place: Hawaii-Kauai from Fremont, CA

transportation: plane, cruise
characters: Emilie (12 yrs old), friends Jenna &
Carol plot: go to Hawaii with Emilie, Jenna,
Carol's families
1.) introduce, say that they are going to Hawaii for
summer break b/c they got great grades
2.) plane flight : get ice cream sundae, vege. pizza,
describe dinner "relieve sunglasses, watch Harry
potter and look at brochure to plan vacation.
Decide on cruise.
3.) arrive at Disney Kauai resort-do activities.
One hot summer morning, Emilie's family got what they had been waiting for
the entire year. They had planned a five-day trip to Hawaii, to the island of Kauai.
Emilie, a seventh grader, had not been able to sleep due to her excitement. She
turned off her buzzing alarm clock and raced to wake up her parents, who were
coincidentally ready. Emilie rushed and brushed her teeth, took a hot shower, and
gulped down her oatmeal. Her best friends Jenna and Carol were arriving at their
house at 9:00 AM, so she brought her bags to the living room and slouched down
on the couch. Emilie had never been to Hawaii before, but just as she lie on the
brown faux leather sofa, she could imagine the roar of the waves, the hot sun, and
the deep turquoise water just behind the scenery of the tall palm trees. She could
visualize the fruit trees, flooding with dozens of mangoes and coconuts, with the
magenta-white hibiscuses dancing in the breeze. Oh how she longed to go there
now! But the waiting was over. Emilie sat up straight and greeted Jenna and Carol.
Apparently, Jenna had thought they would be staying there for the year, because
her back was drooping with the weight of her travel backpack.
"Silly!" Carol said. "You only needed water, a book, and some extra clothes!"
"Oh," Jenna said sheepishly, her cheeks going red. "I guess I didn't need to bring
two coconut cakes!"

Jenna had surprised them all by bringing their special breakfast before the trip.
Everyone grabbed a slice, and munched it down, savoring the ripe red raspberry
and the creamy, coconut-y taste of the soft cake.
"All right, now. Everyone have their things? Good. I've got a taxi waiting for use
outside, so we should be there by 11:00." said Emilie's dad.
And so they left for the airport in the huge yellow taxi cab.
After they had checked in their luggage, boarding began for the Boeing 747
plane, and Emilie and her friends eagerly raced onto the plane and to their seats.
Emilie grabbed the window seat, and Carol and Jenna sat next to her. Trembling
with excitement, Emilie gazed out the window as the plane lifted off. About two
hours later, the flight attendant came to their seats with ice cream sundaes. Carol
was especially stunned, because these cups of ice cream were almost as big as
Jenna's cake! She and her friends greedily gobbled it down, and soon they fell
asleep. They woke up about five minutes later, worried they might miss something.
Then, Emilie had a great idea. She thought they could pass the time by watching a
movie. Jenna suggested that they watch Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets.
They watched for about one-and a half hours and fell asleep again.
"Emilie, Jenna, Carol, wakeup!" came Jenna's mom's voice. Wearily, the three
friends woke up and realized that they had reached the Lihue airport in Kauai
already! They eagerly scrambled up get their belongings, and followed their
parents to the exit. The families took a taxi to the Disney resort and unpacked.
Then, it was time to plan. First, they had to decide which activities to do. Everyone
had their own ideas, but finally, Emilie suggested that they go to the beach carnival
at the resort and they agreed.
That same day at noon, Emilie, Jenna, and Carol went to the Disney Kauai
resort kids place. It was a massive building with a huge plot of land next to it with
lots of activities.

Donata is the daughter of a wealthy Venitian Mobile. Family, but due to her lack
freedom, she dresses up as a poor boy and explores the Jewish Ghetto and lets twin
sister Laura take her place.

Once, she meets Noe, a young man who gives her shoes when injures her foot. She
pays him back by working at a printers'
workshop, which she does for a month, while getting closer to him. At home she and
Laura convince their dad to give them lessons with their brothers, and learns to
read, write, learns history architecture, and business. However, Laura soon quits.
Later, Father finds husbands for Donata and older sister Andriana (first and second
daughters traditionally got married). He betroths Donata because he thinks that she
has been hard at work at home, while it is actually Laura. Because of this idea,
Donata feels guilty and

work and Heat

-heat is the transfer of thermal energy from 1 object to another
because of a temperature difference.
-heat flows from hot to cold objects spontaneously
-heat affects work b/c friction converts some E into thermal E
Temperature
-measure of how hot or cold object is compared to certain reference
point
-i.e. celcius= boiling-freezing pts. of water; Kelvin.
absolute zero
-temperature is related +0 ave. KE of particles in object (due to
random motions thru. space).
-heated objects = more ave. KE of particles because particles move
faster
-heat flows from nights low temps.
-collisions: high energy particles lose E, low-E particles
gain E
Thermal Energy
-Depends on mass, temperature, and phase of object

-total KE+PE of all particles of object

-more particles-more thermal energy
-highertemp= more thermal energy
-combination of tempt mass determines thermal energy
D. Thermal contraction & expansion
1. contraction
-temp. decreases, particles move slowly closer together,
so pressure decreases => thermal contraction
2. expansions
-thermal expansion increase in volume of material due to
temperature rise and particles moving farther apart.
-gases expand more easily than liquids and solids be.
they have looser atomic bonds.
-used in glass thermometers and oven thermometers
(unwinding metal coil)

E.specific heat
-Amount of neat needed to raise temp. Of 1 gram of material by 1 OC
-Lower specific neat = more temperature risen when energy is absorbed
by given mass
-measured in J/g* C
- formula: Q = m*c* change T {heat = mass * specific heat * change
in temperature.}
F.Measuring Heat Changes
-calorimeter measures win thermal energy
-calorimeter uses principle that heat flows from hot => cold object until both
temperatures are equal.
-mass of sample is measured, sample is heated and put in water. law of
conservation of energy : TE released = TE absorbed by surroundings
calorimeter is sealed, water stirred to evenly distribute TE. when sample &
water are same temperature. Change in temp. is measured, because it is
used in specific heat calculation.
