Plan of Action

On November 9, 2014, my dream became a reality. I wanted to take a step into ending
hunger in the Orlando area, and I did. This semester, I planned an event to bring the community
together to package meals for children in the Orlando area. The event was named, Pack to Attack
Hunger, which I believe, has more impact than a food drive because it allows people to
physically help end hunger and shows people the tangible difference we are able to make if we
come together as a community and set a goal for ourselves. Pack to Attack Hunger benefitted
Feeding children Everywhere, a non-profit organization and social charity that empowers and
mobilizes people to assemble healthy meals for hungry children.
Pack to Attack Hunger is one of the largest student-run philanthropies at the University of
Central Florida. The event was first created in 2012, to help end hunger in the Orlando
Community. Inspiring students, families, and friends in the Orlando area to make a difference is
the main goal of the event. Hosted by the Panhellenic Council, Pack to Attack Hunger, was
planned and executed by the Vice President of Community Involvement for Panhellenic.
As Vice President of Community Involvement, I had the opportunity to make all
arrangements for this event, which successfully happened on November 9th. Students, families,
and friends from the UCF community came together to change the lives of many in our
community. This year, the event raised over $38,000 and participants packaged over 151,200
meals. With over 600 in attendance, we were able to show the Orlando area the difference we
can make as a community.
The process of planning Pack to Attack Hunger was specific as I was determined to get
the most amount of people involved, raise the most amount of money, and package the most
amount of meals. This year, I implemented a public relations director for the event. This position

over saw all social media and created different marketing tools the event would need to use to
advertise the event and motivate people to either donate or package meals the day of the event.
The idea of Pack to Attack Hunger is to end hunger in the Orlando area, which is in fact
possible if we try. Once people chose to commit to participate in the event, they were asked to
donate a minimum of $30. On November 9th, students arrived the The Venue at UCF and were
assembled in lines to hand-package healthy meals to send to hungry children in the Orlando
community.
With this event, I focused heavily on the audience. According to Rhetoric in Civic Life,
audience is defined as Any person who hears, reads, or sees a symbolic action; the group
targeted by a message, even if it is not present; or the group capable of acting in response to the
message. However, I wanted to direct my attention to rhetoric in civic engagement since hunger
is a civic issue. According to Lloyd Bitzer, rhetorical audience is defined as, The audience that
consists only of those persons who are capable of being influenced by discourse and of being
mediators of change. I started to think about the meaning of rhetoric and how this will be able
to help my idea. I then read, Rhetoric is the use of words by human agents to form attitudes or
to induce action in other humans. This made me think, how will I persuade people to take action
and help fight hunger. I found that social media was a great approach to take considering that the
majority of my audience was college students. I wanted to be able to motivate and inspire
students at UCF to make a difference. Focusing on my audience allowed the event to become
more successful than it has ever been. Without reaching my target audience, the event would not
have raised that much money and participants would not have packaged that many meals.
Creating a donation website that was user friendly allowed to us to reach a large amount
of people and helped raised money for the event. This website allowed me to offer information

about the goal of the event and the different ways people can donate or participate to make a
difference. Each participant was able to create their own donation page on the website which
they were then able to share with friends and families as they ask for donations for this cause.
The following is the home page of the website, which includes different sections explaining to
goal of the event.

Furthermore, Pack to Attack Hunger was seen on Facebook and Twitter; the two most
effective social media platforms according to, Top 15 Most Popular Social Networking Sites.
Through Facebook we were able to share photos, explain the purpose of the event, and give
people daily updates with how much money was raised. Facebook allowed us to stay connected
with students, friends, and families. With over 1,000 likes, we were able to reach these people
with just one share. For this event, we also created a friendly Facebook competition sponsored
by StudyCube. Each sorority and fraternity participating in the event was asked to like a photo

that promoted Pack to Attack Hunger. The sorority or fraternity with the most likes on their
photo received a $500 donation in their name for the event.
Through twitter we were able to reach mostly students at UCF. Twitter allowed us to give
students updates at all times of the day. Sharing photos and updating our followers on the
amount of money we have raised so far definitely motivated students to raise more money for the
event. With the hash tag #packtoattack, we were able to monitor who was interested in
participating in Pack to Attack Hunger.
Although I was able to successfully execute this event. I now look back and realize I
would have done a few things differently. Using different social media platforms, other than
Facebook and Twitter would have allowed us to reach a wider audience for the event. There are
many different organizations on campus, however with this event I only focused on getting UCF
Greek life and UCF Athletics involved with the event. In the future I believe that different
organizations should be approached and invited to participate in this event. Furthermore,
sponsorships should be a main focus when planning the event. With all the accomplishments
relating to this event, I do look forward to seeing how Pack to Attack Hunger 2015 turns out.
