her own running shoes for the first time and headed
out the door, determined to run her way to recovery. In Silent Running,
Robyn Schneider shares her family’s incredible story of triumph in the
face of enormous hurdles, and of the shared passion that has fueled their
fight. It is a story of hope and of never giving up.
Robyn K. Schneider is a mother of two autistic sons and a founding par-
ent of the Eden II Genesis School, one of the most respected schools for
children with autism in the country. She is the founder and race director
of the Blazing Trails for Autism Run. She lives on Long Island in New
York. Kate Hopper teaches writing courses at the Loft Literary Center and
online. She is an editor at Literary Mama and the author of the memoir
Ready for Air: A Journey through Premature Motherhood. She lives in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.

I want to defeat religion.
What do I mean by “defeat”? I want to shrink religion—specifically, fundamentalist
religion—to the point that it is marginalized in U.S. society. I want to make religious
fundamentalists the new flat-earthers—they should be so disliked that they run to
the farthest reaches of America to hide. Religion will be defeated when religious
fundamentalists are so unpopular that politicians avoid them rather than pander
to them. Religion will be defeated when U.S. politicians refuse their endorsements
and stop intoning the pandering platitude, “And may God bless the United States
of America.” Religion will be defeated when the media consider fundamentalists so
extreme that they give them no platform to voice their views and instead target them
for ridicule. Religion will be defeated when people are too embarrassed to admit in
public that they believe the earth is 6,000 years old. And religion will be defeated
when no one tries to convert anyone else to his or her supernatural belief system.
I don’t imagine all religion will ever be gone, but I’ll keep fighting religion until it
has very little influence on politics, the media, science, sexuality, economics, charity,
education, gender relations, or even federal holidays.

In 13th-century Japan, disease, famine, violence, and natural di-
sasters plague society. Samurai lords, blinded by power, shirk any
responsibility to protect the citizenry. Religious leaders care more
about currying favor with the powerful than helping common
people find hope and a positive way to deal with their suffering.
But one unknown Buddhist monk dares to speak the truth to
power: Nichiren remonstrates with the authorities. He insists
that all human life is precious and that the government needs to
change its ways and become of service to the people. He criticizes
the established religions as being merely pawns of the state, who
teach ideas that only further the people’s sense of powerlessness.
The true purpose of Buddhism, he asserts, is to teach people a
way to empower themselves, challenge their destiny, and experi-
ence happiness in this life. Based on actual events, this exciting
comic touches on major milestones in Nichiren’s life interwoven
with basic Buddhist principles. This real-life adventure story will
captivate readers as it illustrates the life of one courageous human
being who stopped at nothing to bring happiness to the people
and peace to the land.

“Maybe we kill, Father.” Michael concluded with this simple statement and he waited for Father
Ford’s reaction. He knew based on their initial conversations that it could take Ford some time to
come around. So he waited.
“Kill . . . ”
Father Ford was taking it in but had to hear the word again—this time from his mouth. He wanted
to feel affronted; he wanted to be disturbed. He wasn’t. Removing opposition to the will of God,
how could that be a bad thing? Didn’t the Bible condone death for the sake of the greater good?
Yes, it did; and, so, why not now? So many communities had been destroyed, with their demise
recorded in scripture. If God is consistent through time and is protective of God’s people, how
could the removal of those opposed to righteousness be wrong? Violence was a part of salvation
history, and it was typically brought about through human agents working on behalf of God.
Blood sacrifice in so many forms was part of the story—from Hebrew Bible stories of punishment
and scapegoats, to the Christian story of the sacrifice of Jesus the Christ for the sins of humanity.
Yes, blood, pain, suffering, death—all part of the story of human advancement consistent with the
will and aims of God. No way around it, killing wasn’t necessarily a problem for Christians like he
and Michael. In fact, it might be a requirement of contemporary disciples of Christ.

ies of a young couple are discovered inside their camper on a closed

Monsieur Notebooks
Hide Stationery Ltd
For too long, the notebook has been saddled with a less-than-stellar reputation; the word itself conjures up images of sixth-grade home-
rooms and cheap paper covers tearing away from spiral bindings. Monsieur Notebooks are crafted from an entirely different perspec-
tive: the belief that a good notebook can be a great companion, something to be treasured. These books come in a variety of shapes,
sizes, and colors and are made out of top-grain leather that wears beautifully. So whether users are taking them along on far-flung ad-
ventures or just subjecting them to the grind of daily life (and the bottom of a messenger bag), these tough notebooks remain the perfect
place to record work, notes, sketches, or sudden flashes of inspiration.
Hide Stationery Ltd produces the Monsieur Notebook line of blank books and journals.

