Alcove
A small recessed place, opening directly into a larger room. Usually screened of by pillars,
balustrades or drapery. Sometimes used as space for bed, chair or a bookshelf.
Attrium
A large vertical space containing an opening to the sky. In ancient roman house, atrium is
the main hall which contains an opening to the sky where rainwater falls through a tank or a
cistern.
Attic
Sometimes called as a skyparlor, a loft or a garret. Attic is a space between the ceiling of the
upmost story and the roof framing usually used for storage but sometime converted into a
bedroom or into a home office.
Basement
A living space below ground level basically finished or mostly finished. Basement is a utility
space for boiler, Fuse box, water heater, air conditioning or sometimes converted into a car
park.
Carriage Porch - a roofed structure over a driveway at the door to a building, protecting
from the weather those entering or leaving a vehicle
Cellar
A room partially buried or underground usually intended for cool storage such as fruit cellar,
root cellar or wine cellar.
Cesspool
a pit or a cistern to hold sewage.
Cupboard
an enclosed storage space with shelves especially for glasswares and etc., usually placed in
kitchens or pantries.

Bathroom
A room for personal hygiene, generally contains a shower, bathtub, water closet and
lavatory.

powder room also called "1/2 bath" or "guest bath" usually refers to a room with a
toilet and a sink and commonly used by guests

A shower room or shower-room is a room that contains a shower cubicle (or shower
stall), but no bathtub. In the United States, this would be called a 3/4 bathroom.

An ensuite bathroom or ensuite shower room (also en suite, ensuite and other
variations) is a bathroom or shower room attached to and only accessible from a
bedroom.

A family bathroom, is a full bathroom in a house.

A Jack and Jill bathroom is a bathroom with two doors, accessible from two
bedrooms.

Bedroom
A room suitably for furnished for relaxation, resting and/or sleeping.

Nursery A room or place set apart for small children or baby.

Breezeway
a roofed walkway with open sides which connects the house and garage and if large
enough, can be used as a patio.
Box Room / Boxroom
Small rooms usually used as a small single bedroom, small childs bedroom or for storage.
Conservatory
A room having glass roofing and walls, typically attached to a house on only one side, used
as a greenhouse or a sunroom.
Dining Room
The principal room used for meals, in which the family in a private house come together at
mealtimes.

Den
A comfortable secluded room usually used as a study room, library, family room, home
cinema or even spare bedrooms.
Family room
designed to be a place where family and guests gather for group recreation like talking,
reading, watching TV, and other family activities.

Foyer / Vestibule
A small or large space intended to be an entrance way from the exterior to interior of a
house.
Garage
An enclosed part of a house used for storing and/or repairing vehicles.

Carport used for storing vehicles but not enclosed with four walls, typically
accompanied with one to two walls only.

Hallway / Corridor
A horizontal entrance way or walk way that connects interior elements or spaces.
Kitchen
A room intended for preparation and cooking of foods and often where meals also eaten.
Kitchenette
A small room or an alcove filled with the essential conveniences of a kitchen
Landing
A landing is the area of a floor near the top or bottom step of a stair.

Larder
A cool area for storing food prior to use. Larders were commonplace in houses before the
widespread use of the refrigerator.
Laundry Room
is a room where clothes are washed. Equipped with one or two automatic washing machine,
clothes dryer, ironing boards and etc.
Library
A place for maintaining a permanent collection of books. Sometimes used as a study room.
Living Room
is a room in a residential house for relaxing and socializing. Sometimes called as Front
Room if it is near the entrance.
Mudroom
A small room or entrance where muddy overshoes and wet garments can be removed
before entering other rooms.
Nook
An alcove opening off a room to provide additional or more intimate space, sometimes at a
fireplace or adjoining a kitchen for dining.
Office Room
Generally a room or other area where administrative work is done, but may also denote a
position within an organization with specific duties attached to it.

Study Room - a room in a house which is used for paperwork, computer work,
or reading.

Pantry
A serving room between kitchen and dining space. A room for storage of food supplies,
dishes, linens. Sometimes called as a larder.

Parlor
A room primarily for entertaining and conversing with guests.
Patio
An outdoor are or courtyard, open to the sky but enclosed, or partially enclosed by the walls
of the building used for recreational activities or dining. It is usually paved.
Porch
An exterior structure that shelters a building entrance. Usually open but in some cases it is
partially closed, screened or glass-enclosed. Also called as Veranda, Galerie or Piazza.

Double-decker Porch - a two-storey porch, each of which is vistually identical.

Engaged Porch/Integral Porch - a porch whose floor is set within the main structure
of a house, rather than being attached to the house.

Lattice Porch - a porch enclosed by a lattice usually of woodsticks; provides limited


privacy, yet permits breezes to flow through the porch.

Recreation Room / Rumpus Room


A room used for a variety of purposes, such as parties, games and other everyday or casual
use.
Roof
the top covering of a building, including all materials and constructions necessary to support
it on the walls of the building or on up wrights; provide protection against rain, snow,
sunlight, extremes of temperature, and wind.
Sauna
A small room or building designed as a place to experience dry or wet heat sessions, or an
establishment with one or more of these and auxiliary facilities.
Shrine / Altar
A room or space contains sacred relics, icons and intended for religious activities.

Stair / Staircase
A series of steps or flight of steps, connected by landings that permit passage between two
or more levels or floors.
Sunroom
is a structure usually constructed onto the side of a house which allows enjoyment of the
surrounding landscape while being sheltered from adverse weather conditions such
as rain and wind.
Swimming Pool
A man-made container filled with water intended for swimming or other waterbased recreation. Can be built either in-ground or above the ground.
Terrace
an embarkment with level top, often paved, planted and designed for leisure use.
Window
An opening generally in a wall that admits light and provides ventilation.
Workshop
A room which provides a space and tools or machineries for making or repairing objects.
