Regolita:
capa de material suelto, heterogneo, con diversos grados de intemperismo, in situ o
transportado, cubre a la roca slida. Puede incluir:
- suelo
- saprolita
- sedimentos de origen diverso (aluvial, elico, etc)
- materiales piroclsticos
Con frecuencia estos dos trminos se confunden

Critical zone:
Concepts of the Critical Zone, regolith, weathering profile, soil profile, and solum (modified from Schaetzl and Anderson, 2005).
The unmodified/unweathered portion of the C horizon is labelled as D horizon.
All materials above fresh, unweathered bedrock (R horizon) are called regolith, which is equivalent to a broad definition of the soil.
The Critical Zone is the broadest concept, going from the top of the tree to the bottom of the aquifer.
