Publishers Note
Before I start, I would like to wish
all SPM, STPM or university/college
students that will be facing their major
examinations the best of luck. I hope
they perform well to build a platform
for greater achievements in the future.
2014 has been a very tough year for
Malaysia, but as inbound travelling
is affected by the aviation tragedies;
the local tourism industry can still
benefit from domestic travelling.
Hence I would like to encourage my
fellow Malaysians to explore places of
Klang Valley introduced in this edition
of Klang Valley 4 Locals, and grab
the opportunity to learn more about
various attractions in this region. We
should stay strong and support our
own travel and tour industry.
As the year-end school holidays will
start in November and the celebration
of Christmas in December, it will be
another season of travelling. Hence,
families and group of friends can
check out our Theme Parks section (pg
76) to plan your vacation or outdoor
activities.

KLANG HISTORY

The Klang district had appeared earlier

than Malacca. This state was part of
the colonial Sri Vijaya and Majapahit
governments. The origins of its name
came from the Mon- Khmer lamguage
Klong which meant warehouse.
Similarly, C.O Blagden explained
Klang as an important port with many
warehouses. While Charles A.Fishr
defined Klang as a canalor waterway.
His opinion was widely accepted given
that Klang has many waterways that are

made out of rivers, including Sg. Klang,

Sg. Bertek, Sg. Penang, Sg. Sementa, Sg.
Agas, Sg. Kandas, Sg. Binjai, Sg. Kapar,
Sg. Jati, Sg. Aur, Sg. Rasau, and Sg.
Putus. The name of this river remains to
this day. Klang became important only
after the decline of Kuala Selangor after
the death of Sultan Muhammad (18261857). In 1875, Klang was chosen as
the capital city of Selangor before the
capital city was moved to Kuala Lumpur
in 1880. In 1886, Klang was touted as a
beautiful and clean place.

KUALA KUBU BHARU

Monument of Kuala Kubu Tragedy

SIGHTSEEING

hen speaking of Kuala Kubu tragedy, it is often related to the broken dam.
In February 1883, the town was severely flooded due to a dam nearby that
broke, killing many civilians and damaging their homes. Many of the town
buildings were destroyed beyond repair, except a Buddhist temple and a mosque
which you will get to see when youre here. The flood victims included even Sir Cecil
Ranking who was a district officer during the British era. The old town of Kuala Kubu
was known as Broken Dam or Ampang Pecah in Malay and the tragedy has been
named Kuala Kubu Tragedy by the locals. The British, however, decided to build a
new town near the remains of Kuala Kubu, right after the tragedy occurred. This new
town is names Kuala Kubu Bharu, which bharu means new in Malay. A monument
to commemorate the tragedy has also been built here.

Kuala Kubu Bharu Dam

ertak Dam, or officially known as Selangor Dam, is built to replace the old
broken dam that caused the massive flood. There is a river called Pertak River
that flows along the Aborigines village into the dam. Some remains of the old
town are believed to be underwater of it. Rumour says that when Sir Cecil Ranking
was shooting the sacred white crocodile that appeared at the dam in attempt to kill
it, he missed a few shots and the bullets hit the wall of the dam, causing the dam to
break and flood the whole town. No matter how different the stories we get, they
are always related to the legend of the sacred white crocodile. To the locals, this new
dam is precious, as it reminds them of the history of their serene and quaint little
town.

KUALA SELANGOR NATURE PARK

uala Selangor is a heaven for a wide variety of

flora and fauna. It comprises over 200 hectares of
coastal land where a large part of it is mangrove
swamps. Mangrove ecosystems are extraordinary in
that they protect the coastline, serve as fish breeding
ground, give refuge to diverse wildlife and supply
wood. But Kuala Selangor Nature Park is much more
than just mangrove tress in a swamp. The park
stretches over 800 acres of three distinct habitats which
include inland secondary forests, muddy estuaries
and mudflats and a brackish lake that is inhibited by
wetland animals.

