Hematology Image Database Operation Guide

Open database:
1. Open the VetArchiveViewer by going to programs and the specific program
identified as VetArchiveViewer. You should be presented with the following
Archive Selection window.

2. Identify the location of the image database by clicking the browse button on
the Archive Selection window indicated with (see arrow below):

3. Direct the Open Window to the Hematology Image Database CD and select
the File named HematologyImageDatabase-1.0.1.arc.

Open the VetArchiveViewer software through a shortcut you previously


created and follow steps 2 and 3 above.

Click the Open Archive button in the following window.

The following screen should appear with self-explanatory labels.

Information provided includes image


Archive number for reference as well
as Species, Sample type, Microscopic
objective used for image capture and
Stain type used for the specimen.
In the Contents section, some general
information related to what is being
demonstrated or present on the image
is provided. This will prove helpful
when the database is used in
Random mode during self-testing.
The directional fields provide buttons
for moving forward (next) or backward
(back) one image at a time as well as
indicating what image out of the total is
currently being viewed.

Searching for Specific Images


Click the Search tool button
window.

from any image archive to open the search

Search Window:
Type a whole word or portion of a word related to the topic you wish to search.
All fields observed are searchable and the search function is case insensitive.
Example: You are interested in looking at images with examples of
Acanthocytosis. To include a complete search with acanthocytes,
acanthocytes and acanthocytosis you type in the Comments field acantho
and click the Apply button.

In this example, the first of 121 records is displayed. Using the Next and Back
buttons, you can review the entire set of 121 images.

Random Self-Testing Operation Mode


To allow self-evaluation of observation and recognition skills in hematologic
microscopy, a Random Mode is included with this Hematology Image
Database.
To switch from the default Sequential Mode to Random Mode select the
View menu option in the menu bar.

The screen will change to a randomly selected file and associated image and the
information in the Comments and Diagnosis fields will be hidden.

After reviewing the image and attempting to identify significant morphologic or


quantitative abnormalities in the image, click the Show Information button and
the information in the Contents and Diagnosis fields will appear.

Upon clicking the Next button below the Comments field, the next randomly
identified record and associated image will appear and the Comments and
Diagnosis fields information will be hidden. This process can be repeated until
you switch back to the Sequential Mode.
