Foreword

In positioning Amarula as being synonymous with the very best that Africa has to offer, we conducted a
search for the best coffee roasters to develop an African blend of coffee that would symbolise the earthiness
and energy of Africa and perfectly complement Amarula.

On this journey, Amarula met up with Origin Coffee Roasting, the artisan roasters, based in Cape
Town, South Africa, who collaborated with us to produce our first coffee collection and so begin a new

AMARULA “The Spirit of Africa”

The story of friendship and a partnership created under the African Skies
The Marula tree, known in African legend as “The Marriage Tree” is revered by many tribes on
the African continent as is the unique fruit which is coveted by elephants across the lands.
The journey for Amarula which began in 1989 is the natural combination
of exotic Marula fruit and the finest, fresh cream. Undeniably exotic, but
also smooth and indulgent, the secret of this delectable beverage lays in the
Marula fruit, grown in the warm, frost-free regions of sub-equatorial Africa.
Efforts to cultivate the Marula tree have been largely unsuccessful and so
the fruit is harvested almost entirely from the wild, making this liquid even
more precious.

Harking to the African motherland, only the female Marula tree bears the
succulent and exotic flavoured fruit which ripens at the height of the African
summer, to a light yellow, filling the air with an intense tropical fragrance that
floats on the warm summer breeze.

Once the ripe Marula fruit, which contain four times as much Vitamin C as
the average orange, have been harvested, the hard kernels are removed and the
flesh crushed from the skin. The fruit pulp is then transported to the cellar in
Stellenbosch, where it is fermented in a very similar fashion to wine.
When fully fermented, the clear Marula wine is
double distilled and matured in small oak casks
for two years. It is then blended with the finest
fresh cream to create a mouth-wateringly rich
and soft indulgence, with an alcohol content of
17 percent.

Coffee, also owes its beginnings to the plains

of Africa. First cultivated in Kaffir, Ethiopia,
coffee has been traded across the world to become
one of the most popular and successful drinks of
all time.

It is fitting therefore that Amarula has been

instrumental in creating a collection of five
sublime beverages that can be imbibed anytime
and anywhere.
To start, the artisan roasters,
created a sultry blend of
perfectly roasted hand picked
coffee beans, cultured from
Africa’s premier coffee
plantations. Rich and fragrant,
this coffee evokes visions of
sophisticated luxury combined
with the raw energy and passion
that is modern Africa.

With your own bottle of award

Supporting elephants and community
Never forgetting what we owe to these magnificent beasts
who used to freely roam the continent, The Amarula
Elephant Research Programme, based at the University of
Natal in Durban, provides funding for a team of South
African and international academics who are working
with reserve managers and ecologists to draw up elephant
management plans for each reserve.

In addition, Amarula is integrally involved with the Kenyan

Wildlife Services, with whom they have formed a partnership
to support local elephant programmes - this will ensure
sustainability of conservation as a land-use practice and
hence the long-term survival of the elephant.
Amarula is also very involved in creating programmes for the local communities where they are involved. In Kenya, they have
raised funds and donated monies to upgrade security and lighting in communities servicing the Kenyan Wildlife Services
project as well as initiatives for those involved in the harvesting of the Marula fruit.

An estimated 60,000 indigenous people are supported through the harvesting

of the fruit alone.
But, with the harvesting season lasting for only about six weeks, Amarula has been instrumental in setting up other projects to
assist in supporting local residents including the building of a community clinic and a crèche.