Excerpt:
In a healthy culture, right-brain attempts to achieve unity and harmony are appreciated and
nourished along with left-brain attempts to protect individual rights. In such a culture, the
dualistic left brain (the voice of true conservatives) criticizes holistic perspectives and percep-
tions (those of liberals) in order to keep the liberal big-picture perspective sharp—and liberals
appreciate the criticism and adjust accordingly. Also in a healthy culture, we find a center of
power made up of holistically and dualistically directed individuals cooperating and competing
in an environment of mutual respect. In this situation, ideological extremists are heard, but the
power they exercise is mostly limited to the power of truth (since truth will always triumph,
given sufficient time). In a healthy culture, we have a central core of stability, along with two
enormously valuable but potentially dangerous extremes feeding new ideas into the center.
Such a scenario works. Here is what does not work: The center splits, and we are left with two
relatively equal forces in a battle for control, each viewing the other as responsible for our cul-
tural problems. When this happens, instead of the harmony of a whole regulated by the wisdom
of the center, we have two polarized harmonies, limited in vision, disrespectful of each other,
and battling for supremacy. The result is a polarized culture, and a culture war.

Truro Light
A Journey from
Ocean to Bay
Photographs by Joseph Schuyler
Foreword by Rowland Scherman
• Co-op available
For the past decade, photographer
Joseph Schuyler has trained his lens on
Truro, a 300-year-old Massachusetts
village that occupies a narrow strip
between the Atlantic Ocean in the
east and Cape Cod Bay in the west.
Protected from enriching development
by the Cape Cod National Seashore,
Truro—called Pamet or Payomet by the
Wampanoag people who first settled
there—has the feel of a secret paradise.
In between the two shores, there are
freshwater glacial ponds, the winding
Pamet River, tidal marshlands, a natural
harbor, sloping hills and formidable
dunes, oaks and shrub pines, flow-
ers, birds, and ever changing light. In
Truro Light, Schuyler makes a jour-
ney through his cherished but always
surprising landscape, beginning with
sunrise over the ocean and ending with
nighttime at the bay.
Joseph Schuyler has had a 30-year career as a photographer. His work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries and pub-
lished American Photographer, Photo District News, Rangefinder, and Zoom International, amongst others. His photographs received
two Kodak Golden Light Awards in portraiture and landscape. He lives in Delmar, New York. Rowland Scherman was a darkroom
apprentice at Life magazine, was the first photographer for the newly formed Peace Corps in 1961, and his photographs have appeared
in Life, Look, National Geographic, Paris Match, Playboy, and Time, among other publications. He won a Grammy Award in 1968
for his photograph cover of Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits, and his published collections include Elvis Is Everywhere and Love Letters. He
lives in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Get swept up in the glitz and glamour of the French Riviera as author
and filmmaker John Baxter takes readers on a whirlwind tour through
the star-studded cultural history of the Côte d’Azur that’s sure to
delight travelers, Francophiles, and culture lovers alike. Readers will
discover the dramatic lives of the legendary artists, writers, actors, and
politicians who frequented the world’s most luxurious resort during its
golden age. In 25 vivid chapters, Baxter introduces the iconic figures
indelibly linked to the South of France—artist Henri Matisse, writer F.
Scott Fitzgerald, Coco Chanel, and many more. Along the way, Baxter
takes readers where few people ever get to go: the alluring world of the
perfume industry, into the cars and casinos of Monte Carlo, behind-
the-scenes at the Cannes Film Festival, to the villa where Picasso and
Cocteau smoked opium, and to the hotel where Joseph Kennedy had
an affair with Marlene Dietrich. These luminaries celebrated life and
created art amid paradise and this book is the ultimate guide to the
Riviera’s golden age.
John Baxter is an Australian writer, journalist, and filmmaker. He is
the author of Chronicles of Old Paris, The Golden Moments of Paris,
