Due to the differing nature and views of almost all people, morality is a matter of

preference. The views of one person could be totally different then the views of another
on a certain issue, whether it is stealing or murder. Situational circumstances also
change how a certain crime or act is viewed. Euthyphro himself, who claims to be a
complete moral authority, is not able to adequately answer what the exact definition of
morality is. The reason people tend to have similar morals is because we live in a
group, and the moral rules we have are to protect that lifestyle. Peoples views on
morals are almost always differing in some way, and can even be changed.
Situational changes have the biggest impact that I have seen on morality. If you
kill someone in rage or anger, it is viewed as a heinous crime and called murder.
However if someone attacks you with intent to harm, you are well within your rights to
end their life in self defense. Police officers shoot and kill individuals under questionable
circumstances often, and are still viewed as upholders of moral authority. Sometimes
reasoning behind an act that is viewed as immoral changes its morality. A their robbing
a jewelry store to buy drugs will be viewed as an immoral criminal, but if hes robbing it
to get money to save his starving children, many people will call him a poor desperate
man. Basically its untrue for people to say morality is cut and dry, because people
change their viewpoints based on the situation all the time.
Euthyphro is another prime example of how morality is based on preference. He
considers himself a complete moral authority on all matters. He is even willing to
condemn his father, because he is responsible for a mans death in a way Euthyphro
views as impious. Socrates speaks to him on the matter and explains how views of piety
and impiety are completely relative by speaking to him about the gods. If one god loves
something and another hates it, is the act morally sound? This is a question that brings
all moral standing into question. We view murder as a horribly immoral act, but the
ancient Mayans sacrificed thousands to their gods. If we are told from birth that a
certain action is acceptable or supported by our specific deitys, regardless of the act,
we will find it to be within our moral rights.
The final reason that morality is a matter of preference, is the fact that most of
our moral views are currently similar, but they fit the lifestyle we live in. Society has
most people now living together in close contact, with more and more people being
added every day. It makes sense that the things we would view as highly immoral would
be things like murder and theft. We spend every day with an incredibly large number of
people around us, and the things we own, people naturally want to protect that and
make sure its safe. All immoral acts are ones that hurt the individuals around you. Even
such things as adultery, since its viewed as immoral to protect your significant other
from leaving you for one of the many people around you. I believe the immoral acts
today are so similar all over the world, because the world is becoming more and more
similar.
