Non-Toy Gifts for Kids

by Deleste Magda

nyone who has

children, or even
just takes care of
them, knows the problem
of having too many toys,
scattered throughout the
house. No matter how diligent we are about keeping
them at bay, it seems to
be a constant fight. Its especially hard when special
days come and we want to
give gifts to our children,
or grandparents want to
give gifts.
Gifts are good things.
But, too much of anything
isnt good.

NON-TOY GIFTS FOR

CHILDREN:
1. Classes. Music, dance,
riding, drawing -- classes
are a great way to encourage children in their interests and let them know that
you pay attention to them
and what they enjoy.
2. Memberships. Zoo,
science museum, childrens
museum, YMCA membership, and etc., these are
particularly great for family
gifts. Many young families
want to enjoy day outings,
but affording them can be a
challenge, so give them the
gift of a yearly membership.
3. Subscriptions. Kids
enjoy getting things in the
mail. Why not encourage
their reading by getting
them a magazine subscription for something they are
interested in!
4. Events. Movie tickets,
or tickets to a play, concert
or sports event are really
exciting! Having an event to
look forward to makes the
rest of life more enjoyable.

A great way to combat

having too many toys is to
shift all the gifts to non-toy
items.

5. Activities. Mini golf,

bowling, skating rink, these
are so much fun! And a
big part of the fun is going
together. Children love
spending time with the

adults in their lives; they

want to see you enjoying
your time as well as enjoying them.
6. Recipe and Ingredients.
Kids love cooking with their
parents. Baking something
special or cooking dinner is
an ideal time to spend together and learn life skills.
Print out a recipe, purchase
all the ingredients and set a
date for cooking together.
7. Crafting Date. Children
love making crafts. I do,
too; I really do enjoy the
creative aspect. I know
how busy everyone is these
days, but exercising the
creative muscle can be very
therapeutic and enriching
for both parties. Keep a
basket of craft supplies and
get out a book for inspiration. I like Sneaky Art:
Crafty Surprises to Hide
in Plain Sight, by Marthe
Jocelyn.
8. Arts and Crafts supplies. If your craft box is
running low, stock up a
little on things you need.
Add in something fun the
kids havent used before.
A gift of arts and crafts
supplies often brings on the
imagination, and kids cant
wait to get to work!
9. Coupons. An envelope
of coupons that they can
spend at any time: Ill do
one chore -- no questions
asked; movie and popcorn
night, you pick the movie!;
1:1 game of cards or basketball (whatever the childs
interest is in); sit and read a
book with me; stay up 1/2
hour past bedtime.
10. Restaurant Gift Card.
Dinner, ice cream, coffee,
cupcake -- whatever suits
their fancy! Give them the
freedom of inviting whomever they wish: it may be
mom or dad; it may be a
grandparent, aunt or even

teacher they would like to

spend more time with.
11. Dress-Up Clothes.
These do need to be limited, but two dresses and
a couple play silks can get
hours and hours of play!
12. Books. We get a lot of
books from the library, but
there are some that I just
cant find there, or it takes
us longer to read through.
Be sure to pass the books
on when you are done, so
they dont clutter up your
home.
13. Clothes. When kids
only have a certain amount
of clothes, they often enjoy
getting clothes. Make it a
point to get something that
fits their style. That may
mean Western clothes, superhero, fancy dresses, etc.
14. Science Experiments.
If your child is curious or
studious, they will love this!
One can buy experiment
boxes, or even a book of
experiments that can be
carried out with common
household items.
15. Outdoor Supplies.
If you are an outdoorsy
family, giving kids their own
fishing tackle or gardening
equipment can be a big
deal. Its also something
that gets left on the shelf in
the garage, so you always
know right where to find it.
16. Telling Time. Many
children these days dont

know how to read analog,

or find it takes too long
to think about it, so they
search for a digital watch.
Getting them a cool watch
makes them want to be
able to tell time on it. Boys,
girls, and even teenagers
can be excited about this.
17. Games and Puzzles.
Games and puzzles are
great activities for when
kids have to be indoors.
Its a good practice to
have individual quiet times
during the day, and having
a puzzle to sit and work on
by themselves helps brain
development and
problem
solving
skills.
Games teach
a lot, too! My
nieces talk about
how they passed
geography, just
because we
played Risk when
they were little.
Monopoly and
Payday have
been popular
and help
cement
math
skills.
Memory
games
are great
for younger
children.
18. Calendar. Many
children like to know

what is going on, what day

it is, how many days until
____. These kids are the
ones who want to know
what the plan is for the day,
the order in which things
will happen, what time
friends are expected over,
etc. They struggle with
spur-of-the-moment and
can be frustrating if you are
a spontaneous parent. But
celebrate it! These children
have many strengths and
make our world run more
smoothly. :-) Embrace their
inner schedule and get
them their own calendar.
They can write down their
own classes, appointments,
play dates, etc. And if they
ask you, send them to their
calendar so they can get
used to being in control
of their own schedule. You
can even schedule spontaneous days, so they know
that something different
will happen that day. It will
help them enjoy the spontaneous
outings.

