COURSE INFORMATION FOR

EE3311 – Electronic Circuits

Prerequisite: EE3301, EE3302 and EE3310

Instructor: Dr. Jin Liu, ECN 4.506, phone: (972) 883-4393, email: jinliu@utdallas.edu, web page:
www.utdallas.edu/~jinliu.

Lecture: Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 pm – 6:45 pm, ECN 2.120

Office Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays, 11 am - 12:00 noon

Textbook: Microelectronic Circuits, by A. Sedra and K. Smith, 5th edition, Oxford University Press. ISBN: 0-
19-514251-9
We will use Spice as the circuit simulation tool; the textbook has a copy of Orcad Spice CD. There are several
reference books listed in appendix F of the textbook, under “spice”. I recommend the following book: Spice –
A Guide to Circuit Simulation & Analysis Using PSpice, P. Tuinenga, 3rd edition, Prentice Hall. ISBN: 0-13-
158775-7

Objective: To introduce the principles of electronic circuits design. Circuits containing nonlinear elements
will be analyzed and designed. Content of this class includes op-amp circuits, diodes, field effect and bipolar
transistors, large signal and small signal models of FET and BJT transistors, single transistor amplifiers,
differential amplifiers, current mirrors, and frequency responses.

Course Grading Policy: The final grade is determined by the following scheme:
homework x 30% + maximum (Exam 1, Exam 2) x 30% + Final Exam x 40%.

Homework: Homework will be collected at the beginning of the class on the due date; no late homework. The
TA will only grade upon the completeness of the homework, i.e. if a student turned in all the problems
assigned, he/she will get a full mark. The solutions of the homework will be posted; please seek help from the
professor or the TA if you have any question on the solutions. Some of the homework requires the use Spice.

Exams: There will be two midterm exams and one final exam. The schedule of the exams is as follows: Exam
1 (Feb. 16), Exam 2 (Mar. 30) and Final Exam (April 27, 5pm); no make-up exams. All the exams are closed
book and closed notes, with one page of summary note on one side of an 11”x 8.5” paper allowed for Exam 1,
two for Exam 2 and three for Final Exam. Calculators are allowed. All grades become final one week after
they are returned in class.

Attendance and Email Announcement: You are responsible for all course materials, announcements, and
notes, etc. made during our regular class meeting time and from the class email group.

Academic Honesty: It is the responsibility of the instructor to encourage an environment where you can learn
and your accomplishments will be rewarded fairly. Any behavior that compromises the University’s rules of
academic honesty will be reported to the Dean of Students. The potential penalty of academic dishonesty are
receiving F grade in this class and being expelled from the university.

Library Reserve: The required textbook and the recommended book will be on reserve at the library, with
check out time of two hours
