Course Description: Fundamentals of logic (boolean logic, first order logic), model theory, completeness
theorem, regular expressions, sets (Cantor, ZF), finite state machines, fundamentals of
graph theory, basic graph algorithms, statecharts, petri nets (3-0).

Prerequisite: CS 2305

Required Text Book: Discrete Mathematics and its Applications, Rosen McGraw-Hill, 5th edition

Course Work: Practice Problem Sets (numerous)

6 Quizes
3 Graded Assignments
final exam

Course Web Site: www.utdallas.edu/~kcooper/teaching

Course Grading: The final grade is calculated as follows:

50% Quizes (Best 5 of 6, 10% each)
15% Finite State Machine Assignment, Petri Net Assignment, Statechart Assignment
(5% each)
35% Final

Incomplete status: The UTD undergraduate catalog contains the requirements and process to apply for a
grade of incomplete. Some valid reasons for an incomplete include:
• Missing the final exam due to illness or death in the family
• Missing the final exam due to a job or school related business trip

Please note these cases MUST be verified in writing.

Quizzes If a student misses 2 or more quizzes due to illness, death in the family, need to travel
for business or school, then the weight of the final is adjusted:

Examples:
If a student misses two quizzes, then the weight of the final exam is
35% + 10% = 45%.

If a student misses three quizzes, then the weight of the final exam is
35% + 20% = 55%.
Makeup quizzes are not provided.

Add/Drop: The UTD undergraduate catalog contains the registration deadlines for adding
and dropping courses. Each student is responsible for following UTD’s
registration policy and schedule.

Quiz, Exam Dates: Quiz 1 Wed., Sept. 7

Quiz 2 Wed., Sept. 21
Quiz 3 Wed., Oct. 5
Quiz 4 Wed., Oct. 19

Attendance: Attendance is expected. In the event of missing a lecture, the student is responsible for
promptly obtaining any handouts, announcements, assignments, reading material, etc.
covered in the lecture.

Additional Notes: Co-operation with other students for the Practice Problem Sets is allowed and
encouraged.

Students may work in pairs for the Finite State Machine, Petri Net and Statechart
assignments.

Students registered in this course are eligible to access machines the Software
Engineering Labs EC South.

• It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have an account and are able to
access the labs.

• If you have a problem with your software engineering NT account, then please
send an e-mail to cs-tech@utdallas.edu

If you send me an e-mail, then please include “UTD” in the subject of the e-mail.

Required Reading Required reading is going to be assigned from the Rosen textbook and the class
notes.