A step up from the fitness trackers are the smartwatches that have hit the market this year ahead of Apples
smartwatch that has received much fanfare that go
on sale sometime early next year. A smartwatch is a
computer on your wrist that does much more than tell
time. From Sony to Pebble, LG to the Razer Nabu, and
Samsung to Moto, smartwatches can fitness track, receive text messages, emails, and run apps. Most smart
watches run from $100 to $250.

If the person youre buying for is into party games,

Amazon.com lists its hottest game as Cards Against
Humanity, which the manufacturer bills as A party
game for horrible people. Its not Uno or Go Fish. Its
a card game for people with dark senses of humor. A
card with a question is drawn, and then players answer
with their cards. For example, the question card reads:
In the new Disney Channel Original Movie, Hannah
Montana struggles with __________ for the first time.
Then one of the players throws out a card reading
sharing needles to fill in the blank in an attempt to
best the cards the other players throw down. Cards

2: FITNESS TRACKER BANDS are projected to be

rated one of the better ones.

3: THE MOTO 360 SMARTWATCH is predicted

4: Amazon.com has ranked CARDS AGAINST

THE AUBURN JOURNAL

DIY

Rules to follow when giving homemade gifts

By Deleste Magda | Of the Auburn Journal

o, you skipped the Black

Friday mayhem in favor
of some more thoughtful,
homespun gifts this year, and
I dont blame you. But before
you set your sights on making
the Pinterest gods proud (and
launching an all-out war against
your stay-at-home, mom-of-theyear-earning sister-in-law), there
are a few things you want to keep
in mind.

START EARLY.

If you dont have time to start

early, try to rein in your ideas
to something that is actually
doable in the time you have to
spare. You might also want to
stick to something that youve
made before and you know you
can master with confidence. If
not, youll be disappointed in the
results and probably rather put
a Secret Santa label on it, as
opposed to bragging that it was
from you.

To avoid stress later, its always

best to start as early as you can
(think about a month ahead for
involved ideas or if you have a lot
of folks on your list). That way
you have time to run back to the
store if you run out of supplies,
or you can have a do-over if you
have any crafty mishaps. Its also
easier, not to mention more fun,
to craft while not under pressure,
and youll avoid silly mistakes
if youre lounging around as
opposed to frantically hot-gluing
something the night before.

If you have a lot of people on

your list this year, the best way
to get organized is to make a
physical list of your giftees and
write down what youd ideally
like to make each person. Next
to each gift, write out how much
time each item will take you and
be brutally honest with those
estimates. Does it sound like
something you really have time
for? Dont forget this is holiday
season and you also need time to

MAKE A LIST (AND CHECK

IT TWICE)

enjoy yourself and drink eggnog. Perhaps instead of making

all things from scratch, youre
simply personalizing a readymade item you pre-purchased, or
downsizing the amount of details
you want to add.
USE THINGS YOU ALREADY
HAVE.
Using household items as a
jumping off point for many
gifts can be a great time-saver
and even sometimes help you
stay within budget. Try quick
embellishment techniques like
stencils, appliqu, or embroidery to add a personal touch
to aprons, napkins, towels, and
even baby one-pieces. You can
also add easy-to-apply trims to
otherwise plain items like baby
bibs or pillowcases. There are
even special markers you can use
to paint on pre-made ceramics
and then cook them in your
own oven to set the ink to create
one-of-a-kind mugs, platters or
ornaments.

KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT

QUITS.
If you find yourself up late at
night, fingertips burned from
the hot-glue gun or screaming
at your knitting needles because
they just wont behave, its time
to rethink what youre doing.
You should also think about calling in a pro if its a craft youve
never tried before and its just
not going your way right away.
If you still want to give a handmade gift and just dont have
the bandwidth to get it done
yourself, consult the internet and
pinterest bible.
CONSIDER GIVING THE
GIFT OF DIY.
Some trends Ive seen are jewelry
kits, a cross-stitchable cell phone
cover or a DIY cheese kit. Some
people I know really like doing
crafts themselves and giving
them the supplies to create
something is perfect.