KUALA KUBU BHARU

Monumen Tragedi Kuala Kubu

SIGHTSEEING

Empangan Kuala Kubu Bharu

ACTIVITIES

alaysia has been one of the most frequented spots for outdoor
activities because fortunate for us, were always in good sunny
weather. This allows for all types of activities to run throughout
the year. A whole bunch of activities are available, even the not so
common ones such as sitting in drifting car or even flying a plane. Listed below are
businesses dedicated to adrenaline junkies out there.

TREKKING & CLIMBING

Gua Batu Maloi in Johol district,

Negeri Sembilan, will never be
accorded as cave status for
two reasons. First, its a granite
cave and secondly, since its not
a limestone cave, there are no
stalactites and stalagmites,Cave is
generally a natural underground
void that a man can enter; expert
insists that Gua Batu Maloi is, in
actual fact, a cave.

How to get there

Though located in Gunung Tampin
Forest Reserve, Gua Batu Maloi is only
accessible from Kampung Tanggai in
Johol district, about 40 minutes drive
from Tampin.

GOMBAK TO GENTING SEMPAH 45.58 kilometer

Road Safety Tips for Beginner Cyclists

Visibility is key:
Wear bright clothes and make sure you stay in a position where
other traffic can see you.
Car doors: When riding alongside parked
cars, be wary of doors flying open in your
path. Slow down and keep your eyes peeled.
Dont hug the kerb: Dont let other traffic
think its safe to squeeze past you in the same
lane its not. Stay a metre from the kerb
and you can be seen more easily from every
direction.
Hook turns:
If youre planning to turn
right, but youre not sure
about the other traffic, make
a hook turn (move to the left,
stop in front of traffic waiting
to go the way you wish to
travel and go straight ahead
when the lights change) to
avoid crossing lanes.

Get some company:

If youre new to riding on roads,
get a friend with a bike to show
you how theres always
safety in numbers.

The rules:
The road rules for cyclists vary slightly around
Malaysia. Youre much safer if you know what they are.
Look online to find out what the rules are for you.
Eye contact:
You cant be sure a driver knows youre there until
you make eye contact. Dont be afraid to wave just
to make sure youve been seen.

Check out these websites, if you want to join them for weekend cycling.

Theme Parks

efore the idea of theme parks started off in Malaysia we had funfairs or
carnivals, made up of amusement rides, food vendors, merchandise vendors, thrill
acts and animal acts. Funfairs do not have a fix venue of business for operation. As
time pasts, theme parks with roller coasters, Ferris wheels and other amusement
rides with a permanent location were introduced as outdoor attractions for families
and friends.
These theme parks were more of the amusement park type. Recently, water theme
parks became one of the most popular type of outdoor attraction for locals. Water
parks which offer various water rides and facilities is a great place for families. There
is also emerging types of theme parks, namely extreme parks and educationalthemed parks that are beginning to attract the attention of travellers.
Have a look at the theme parks in this section and start planning for your hoildays!

Eating Out

A big delight in every bite

alaysian Food is not one particular distinction of food but a culinary

diversity originating from its multi-ethnic population of Malay, Indian
and Chinese. There are also cuisines that have evolved from the
meeting of cultures notably those of the Nyonya and Indian Muslims
communities. Western cuisines, especially Continental and Mediterranean fare, are
also available in the major cities. Indeed, Malaysia as a meeting place of both eastern
and western cultures has produced a most diverse culinary melting pot. A brief look
into the past and how this multi-ethnic country came to be, is essential in order to
comprehend how such a cosmic array of food, has now come to be known all over
the world as Malaysian Food. Presented here are some of the various delicious and
popular dishes from this rainbow of gastronomic spectrum, with pictures from each
unique ethnic kitchen.

famous for its street food at food court. Food is available at almost every corner of

