Day

Today we started working on the milling machine. The piece we were to work
on this machine was the C-form. Today we practiced on a spare peice of
metal and learned the various functions of the machine. The machine works
along 3 axes, which enables it to move up and down, left and right, and back
and forth.

Today we started working on the C form. We started by decreasing in width

to 60 mm. Following which we made one of the leg aligned at 90o from the
inner side. The C form form all people in my group was finished today. And
we filed the edges for any imperfections.

Today we did threading in the small block. We drilled four holes in the first
week and today we made threading in those holes with M6, following which
we cleaned the holes using an air pressure hose. We also drilled holes in the
black balls which will act as support in the machine we are going to make

Today we drilled in the C-form, followed by threading in the holes. We

cheacked for the straightness of the holes and their functionality. We also
filed the pieces of chips which didnt leave the metal while drilling. Lastly,
we threaded the black balls which we thread yesterday.

Today we were supposed to assemble and perfect the sides and any mistakes.
Most of the day we were filling for imperfections. Following which we took
photos of our creations and group photos as well.

No internship on Saturdays.

Weekly report: 6

This week our main objective was to learn about milling. Milling machines are basically
used to remove material from a workpiece advancing (or feeding) in a direction at an angle
with the axis of the tool. It covers a wide variety of different operations and machines, on
scales from small individual parts to large, heavy-duty gang milling operations. It is one of
the most commonly used processes in industry and machine shops today for machining parts
to precise sizes and shapes. We were given a detailed practical knoledge as to how we would
use the machine. The machine has various components. There are three levers which control
the 3 directional motion, namely, the X, Y, and Z direction.
The machine resembles to the one illustrated below,

We were supposed to complete aa metal piece on this machine called the C-form.

The metal was smoothed on the sides so that it come to the required length followed by
smoothing the inner part to align one of the inner sides at an angle of 90o.
The next step in our process was drilling the final holes. Drilling is a cutting process that
uses a drill bit to cut or enlarge a hole of circular cross-section in solid materials. The drill
bit is a rotarycutting tool, often multipoint. The bit is pressed against the workpiece and
rotated at rates from hundreds to thousands of revolutions per minute. This forces the cutting
edge against the workpiece, cutting off chips (swarf) from the hole as it is drilled.

Under normal usage, swarf is carried up and away from the tip of the drill bit by the fluting
of the drill bit. The cutting edges produce more chips which continue the movement of the
chips outwards from the hole. This is successful until the chips pack too tightly, either
because of deeper than normal holes or insufficient backing off (removing the drill slightly
or totally from the hole while drilling). Cutting fluid is sometimes used to ease this problem
and to prolong the tool's life by cooling and lubricating the tip and chip flow. The various
drills help us to drill different types of holes in the metal according to our reuirements.

After the last steps, we assmbled the machine and it was ready for use.