Classic wins every time when it comes to cookies

Now, get mixin and start fixin!
Whisk your dry ingredients
together in a bowl. Make sure
they are well mixed. Using a
mixer and separate bowl, beat
your butter, brown sugar and
egg using a medium setting
until blended. Now you can add
your molasses and vanilla. As
in the previous step, allow the
ingredients to blend together
before heading to the next
step. Once your mixture is wellmixed, stir in the dry ingredients
slowly. Be careful not to pour
too quickly at this step because
you could create clumps in the
dough.
Gently pat the dough into a ball
and cut it in two. It should stand

at room temperature for up to

eight hours, but no less than
two hours. After your dough has
set, preheat your oven to 375
degrees. You can use parchment
paper or grease to prepare your
cookie sheet for the oven, but
parchment paper makes it easy
to get your cookies off the sheet
when they are done.
Spread flour on a piece of
parchment paper, on one of the
dough portions and a rolling
pin. Roll the dough until it is a
quarter-inch thick. Be careful
not to use too much flour as it
can make the dough overly dry.
Cut out your desired shapes
and place them approximately
an inch-and-a-half apart on the

for the cookies to bake, so dont

between seven and 10 minutes.
Carefully move them to a
wire rack once they are firm
enough. Once they are cool
enough, decorate them as
desired. For the classic-looking
gingerbread man, use royal
icing which hardens.
If any of the cookies arent
devoured on the rack by passerbys, wrap them in cellophane

The rich, creamy beverage
has become synonymous
with how the holidays are
celebrated in the United
States. Whether spiked
or non-alcoholic, eggnog
is a tell-tale sign of the
season and a good way to
pay tribute to the old-world
origins of the drink.

Stir things up!

Use a saucepan over medium
heat to whisk the milk and sugar
together. The sugar should
dissolve within two minutes or
so. In a separate bowl, whisk the
egg yolks while steadily pouring

Heres how to whip up a batch for you and

4 cups milk,

1/2 cup bourbon or rum (optional)

1 cup sugar

1 cup chilled heavy cream

12 large egg yolks

Grated nutmeg (optional)

in your milk and sugar mixture.

Make sure the bowl is large
enough to accommodate the
increasing volume of ingredients.
Once the mixture is well-mixed,
pour it back into the saucepan
and stir it over a low to medium
heat. You will notice that the
liquid will begin to thicken. This
process will take approximately
20 minutes. When you are
satisfied with the consistency
of the eggnog, strain it into a
bowl and mix in your alcohol (if
desired). Let the eggnog cool,
cover it with plastic wrap and
chill it in the refrigerator. When
serving, add nutmeg as desired.

ALL ABOUT PRESENTATION:

When it comes to gifting your

a step beyond the traditional

wine or liquor bottles instead.
Soak the bottles in a mixture of

Glass bottles should be room

cracking or bursting. Scrape the

By Gus Thomson | Of the Auburn Journal

hile it took some real

effort to find Christmas
gifts and the holiday
spirit for that matter, the Auburn
Journal advised in a front page
story that despite a nationwide
scarcity of materials, Auburn stores
were prepared for the last-minute
shopper with a good stock of merchandise on the shelves.

After all, it was 1944. After all,

there was a war on.
And Journal pages provided a
glimpse into those days 70 years
ago when victory was on everyones
mind and not too far away. But so
was Christmas.

Joan Leslie offers a cigarette to Staff Sgt. Walter Johnson of San

Francisco on a visit to DeWitt General Hospital in Auburn as part of
the U.S.O. shows program just before Christmas 1944. Leslie appeared
onscreen in Sergeant York and High Sierra, among other films.
The hospital played host to several stars during World War II, although
there is no indication in Journal editions from that period that Bob
Hope ever made an appearance there.

Auburn Furniture Exchange had a
great Yule deal, with any Christmas

Freeman Hotel dining room was

And the Auburn Journals Christmas editorial wrote: With so many

are doing, it appears timely for the
true Christmas spirit to find a lasting place in our political, economic
and social life.

