Lesson Sequence:
Engage: Every student will be given an index card. Each card has either an image, word, or
definition related to a vocabulary word that they learned about the previous day. Students are asked to
find their match in the classroom by showing their card to others to complete groups of three that
include a vocabulary word, definition, and picture related to each word. Students are encouraged to
circle the classroom and discuss the words with their classmates. TW model the process before
students begin, then walk the room to assist and informally assess student understanding as they begin.
Explore: Teacher and students will read Vocabulary Power, pg. 68-69, to witness the vocabulary words
used in context and discuss the meaning of the words as they are used in the text. (Use context clues)
Next, students will listen to the story Nate the Great via an audio recording. TW stop the recording
when they come across a vocabulary term and display a question on the Promethean board from a
PowerPoint to ask students questions related to the meaning of the word. Students will respond using
their individual active vote eggs by clicking either A, B, C, or D. After every student responds, the
TW display the bar graph of student responses and discuss the correct answer. The class will earn five
class points for five or more questions answered with 100% accuracy.
Explain: Review the words and meaning of the words with students and discuss how they relate to and
enhance the story.
Evaluate: Students will complete a glossary find using the glossary in their Trophies textbook which
includes the vocabulary word, the definition, and a picture of the word.
