1. Four Printers work on a printing production floor where there are three offset presses. The AWeighted Sound Pressure Levels, as a function of the number of these presses that are in operation,
were determined to be as follows:
Number of Presses Operating
0
1
2
3

2.

Average Sound Pressure Level

81 dBA
93 dBA
96 dBA
98 dBA

Average Daily Time in Operation

4.5 hrs
2.1 hrs
1.0 hrs
0.4 hrs

What is the Daily Dose that these Printers are experiencing? Is their Printing Company employer in
violation of any OSHA Sound Pressure Level PEL?
Standard ear plugs can reduce the sound of a band saw by 24 dBA. Ear muffs can reduce the sound of
this saw by 31 dBA. A Band Saw Operator wearing ear plugs can safely operate her band saw for 4.6
hours per day. If she changes to using ear muffs, for how long a period will she be able to operate her
band saw?

Ionizing Radiation
3.

a) What radiation reading would be expected at a distance of 1 ft from an unshielded 138- milliecurie
cobalt-60 source?
b) What is minimum (How many) HVL should be applied in order to reduce the radiation to a safe level
(the maximum permissible dose (MPD) is 100 mR/week)
c) What is the thickness of Iron (if this material is the one that is used as a shield) (Half-value layer of
Iron for Co-60 and Cs-137 are 0.87 in and 0.68 in, respectively.
d) Distance Control: To achieve the safe level, what is the minimum distance away from the source
instead of using a shield (question c))

Non-ionizing Radiation
4.

Alternatif-1 (LASER)
a) The operator of a laser-based industrial metal trimmer wears goggles that reduce the incident
beam intensity at his eyes from 475 mW/cm2 (at which level, he would not even be able to see the
area he was trimming) to a more workable and safe level of 0.45 mW/cm2, as the transmitted
intensity. What is the effective Optical Density of the protective goggles he is wearing?
b) If this operator were to be retrofitted with a new improved laser source that had 6.62 times the
laser beam intensity of the original unit, and if it is hoped to reduce still further the transmitted
beam intensity experienced by the Operator to a new lower level of 0.19 mW/cm2 maximum, by
how much must the Optical Density of the goggles be increased to satisfy these new requirements?

Alternatif-2 (MICROWAVE)
4. a) The UHF Microwave Systems that are used for transmitting a very large fraction of all the public
telecommunications employ a circular antenna with a diameter of 40.5 inches. If these antennas
transmit their information using UHF Microwaves that have a wavelength of 46 cm, what will be
the distance from these antennas to the Far Field?
b) If the average power output of the highly focused, very directional UHF Antennas described above
is 0.05 kW, what will be the approximate Power Density produced by this antenna at a point 12
inches directly in front of it? If the established 6-minute TLV-STEL for this frequency (v ~ 600 MHz)
is 6.0 mW/cm2, for what maximum time period can a Service Technician work, if his assigned task
requires that he stand 12 inches away from and directly in front of this transmitting antenna? You
may assume that his exposure must not exceed the established 6-minute TLV-STEL.

4.

Alternatif-3 (RADAR)
a) Highway Patrol Officers frequently use a J-Band Radar system to measure the speed of vehicles on
the highway. These J-Band Speed Radar Guns operate at a microwave frequency of 10.525 GHz,
and they radiate from a 4.02-inch diameter antenna. How far is it to the Far Field for such a Radar
Gun?
b) The radar has an ouptut power of 45 mW. What is the minimum distance in front of this Guns
antenna that a Highway Patrolman must be in order to ensure that his exposure will never
exceed the 6-minute TLV-STEL, which has been established at 10.0 mW/cm2 for this frequency of
microwave radar?

Extreme Temperature
5.

Determine the Heat Stress Index (using the attached graphs) if the followings are known:
Globe Temperature: 110 F, Dry Bulb Temperature: 90 F, Wet Bulb Temperature: 75 F, Air Velocity: 50
ft/min, Estimated value of Energy Metabolism: 750 BTU

7.