DENTAL

oday, people are combining a holiday to Malaysia with affordable dental

care due to prices being too out of reach of many in European and North
American countries. Malaysia is a multiethnic nation which offers dental
surgeries and English-speaking dentists, well-qualified to cater to all of your
dental needs, cosmetic or otherwise.
The neighboring countries of Malaysia, too, offer dental treatments but Malaysia
is nevertheless a regional leader in dental surgery due to numerous clinics here
that provides dental care tailored to international patients. Although its main
appeal is the affordable prices, Malaysia offers modern clinics, latest treatments
and up-to-date equipment.
Kuala Lumpur is the hub of dental care in Malaysia where hundreds of dentists
practice, but clinics serving dental tourists are also available in most major holiday
destinations such as Penang and Melaka. Since
most dental procedures have a short recovery
period, tourists can combine the treatment with
a holiday in this multicultural country.
Many dental clinics in Malaysia also help dental
tourists with their travel plans including flights,
airport pickups, sightseeing and accommodation.
The appointments can
be arranged around their
vacation to suit their needs.
Malaysia is the ideal
destination for dental
tourism in Asia.

TRAVEL TIPS

Travel Tips

1. Scan copies of IC, passport and

itinerary
While photocopying your important
documents can help, the next best thing
is to have soft copies of your documents
available within your smartphone. This
can definitely help provide an extra copy
of each in the event of loss or theft, and
you can display it if all else fails. You can
email them to yourself to ensure that
the copy remains within the phone, and
be sure that you have the right app to
open them installed on your phone. Not
having the right documentation at the
airport can cause major delays which
may end up costing money if they dont
let you fly at the time you need to!

134

2. When packing, keep rolling

Rather than folding piles and piles of
clothes, the best option is to roll them.
Rolling allows you to fit in more things
in your suitcase, and you can even
roll underwear and socks within your
clothes, saving you space and possibly
money from having to buy another
suitcase or spend more money buying
clothes you forgot to pack (unless of
course the plan was to shop- then shop
away!)!

3. Mark your baggage as fragile

If you can get your hands on the fragile
stickers or signs, use them on your
baggage. This will ensure that your
baggage is handled correctly and it will
be kept on the top. It doesnt always
work but if youre lucky and you do get
a conscientious baggage handler you
wont end up with a suitcase filled with
shampoo covered clothes and broken
souvenirs.

4. Pack your power bank

If youre traveling for more than 6
hours, your best form of entertainment
(if you didnt indulge in buying an
entertainment pack on your budget
flight) would be your smartphone. And
nothing would be worse than reaching
your destination with a dead phone and
no chance to charge it anywhere. Your
best solution would be to have a power
bank to charge your phone during
those times of emergency.

TRAVEL TIPS

6. Use plastic wrap for your bottles

Due to the air pressure in flights, some
of your toiletries may end up spilling its
contents leaving a sticky trail of mess
for you to deal with upon unpacking.
Use plastic wrap to cover your bottles,
or open the bottles, wrap the opening
with plastic wrap and then close it, to
prevent such a mess from occurring. No
mess, no need to buy new toiletries.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

5. Use bright ribbons to mark your

suitcase
It would be embarrassing to grab what
you think is your bag, but it turns out
you grabbed a bag that looks similar
to your but it isnt yours. Your best bet
would be to use brightly coloured
ribbons that you can see from afar tied
to your baggage to help you recognise
it from afar. Want to stand out more?
There are sushi bag covers that are
currently being sold from Japan online
where you can turn your baggage to
look like sushi on a conveyor belt.

7. Use ATMs to get local currency

Using money converters, especially at
the airport, usually comes with their
own fees and the exchange rates are a
lot higher than the usual rates too. So
if you need money at a local currency
without having to pay fees that are too
high, use your debit card at the local
ATM to get the cash that you need.

8. Shop for simple groceries outside

instead of the hotel
Lets face it; buying items at the hotel
is super convenient, but it will cost you
a lot more. If youre in need of water
and snacks in your hotel, head to the
nearest grocery store either on the way
to the hotel or to one nearby (you can
ask the receptionist on this!). Not only
will it save you money significantly,
it gives you a chance to explore your
destination better.