C HRISTMA S 1 9 5 4
SHOPPERS OUT IN FULL FORCE FOR
1954 AUBURN CHRISTMAS
By Gus Thomson | Of the Auburn Journal

he bold headline in the Dec. 23 edition of the Auburn

Journal-Placer County Republican was Shoppers continue local buying spree.
According to the story, a last-minute rush preceded Christmas
but, thankfully, Auburn stores were keeping their shops wellstocked with the very best in gift merchandise.
The merchandise included a roster of last-minute gifts for children at 1039 High Streets Montgomery Ward store that included
a metal service station with moving elevator for $2.98 and a
folding baby carriage for dolls up to 20 inches for $4.97.
The new giant-screen TVs were a big attraction in the window of
Fowler TV and Appliance. The big RCA Victor 21-inch Radnor
model with all-clear picture and mahogany finish was ready for
wrapping at $350.
The Ann Arbor Bakery was asking people to check out its selection of freshly baked holiday treats, including individual plum
puddings and Italian sweet bread. At nearby Auburn Grocery,
four pounds of yams were selling for 29 cents while cans of cranberry sauce were two for 33 cents.
All was not necessarily calm and bright. Auburn residents were

pondering the loss of a bridge link between El Dorado and Placer

Counties after a truck carrying diesel fuel caused the collapse of
the Rattlesnake Bridge. The bridge was targeted for inundation
with future construction of the Folsom Dam.
More than 2,100 children enjoyed the annual Free Kiddie
Christmas Party during two performances, featuring Abbott and
Costello Go to Mars. School principals cooperated by dismissing school during the hours of the Friday afternoon show and
providing bus transportation for youngsters from Loomis to
Foresthill.
The Auburn Garden Club bestowed its Best Decorated Tree over
12 feet award to Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Young. Best tree under
12 feet earned Selma Gordon a $5 prize.
The grand prize was awarded to the Terrace Street and Channing
Way Community Club for the best decorated street.
As an added inducement to shop in Auburn, the courtesy park
program was in effect through Christmas Eve. Sponsored by the
chamber of commerce, police department and city council, city
police placed a courtesy nickel in parking meters when cars were
found to be in violation of the parking ordinance. An envelope

was left in the car inviting the owner to return the nickel. Police
Chief Bill Scott said some violators enclosed additional money
and notes of appreciation.

AUBURNS 1964 CHRISTMAS MEMORIES INCLUDE

DECORATIONS, GENEROSITY & RAIN
Journal file photo

By Gus Thomson | Of the Auburn Journal

f you were looking for Christmas lights in the Yuletide season of 1964, the go-to
street in Auburn was Landis Drive.

In a contest sponsored by the Auburn Garden Club, residents who lit up Landis
Drive split up the $20 first prize for the best street with Christmas-themed outdoor
decorations. For their 1964 theme, the neighbors on Landis Drive chose the pilgrimage
to Bethlehem, with displays from property to property showing the progress of the story
of the nativity.
In Downtown Auburn, Santa was busy all the way to Christmas Eve welcoming boys
and girls at the Auburn Hotel (now Auburn Promenade) platform through 3 p.m., before departing to get his reindeer ready for a night of gift-giving.

Children ignored the rain to ride on the reindeer train at the Sierra Elm shopping plaza on
the corner of Fulweiler Avenue and the Grass Valley Highway in the wet winter weather
leading up to Christmas Day 1964 in Auburn.

A Christmas editorial in the Journal harkened back to 1937, when Auburn joined with
other foothill communities to save the day for Downieville children who lost their
homes in a disastrous flood. The stocks of merchants was also swept away and E. Clampus Vitus members stepped up to raise funds for toys, delivering them in a caravan. The
story has become an annual feature of the holiday week on San Franciscos KNBC radio
station.

The biggest Christmas ever was a highlight of the season for patients at DeWitt State
Hospital. Several thousands of dollars worth of presents were donated from residents
of communities surrounding the state mental hospital in North Auburn. Gifts included
jewelry, watches, cigarettes, wallets, sunglasses and craft kits.
Reeves Auburn Drug Co. was offering pre-wrapped for Christmas giving Broxodent
automatic action toothbrushes for $19.95. The Yuletide sale at Purity grocery store
included navel oranges at 10 pounds for 79 cents and an eight-pound canned ham
for $4.99. At the U-Save Bottle Shop in the Sierra Elm plaza, $4.99 would buy holiday
revelers a choice of a quart bottle of Old Glenmore, Old Hickory or Cream of Kentucky
bourbon.
An estimated 1,200 small fry enjoyed the 34th annual Christmas show sponsored by
the State Theater, Auburn Lions Club and Auburn Journal. The theater was packed to
capacity for a program that included a movie, cartoons and bags of candy.
And Auburn on Christmas Day was recovering from 12 days of record rainfall and snow
that resulted in the washout of the partly finished Hell Hole Dam and ensuing destruction of downstream bridges Dec. 23, including the Highway 49 link between Placer and
El Dorado counties.
