Day 1
Course overview
Mr. Suleman KDF officially inaugurated the course ceremony with introduction background, strategy and
program of Karwan Development Foundation in Pakistan he further thanks to all participants for their
interest and time.
Session 1.1: Introduction
Mr. Kashif Inam has taken the lead; introduced him and requested participants to introduce themselves.
The leas facilitator shares the Course Overview with participants focusing on importance and impact of
course in daily and in professional life. He also shares the topics which will be discussed in coming three
days under the course.
In order to run course smoothly the daily management team have been formed by volunteers selected
within present participants the main task of volunteers members was to observer the time and interest

of participants during course, on the other hand it was announced to switched off mobile phone or
convert it to silent mode for to avoid any disturbance during lectures. The participants had putted their
phone on silent mode immediately after announcement.
Pre-Course Assessment Forms
The volunteers from daily management team has distributed pre-course evaluation form among
participants 10 minutes time were given to participant for to fill the pre-course form and handed over to
the lead facilitator.
Session 2.1: Basic concept & terms used in Disaster Management and DRM
Mr. Kashif has delivered the first session and started the session from group activity, participants was
divided into four groups and shared the pictures in hard copy and groups were given 20 minutes time
for discussion among each other to brainstorm what they assume from pictures the heading was also
share with them in separate A 4 size sheet, and it was asked to put the heading accordingly in front of
each picture, after the 20 minutes one volunteer was selected from each group to paste all these group
work sheets on wall and if the definition is incorrect will put the (X) mark and in case of definition is
matched with actual one shared by facilitator put () mark. After pasting all stuff on wall the facilitator

started sharing slide showing the actual definition which was really interesting for all because of having
debate on that. The session was made interactive when practical example was shared in relevance with
terminologies and concept by facilitator.
Session 2.2:
a)
During this session Mr. Kashif Inam shared with participants establishment history of Disaster
Management structure in country; how the structure and system came in place; after devastated
earthquake 2005 and strengthened after 2010 unprecedented flood via Presidential Ordinance further
he illustrate the important components of national disaster management framework and gave relative
examples.
b) An Introduction to CBDRR/M and its process
Facilitator explained the processes which need to adopt while taking into consideration of CBDRM
approach. He summarized his session with slides on how at the initial stage of the project, the role of
outsiders is important and where the outsiders are more involve. But at the end of the project, the
insiders have more dominant role and Outsiders role left for counseling and Mentoring. At the end of
this session, the participants give suggestion to have ice breakers and group activities especially in the
session after lunch.
Session 2.3: Introduction to Hazard vulnerability and Capacity Assessment
Mr. Kashif explained about the hazards, its classification, secondary hazards associated with the primary
one. He gives different examples for different hazards.
The facilitator explained about vulnerability and different types of vulnerabilities like Physical, Social and
Attitudinal vulnerabilities. He also gives different examples of the vulnerability by showing different
photos from different regions.
Last session of the 1st day was on capacity assessment. Facilitator discussed about the terms capacity
and capacity assessment. He explained that frequent disasters and similarly huge catastrophic events
are the triggering factors for building the capacities of the government and communities. He also
explained about different PRA tools used for the capacity assessment.
Session 2.4: HVC assessment practicing of PRA tools
After giving the background of hazard assessment, he explained about different PRA tools which can be
used to derive information with the support of community members. He discuss about Historical profile,
Seasonal calendar, Semi Structured interview, direct observation, ranking, hazard mapping etc. The
participants has been divided into three groups and three different tasks given to them group one was
responsible to discuss and write points regarding the existence and potential hazard in their village,
simultaneously group 2 was responsible for vulnerability assessment and group 3 was responsible for
capacity assessment to highlight the available resources of village. After the group work, the group

members presented their work and there was QA session after each session. The facilitator summarized
the discussion and give suggestions for further improvement.
Day 2
Module 3: Introduction to Disaster Response and Contingency Planning
The 2nd day activity started with the recap of day 1, where the volunteer from participants elaborate and
refresh memories of the day one sessions.
Session 3.1: Introduction Emergency Response Management
Discussion on different activities under ERM i.e. Evacuation management, Damage and Needs
Assessment, Camp Management, Search and Rescue and Medical First Aid
In this session facilitator focus on discussion base on government and humanitarian current experience
of responding to different disasters and emergencies in region while KP is facing different disaster such
as man-made and natural so the representatives have rich experience produced fruit full discussion
during session, the representatives were divided in groups and allowed to debate on activities usually
undertaking in emergency response and its management. The participants shared their experiences and
showed interest when facilitator summarized all the group work and discussion and making it more
relevant to their work in compliance with humanitarian code of conduct, sphere standard etc.
Session 3.2: Community Based Early Warning System
An exercise was made at the start of session, facilitator ask the groups to prepare role and
responsibilities with possible list of equipment needed by the early warning committees for possible
action to activate the system and disseminate the information receiving from responsible government
department and disseminating to community level, further he explain the role and responsibility of
government departments for monitoring the hazard and dissemination of information with other
department to issue the warning timely in effective manners down to community level utilizing different
channel e.g. media, radio, district authorities, NGOs etc at the end of session few best practices videos
made on early warning was shared with participants which was very much appreciated. The facilitator
also shares different tools and techniques to be used as early warning at local level utilizing the locally
available resources.

strategic planning determining how to pursue long-term goals with available resources, group second
responsible for Operational Planning determining how to accomplish specific tasks with available
resources. Group 3 focused on Short-Term Planning determining subunits contribution with allocated
resources. After presentation and question and answer session facilitator discussed more in detail and
provided the guide lines for further improvement.

Module 4: Participatory Risk Assessment and Response Planning

structure. Further participants shared their views the training was very much interactive due to the
methodology and delivery style (especially brainstorming, discussion and group work) of both facilitators
the participant showed commitment that they will further read the handbooks in detail for more
understanding and apply the standard and tools accordingly in field to mitigate the impact of disaster
facing communities who are prone or affected by the disaster.
Course Assessment Test:
The training outcomes was assess with the help of pre and post course test. The result shows that after
the course the participants are able to understand the concept of DRR, CBDRM and would be able to
prepare and update the village level contingency plan.

Recommendations:
The level of understanding and commitment showed the interest of participants in course as the
duration of said training was short this would be extolled if the detail training program has been
arranged for the participants.
-
Continuity must be maintained for arranging this kind of training programs for CBOs members
to strengthen their coping capacities.
Detailed training on first aid and search and rescue is required.
Refresher courses must be exercised.
Practical demonstration is essential to be held through people- centered approach in field.
