Reflections: Of a Secret Santa

Written by Rachel Essaff Maher
Like so many others, I went out shopping on Black Friday. Pushing
my shopping cart through the crowded isles at one oclock in the
morning, I thought about what to buy for my boys and found myself
glancing into the shopping carts of other holiday shoppers.
All
around me, people were buying electronic doodads and intricate play
sets of toys I have never heard of, but I prefer the basics: Legos and action figures.
One woman was standing in the Lego isle, a distraught expression on her face. She had
her cell phone out and was shopping online while standing there with a cartful of Lego
boxes. Walmart.com has these same Legos so much cheaper and with free shipping,
she warned me, Ive already put five sets back on the shelves!
I murmured some sort of response while glancing at the astronomical prices of the
Legos, none of which were on sale at all. My boys love Legos, but Ive never paid full
price for anything and I wasnt about to start then. In fact, I have found that the best way
to approach holiday shopping is to pretend that you only have half the amount of money
to spend and only one cart to fill. Fill it wisely and fill it inexpensively.
Since it was Black Friday, I had also vowed not to buy anything if it wasnt on sale.
Otherwise, there is no point in being out at one oclock in the morning. My rule: if
youre there to take advantage of the sales, only shop the sales. Most stores get you in
the door by luring you in with the sales flier, knowing full well that most people will try
to do all of their shopping while they are there because its just easier that way. But you
have to be smarter than the store. After all, chances are that everything on your list will
be on sale at some point between now and the Big Day.
Unlike so many of the other frenzied, frantic shoppers, I never really feel pressured
or panicked while holiday shopping. It can be a lot of fun to take my time and to plan
out every gift so that it is both thoughtful and exciting. I try to imagine what each of my
children will say when they open their gifts. As I placed two Transformers in my cart, I
could not help but smile at the idea of my oldest son opening them. His eyes will go
wide. His mouth will drop open and he will cheer loudly, How did Santa know I wanted
these!?
Meanwhile, my other two boys will be laughing and hugging their own action figures,
and my husband and I will share that secret smile as he says, Gee, that Santa he must
really love you guys.
Yes. Yes, he does.

December 6, 2014 10 am - 5:30 pm
ST. NICHOLAAS WILL BE ARRIVING IN SCHUYLERVILLE

For the fifth consecutive year, the Schuylerville Community Theater will host the Festival of Trees and Craft Fair in the Saratoga Town Hall on the corner of Routes 29 and 4.
On Saturday, December 6th, the sights and sounds of the holiday will shine from 10 4 pm. All of the decorated items will be available for sale. In addition, there will artisans offering unique items for sale,
and a variety of musical groups will perform throughout the day on Saturday. This is a great way to start the Holiday Season in the Historic Village of Schuylerville.
The annual parade down Schuylervilles main street featuring the arrival of St Nicholaas on his white horse will begin at 4:15 pm on Saturday. Families and children are invited to join in the parade and carry
lighted lanterns provided by the local Lions Club and sing Christmas Carols. The parade will end at the park at the south end of the village with the reading of The Story of St. Nicholaas, the official lighting
of the Village Christmas tree and songs. The Festival of Trees and Craft Fair will be open on Saturday, December 7th from 10 to 4. Admission to all events is free. Please join us!
A spectacular, free event filled with holiday music and all the trimmings for beautiful trees. Better yet, the fully decorated trees are available for purchase and the proceeds benefit the SCT scholarship
funds. This year we are expanding the decorated items to include glorious natural wreaths and holiday centerpieces as well!

"beginning" venue that enabled them to launch their own businesses while pairing with
more established artist who mentored them. Our website is used as an additional vehicle to
help artists gain visibility. If you are interested in joining us, go to our website: http://

BENNINGTON FIRE VICTIMS NEED YOUR HELP!My name is Brenda Schramm. Ron
and Sheila Harrington and family are our neighbors. My husband Dave and I were passing their house Monday when the fire began. There are no words to describe how incredibly devastated we felt for them as their house burned. The family of 5 and pets all got out
safely, but they have lost everything in the house - all the contents of the home, and an
entire lifetime of memories . Any donations would be greatly appreciated to help them
begin to rebuild their life. Please keep them in your prayers. Thank you !

Harvest Horror Stories

THERE ARE RISKS IN HARVESTING CROPS THAT ARE FROSTY or have snow on them. If
you doubt those concerns, I can put you in touch with some local guys who spent the better part of

more eye-opening was a warning posted by our main-line equipment manufacturer, stating that
